Im not looking to install my OS on it just a few games. So preferably a 60 or 64GB would be perfect

Any suggestions on good reliable brands for SSDs? So far I looked up the OCZ Vertex 2 and the failure rate scares me a bit

lol ocz if they make there SSD's like they do RAM avoid like the plague!

i think the corsair ones are suposed to be good and the intel ones, the next gen ones were suposed to come out around march though which might drive prices down a bit

Failure rate? :S

Any SF-1200 based SSD is a good choice, or perhaps an Intel G2 if you can find one at a reasonable price. Honestly though TC, games benefit much less from it than your OS would, quite pointless to install just games on it. The games still need to randomly access stuff on your slow OS partition, and all the other apps will still be running off that as well Smile

Hmm would 64gb be enough for OS and maybe a game or 2? How much space does OS take up anyways?

I dont think Il need a big ssd drive since theres no way Im storing any important/irreplaceable files on it

Well assuming you don't install the full Adobe Creative Suite, two versions of Visual Studio and what not like I do, 64GB should be fine; to be honest though, the step to 80/90/100GB isn't that big though, if you got any concerns there. I myself have been running with a 100GB system partition for several years, and like I said, I gotta install a lot of shit.

Right now I'm running my games off a slower mechanical drive, rest on a 60GB Vertex 2. 11.6 GB free out of 55.7 total (sigh @ dividing by 1000 instead of 1024 Sad), and that's with the shit mentioned above on it. That, + an unpacked SHIFT installation Smile

Games don't benefit that much from an SSD, unless it's something like Shift when unpacked. Thousands of small files that need to be loaded; most games use a few big files rather than a lot of small ones. If you don't wanna be careful with what you install on it, then get a 100-120GB drive and you'll be more than fine (120 GB Vertex 2 is €160-170 here at the moment; probably about $175 over there I guess?) Smile

Crucial have slashed prices on there c300 drives right now making them the most obvious choice.

However this is making room for a new generation of drives in the coming weeks on a smaller manufacturing process that should raise capacity/speed and also lower price/gb Smile
Might want to wait.
If not then grab a 64gb crucial realssdc300 that can be had for about £85 now.

To go a bit further than Slizza, because Crucial hasn't slashed prices here in the rest of Europe, here's good choices:
- Any SF-1200 based drive priced similar to the Vertex 2's (Corsair F60/120/240 are also SF-1200 based I believe)
- Crucial's RealSSD C300 series
- To a lesser extent, Intel's X25-M drives

From the top of my head, Crucial has the highest throughput here, Intel the highest random I/O performance - in the end, it doesn't matter, they are all very good drives. Just check prices at whatever store you usually go to, and make your choice based on whatever provides the best value at a specific price range Smile

The new drives Slizza is referring to are also worth waiting for - note that this is only Intel, because as far as I know the new SF drives aren't due until May I think it is Slizza?

There will be multiple brands available on the new smaller nand.
Crucial included.

How are the Corsair Performance 3 series?

http://www.corsair.com/solid-state-drives/performance-3-series.html

Im currently eyeballing the 64GB one on Newegg for $153. Also my budget for this SSD is under $175

They are fantastic just pinching the c300 if you have sata 6gb/s ports.
The price/performance is out the window though.
Go with the much cheaper c300.

$153 for 64GB sounds like way too much Smile

Quite surprised at your prices over there actually. The 60/64 GB ones are close to our prices (with the $1=€1 conversion), but the 120/128 GB models are actually much closer to proper $-€ conversion (meaning they're more expensive for you).

If Newegg is a good indicator then the Vertex 2 is about $20 cheaper than the C300 after rebate, so that's what you should be looking at ($120-$15 for Vertex, $125 for C300). You could also opt for the Vertex 2 80 GB if you're concerned about space, $145 after rebate. Price/GB on that is a bit higher than the other two though Smile

With the Crucial C400, OCZ Vertex3, and the new SandForce 2000 controllers coming.. WOW.. Q2 2011 is gonna rock!

I would always recommend a 100Gb boot drive as your SSD. 64Gb seems too small.

Windows 7 Ultimate = ~13Gb
Office 2010 (full) = ~15Gb
Adobe PS5 = ~4Gb (if the Suite then ~13Gb)
Misc Apps = Varies
Games = Most of the latest blockbuster games are well over 10Gb installed so..

64Gb is really minimum for your boot drive. 100Gb is more realistic.

The ones recommended above mate Smile

I've got an Onyx in my HTPC now as well (since about 3 weeks), and with light usage that works really well.

No, prices shouldn't change much, because unlike last year, both controllers and NAND are getting improvements and cost reductions Smile

Go with the much cheaper c300.

I have SATA 6gb so I decided to go with a SATA 6gb drive so it pretty much came down to the C300 and the Corsair. I saw that the 64gb C300 offered:

Sequential Access - Read
up to 355MB/s

Sequential Access - Write
up to 75MB/s

And the 64gb Corsair Performance 3:
Sequential Access - Read
up to 365MB/s

Sequential Access - Write
up to 110MB/s

Since this is my first SSD and will probably be my last, I said fuck it and went with the Corsair Performance 3. I got the 64GB one for $153 from Newegg and I noticed they raised the price today to $165 Laughing

Anyways it came in the mail today and DAMN the dimensions of this thing are small! Its smaller than my cell phone. Gonna install my OS on it tonight. I got excited and took some pics of the box lol

Oh and this is my super cool mouse pad that i got for $5 on Ebay which took like a month to arrive: Very Happy

This HDD to SSD shit better be worth it!! Very Happy

Make sure that AHCI is enabled in your BIOS and don't install Intel's driver. The MS one gives better performance Smile

Just did that. I have it connected to my SATA III 6gb port and installed the SATA drivers from EVGA. Everything is working quite nicely. I relocated my TEMP folder to my old HDD and also disabled auto defrag and relocated some of the user files like Desktop, My Documents to my old HDD.

Im loving the boot speed! This is gonna come in handy especially because I have to restart so much due to overclock session BSODS Very Happy

I'm waiting for SSD drives with high volume storage capacity at about 2-3TB and reasonable and affordable prices. It seems the wait is going to be long and tiresome. Sad
