An editorial over at PC Gamer.

"I don’t have Attention Deficit Disorder, designers – you do. Only one of us in this relationship is forcing the other to look at what they’re doing. We’re locked in a destructive cycle of dickification: I resent when you take control away from me, so I’m as much of a dick as the controls permit. You see dicks like me being dicks in your playtests, and you think of new ways to be bigger dicks back: to force me to watch your scenes, play out your script, follow your high-school reading level plot.

Together, we have ruined mainstream videogames. And for my part, I’m sorry."

Laughing nicely written, he is definitely pissed about something.

COD is a great example of this 'movie' experience, nothing really happens unless you trigger something, you can shoot 10 million enemy soldiers and you might as well be shooting in the sky.

Happened to me in this one mission in black ops, the mission states that you need to push the enemy back so I figure there is a hidden timer and I just need to keep killing until it runs out, after a couple thousand dead and 12 repeats the mission finally ended after I accidentally punctured a barrel and pushed it, not sure why the enemy retreaded then and not before, I made a bigger mess with the grenade launcher.

i havent played bulletstorm yet mind you, but watched my brother play the first 15 mins.

out of those 15 mins it was 10 mins cutscenes , 4 mins walking to push a single button ( impossible to do anything wrong in both cases ) and then 1 min of shooting after which we decided to go watch jackass 3.

its great with the amount of space available we can have video and audio and all those things needed to present a story, but honestly... i just want to play a game, play, not watch an interactive technology demo.

Yeah, that's how it starts and it annoyed me as well, but later on there's actual gameplay without long interruptions by cutscenes and QTEs.

Mainstream games butchered themselves by going, mainstream.

Period.

Mainstream used to be, if not hardcore, then at least not for simpletons or people just wanting to watch a movie. Even console games used to be for grown-ups occasionally.

(Exception which was torn apart when it was first released: Dragon's Lair. Also, wtf? Back then it was lame and rubbish, and now it's called a QTE? Urgh!)

Alas, I think it is the mainstream itself that has gone downhill.

Link says it all. PC Gamer site lags like hell on my PC through Firefox, so haven't read it yet, but figured I'd post it. Smile

At least he had the balls to "say" it out loud. Razz

Bulletstorm is a very very good FPS wtih incredible graphics. And maybe yes, it's a mix between a movie and a very linear shooting game. That's fun and that's all, if HE likes shooting to stupid dead NPC, it's his choice, boring or not.
But anyway, of course, Crysis was not linear at all and that's why this pc gaming magazine liked it so much several years ago, uh...WTF...^^"

I have to agree with this guy about Bulletstorm. The first 15 minutes were infuriating to me. After several tedious cutscenes/QTEs I managed to out-QA their QA staff and get stuck behind the moron npcs in the first elevator, requiring a restart. By the time the actual gameplay started I was already at the threshold of just deleting the crap. I wish more developers had the integrity to stop catering to gamers with the mind of a 4 year old.

That's all fine and well, but they just have to acknowledge that by doing that you're taking a lot of the accomplishment and challenge away from the game when you cater to the retards. You simply can't satisfy both types of players, and it's pretty obvious which route most developers have gone these days.

Well, the number of casual gamers > number of hardcore gamers, so it's just a calculated business decision.

Yeah of course, whereas in the 80's and early 90's you could produce a mainstream game with just a few guys in a garage, the dev. costs have steadily crept up since then. And that has brought the investors and publishers etc. who don't care about the games themselves, just the sales numbers. Doesn't make the state of things in the industry any less sad tho.

We'll always have the indie devs at least. Smile
