Yeah, they're more of a support unit. Don't underestimate them though because in packs, and if your troops are attacking something else, they will hurt especially with melta.
So basically, ignore the Lord Commissar or the Inquisitor, just charge the guardsmen.

Also getting raped by IG in 3vs3 where the other team are all IG. Sentinel rape to control the map is horrible.

Only made it to wave 2. 
We had 3 level 1 IG heroes with sniper rifles, lol. Died so fast.

Did the first mission in the IG campaign. Really like how the narration is the same quality as the old campaigns. Can't say I like the shorter levelling "trees" though. Oh well.
