Massive names advertisers, says 40 titles will sport ads
Unbelievable. I notice that the article specifically mentions SC: Chaos Theory in it. Funny, the game still costs $49.99 at most places, so what exactly is the benefit the consumer is supposed to get from putting up with ads in their games? I haven't played SC:CT yet, so I don't know how intrusive the ads are (the Sony/Ericsson crap in PT was bad enough), but if Ubi is getting ad revenue from the game in addition to normal sales, I fail to see the justification for putting in ads and keeping the same price point as every other game out there.
But hey, at least there's some good news: the ads will be web streamed, which means a simple hosts file entry should be able to nuke them entirely.

It depends on how it's done, definitely. I don't care if I see a can of soda and it says Mt. Dew on it rather than some made up brand, but I get the impression that this new advertising is going to be stuff like billboards and other things that will seem tacky and out of place. Intrusive advertising is one bit of reality I can definitely stand to see left out of my games.

As long as we don't get any popups in games I'm cool with ads in games. It's just what FBK said, it's making a game more realistic..

The one game where the ads are there, and it does benefit you is Anarchy Online. They recently put ads into their games (where fake ads were) for all the free-playing users. All users which are paying the monthly subscription because they have shadowlands or alien invasion have a choice to see the ads, or the normal fake in-game ads.

All very fine if they put like a pepsi texture in a soda can model or a drink machine or whatever looks real, but no way im walking in a top-secret evil organization hideout and theres a coca-cola ad plastered in the entrance wall !

Well nearly every game has had "real" advertisements in. they were just burker king or whatever. no need to cash in with this and it adds nothing to games. ok i can understand a TV with the ubisoft logo on but there's no need for streamers that advertise down the side of buildings.

I think if some company is paying the dev company or whomever to run an ad in their game so to speak, the end user should have a reduced cost if they cant opt out...sounds fair enough for me.

I really don't mind some ads that are realistic such as an real life product displayed in a realistic setting in the game in a non obtrusive matter. Having a Nokia camera on the screensaver of a computer which is located in what is basically a high-tech mercenary HQ is not realistic. I also really hate the nVidia ad displayed at the start of quite a few major games, this is not even played out in the game it's the very first thing you see! Not only this but we see an Athlon64 logo at loading screens, these should be seen as big No-No's.
But if the game includes any form of ads there should be some discount to the game, I'm not saying we should get it for free but we should get $5-$10 off.

You know what'$ $ad? They'll do it. And you know what, their title$ will $till $sell, regardle$$ of what people may $ay.
Now that $ome $uit and tie motherfucker ha$ caught onto the idea, they will milk it for every cent it$ worth.
Just like this post, its all about the MONEY. Despite me replacing the s's with dollar signs, most of you probably still read it. Just like you'll still be buying games when shit like that becomes mainstream. Don't expect games to drop in price either. Face it, we, the consumer, are simply a cow that gets milked our entire lives.
The game prices will stay (or increase in price), the developers will still have tight deadlines and shitty budgets. The only thing that changes is that the CEOs of Ubisoft, Activision, and Vivendi will be able to afford an extra yacht every year, courtesy of us gamers.
Gotta love fuckin capitalism =)
*edit* BTW, take a look at the client list at the bottom of the link. Univeral Music Group, Paramount, Verizon.....they're honest, outstanding, supportive company's huh? *cough* Monopolistic motherfuckers.

I'll tell you about the extent of advertising in SC:CT.
Sam Fisher chews Airwaves, the chewing gum. The first time you see him in a cutscene he's on a helicopter and he pops one in his mouth, then the guy across from him has a 'WTF' look on his face. It's actually pretty funny, and doesn't feel intrusive at all.
The only time I thought it was a little over the top was when they had a cutscene which started with an Airwaves packet in the foreground, taking up about 1/3 of the screen. But it doesn't last very long. I haven't really noticed anything in the actual game however.

Ok but i im really against the streaming ads, i dont want to spend a bloody single KB to have ads streamed to the game, and i dont care if they get plastered in screen or are cleverly placed in in-game objects, simply forget it, seems well have to deny those games internet acess !
What about online games, as if the ping wasnt enough already in some servers they want to make it worse by streaming me ads !

Almost every major game that I can think of that is "online" uses at max 10KB at any given time, so ads would not harm anything. Unless of course you were on dial-up. I know that everquest uses 3KB max at any given time, and most MMO games are under 5KB.

A simple hosts file entry for whatever address(es) Massive uses should stop the games from getting new ad content, assuming there isn't something written into the game itself so that it won't run if it can't phone home to that server (highly unlikely).
I'm mostly concerned with ad content like what AO has. What Funcom is doing is fine, since the game is free when you're playing the version with ads, but I definitely would not want to see something like that in a game I paid for. The Matrix Online, which isn't a cheap game to begin with and from what I heard you have to pay for a month in order to use the free month (making it a minimum of $65+tax just to find out what a piece of shit the game is) has billboard ads in it for Warner Bros' movies at least, possibly other things. That is bullshit, imo.
