There's a difference between "not killing the gaming industry" and actually benefiting it. I'll check my bookmarks if I have any relevant studies saved..

"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."

first you have to define what is Piracy
some say recording radio stations is piracy
some recording TV programs is piracy
some Xero copies of books are piracy

The OP clearly states he's talking about the piracy that affects, negatively? positively? not at all?, the gaming industry.

At best it's not harming it (much). But actually helping it? I don't see how..
However of course there are exceptions. For example when Psychonauts came out it flopped because for whatever reason nobody cared about it. However through the years thanks to piracy and Steam, the game has found an audience. So there's a chance a sequel will be made because there's an established audience to market it to.

Quote: |
"Over the years it's gotten into the hands of a lot of people, through being two dollars on Steam for a while, and being pirated.
"So it's gotten out there. So if all these people were going to buy the sequel it would be a big hit," added Schafer. |
However, we must not jump to conclusions.. there's nothing to indicate that those that pirated the original will want to buy the sequel. So the second game could totally flop as well.

Another one: http://amitay.us/blog/files/piracy_doubled_my_app_sales.php
This guy claims after his iphone app got cracked and distributed among users (pirates) he got 2.3x more sales or to put it in other words: "For every 15 or so Pirates, I received an extra Sale".
So he benefited because he didn't have the resources to market it himself to thousands or millions of people, and through piracy and the "word of mouth" a lot more people became aware of his app.
However while that might very well be true for small indie apps, you probably can't say this is true for big AAA blockbuster games that have multimillion ad campaigns on websites, TV stations, magazines etc. So it probably doesn't help the Activisions and Ubisofts of this world..

Only gaming industry? If you'd want to have some prove that it can be good for small indie movie makers then look out for what the maker of "the man from earth" had to say about piracy. Something in the lines of, "next time I'll release my own movie myself on the internet"

There was a recent study on anime that showed that piracy positively benefited sales in Japan.

No.. If their games are massively pirated then they'll have to make games that are more likely to sell; games for the masses.

Well, I can name a few benefit. First is that games are more noticeable if more people will try and play them.
Now, this on its own isn't economic benefit (since all those extra players were freeloaders). But still, someone who played one game, even pirated, could be interested, in a future, to buy a sequel.
Another benefit is higher base of moders. There are no many skilled moders, and if piracy users have access to modding tools, you can expect higher number of mods then if they are limited to paid users only. And this benefits everyone.

Some games wouldn't have hit cult status without piracy. Many wouldn't have been hits without piracy. The only one I can think of is something like Black on the original Xbox. It wasn't really marketed by the pirate community put it on the map.

It brings entertainment and materialistic things people want into there lives that they could otherwise not afford or would live at a substantially lower quality if they did pay out for the things they want.

Amnesia and Recettear were pirated >24h before their release. Both are great games and both ended up selling like hotcakes.
Some indie game called Raycatcher was pirated on a regular basis (after its release) and developer ended up complaining to news sites like "piracy killed our studio". It was a shitty game.

No, they did not, at least Amnesia didn't. Read the developer's comments on sales.

I dont think piracy has any positive effects on gaming... it ammounts to stealing something that is not yours, taking money from the people who made it. Looking at it like that, its obvious we wont find any positives.
Now, on a personal level, the pirate himself is the only one to benefit. In this day and age where major games are coming out constantly, we would never have the money to buy and play them all, so piracy enables that for me, but it doesnt exclude me from spending on games i realy enjoy and from companies that makes them consistently, recent examples:
Preorders:
Dragon Age 2
Shogun Total War 2
Bought this last year:
Mass Effect 1, 2, +dlc
Dragon Age dlc
Napoleon Total War
Witcher Enhanced edition

I don't believe in the "I buy it if I like a pirated game" bullshit. No man will buy an SP game at full price when he's done with it. If it happens, the game must truly be mesmerizing.

The common sense would suggest to play just a small portion of the pirated game (if the official demo isn't available) and then buy the legit one, but as you correctly said, it happens very rarely, at least for me. There's too much pirate blood flowin' through my veins and definitely not enough money in my pockets!
