I've been in this site for a while now, and I've been around free software for even longer, think several years. During all of this time, all that I've managed to get are good (not great, all pubs) channels on a certain chat network. I'm pretty sure that most of you have access to more than that. I'm not asking what, where, and how. I'm not a noob (though this may help many, many noobs on this site). What I'm asking is how did you get into it. Don't give names, addresses, etc. I don't want them, the mods won't allow them. Just answer these questions:
1. Can access to non-pub (think 1000+ files in more than 3 categories) FTPs be found on Google, to the best of your knowledge.
2. How (where, no details just the type of activity, ie through a friend online, friend in life, google, forum, etc) did/do you get access to the better of your FTPs.
3. How easy is it to get.
And please, people, don't tell me that everyone in the scene knows a top scener. There are just WAY too fucking many curries and low-lvl sceners + ppl with access to good ftps out there for every fucking one of them to be a trusted friend or a friend of a trusted friend of a high-level scener. Likely, some of it happens through RL. But not to this extent. Once again, no details please, no sane person would follow your instructions closer than the program type used, and I'd like to keep this thread open.
As for mods, you're likely pissed. Don't be. If anyone (me first of all) starts giving details (or asking for them), feel free to ban. I'm not asking where exactly to get or for the fucking roadmap. I'm asking whether I'm supposed to take the highway to the left or the dirt road to the right.

1.- Yes
2.- i have skills using DVD authors and i like messing up with vob's so i add custom SPANISH subs to DVD's (like Ray for example).
3.- It was easy. but my first site, the total amount of downloads is the total amount of uploads i have to do. so if i download 4gb, i have to upload 4gb (im happy is not that way anymore).

i dont know
what to tell you, serve...thats all i can say  Well, unless u can code, rip or something like that. bu lots of ppl who cant still have connects. Usually they have some really fast connection
I hope that doesnt get me in shit, but thats basically what it comes do...unless u have a buddy that has a topsite or something like that.

yes, but only one (100mbit but there are only tens of latest files, not thousands).

through a friend online (good friend).
3. How easy is it to get.
imho very hard. the admin still doesn't completely trust me (few months passed) and logs all my connections.

i started at the very bottom of the barrel and worked my way up slowly... let's put it this way, when i first got a computer, i would sit by it moving the mouse constantly because i thought if the screensaver came on it would intrupt my downloads... got into some peer to peer then mirc, started serving, upgraded my connection, became a pub for a private channel, served some more, got access to some ftps nothing too big... then started talking to rls groups which were into movies... rest is secret.

Here is the story of my scene life:
About 7year ago, I became OP on a big french warez irc channel, after being online like 20h/24 for 2years. Other ops FXPed me stuff but never got access to something. Lost my op due to inactivity after 1year
Then the phase with pub ftps and boards were not too hard to go and with a bit of share I managed to stay up to date
These days, it's the days of the n00bs, torrents can go to a "ok" speed, are public and new stuff don't take time to get seeded. I stick with that. Never had any friend in the scene, have a poor internet connection (unlimited, but 3mbs) because i'm a student with no money so I can't share much.
I'm following the scene since like 10years, and never entered any good site like you talk about. I'm curious to see one, but I don't really care since I still can get whatever I want and it's less dangerous this way (not that I'm worried about cops in Canada doing anything  )

By the fact that 2 mods have replied to this already, I deduct the I'm unlikely to be banned for starting this thread, a fact I appreciate (especially given the fact that I was the one with my flag sticking out of my ass about trigger-happy mods a while back).
As for your replies, it's pretty much as I deducted - to get access to private channels or FTPs, you're stuck between knowing someone with access (who you know has access, anyway) to high-end ftps or groups directly, and serving.
After my recent notice of "busted, motherfucker", compliments of the MPAA and my ISP, I've cut down on downloading quite a bit (probably under 20 dloads since then, and that must have been a full 3 months ago), switched to WoW/forums etc., use a proxy (Slow bitches) and pretty much contemplate every download. Serving just isn't an option for the new, semi-paranoid me. Not until I find a way to get off their shit-list or switch ISPs, anyway.
In any case, thanks for the help (google question was of some assistance, though I've yet to find what it refers to.) I hope this thread answered some important questions that many of the regged and non-regged newbies here had.

lets just say that is a open-mind experience and with just watching a couple of folders u can realize why copyright companies are pissed...
its an experience that not all the mortals are allowed to enjoy.

Have some friends in the gaming industry (used to work on and off there myself) that had a monster site of 1,5 TB, this was in fall 2001 if i remeber it correctly. i used my connections on that site to trade with som other sites and when they went offline i was already set with some other sites, sadly they are all gone to now.

When I was a student on campus we had phat pipes.
for £70/yr we had access to a T3 line. Damn, I'm getting wet just thinking about those days. The world was our lobster. hehe
Don't have the time or line to indulge like that anymore.
It was'nt hard tho. Just join an fxp site or surf irc and hook up.
