Yeah right.. if it's anything like oDesk for example, I'm not going to work for $8 an hour just to be able to beat all the indian/chinese/whatever people that offer for example logo design for like $9, and they apply for just about any fucking job that's added..
Same thing goes with pretty much for everything I'm personally good at (design).. So oversaturated with cheap shit. I can still score some jobs here and there (not from freelancing sites though), where they respect my work that's not template-based, run-of-the-mill bullshit. But they are few and faar between.
But I think web design is even worse - sooo many sites based on "premium templates", and yes, many of them might look very stylish and "professional", but they just seem so.. dull? I dunno..

QFT. same shit with GAF, elance is halfway decent though.
i'm never dealing with those sites again, most of the work i get nowadays is via friends in the right places. nothing high profile (after all i'm not wgem, working for lamborghini ), but the pay is decent enough and the assignments aren't some dull shit for the most part.
anyways, serious answer for the original question: just look for a job where you basically don't have to do jack shit. for example, i'm working the reception desk in a hotel (nightshift) - fucking nothing to do except maybe hand out a few keys and print out some stuff + make a can of coffee before i gtfo at the end of my shift. hourly rate isn't that great at 8€ (net), but since i'm basically getting paid for playing games on my notebook, i can't really complain
