Super 8 (2011)

Quote:
Starring: TBA
Director: J.J. Abrams
Producer: Steven Spielberg
U.S. Release Date: 2011

Quote:

THEY SAY

1979, the U.S. Air Force closed a section of Area 51. All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio.

From executive producer Steven Spielberg and director J.J. Abrams. Next summer, it arrives . . .

WE SAY

Super 8 is the super secret project collaboration between J.J. Abrams (who directs) and Steven Spielberg (who produces).

Contrary to earlier reports it is not Cloverfield 2, instead it seems to be a creature feature in the $45 to $50 million range. Most reports have it that it involves “ordinary people encountering something decidedly extraordinary.” That could be anything from a UFO sighting to a tax refund, who knows?

Below is the trailer which has been attached to Iron Man 2 in the States. The entire thing seems to be cribbed from Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but it’s OK for a director to plagiarize his producer because then it’s a homage, right?

Expect more near hysteric Internet hype in the near future of the Cloverfield variety . . .

How about you get off your imaginary high horse that enables you to magically change other peoples preferences? Now that I'm an adult I absolutely abhor kids/teenagers as leads in non-comedies. They're almost always portrayed in a manner that is completely removed from reality, and that is often enough to ruin the movie for me. That they're generally annoying as fuck is just an added bonus. Of course there are exceptions, let the right one in comes to mind, but in hollywood the exceptions are rare to say the least.

I'm sure you might like this movie, I'm not arguing that, but knowing my own preferences and judging from previous hollywood movies it's safe to say I'll probably hate it.

Yeah, the ruined ET and The Goonies. Clearly this film will be terrible because it is about kids... something which has been known since the project was announced.

Um... hate to break it to you but this film is intended as a family-friendly 80s Spielberg homage, and if you didn't think it was reminiscent of ET you need your eyes testing.

ET and the goonies were great.. when I was a child. As an adult, the only enjoyment I'd get from them would be nostalgia and a few laughs at the comedic scenes. If you'd read my post I did say "as an adult" and "non-comedies". Oh, and I do believe I did mention there were of course exceptions. Oh(no2), and I do believe I mentioned these were my preferences. But hey, if you know my tastes better than I do, who am I to argue!

How about Sixth Sense for a previous hollywood movie? And don't try to bring an exception proving a rule here. My point being that a good director could've turned E.T. into a realy great movie, but vast majority of said movies are only directed towards families with children.

Well , i'd say it's for the kids who grew up with ET and Close Encounters , albeit , like i said earlier taylored for today's expectactions and standard.
The kid was making his own zombie movie when the events start to unfold so the idea would be to take us back to that time , about the same age when we were blown away by ET and Close Encounters and make those movies somehow come to life with all their intrigue and excitement.

Umm.. you can't invalidate counter arguments just by saying so. Sixth Sense was good when it came out, but I was 19 back then. I'm 30 now and I doubt I would enjoy it as much, having worked with kids for many years and having a much better understanding of how they think and act. But ok, I'll give you another exception (that somehow proves I like kids-as-leads movies). Mysterious Skin. You see the same two characters as kids and teenagers, and it's absolutely brilliant. And very disturbing. Probably an indie film though. Hollywood woulnd't touch the subject matter with a ten foot pole attached to another ten foot pole. No, in hollywood movies children are tiny grown ups, only smarter, and nothing ever hurts them because, as you say, the movies are family oriented. Which is another way of saying "a hollywod film with a kid as the lead". Same shit. And it truly is shit.

Got strong 'modern E.T' vibe from this trailer. Alien, kids, military, small town, Spielberg producing, kids reaching to said alien. Meh, was expecting something entirely different.
