It sucks that the traps/torture half of the game isn't in for the first 5 stupid grindy misisons.

And I'm at the end of all that about to get into the meat of the game and I'm encountering an uber crash. I hope the patch fixes it (and is released).

A patch isn't enough to fix this game.

Epsilon: Game is great btw, I love it, so far it's a definite goty. It's remarkable how much has changed since the beta, stardock have been working their asses off, and it shows.

THANK YOU beckman. You are my personal hero, as always.

I'm going to finish the game just to finish it. It is not worth it to pick it up from the start if anyone's wondering.

There is ONE mission with torture traps. That's right, one. In a game called dungeons. And there are only three, one turns you around upside down, one is somewhat like an electric chair but they say the person's being forced to watch television or something, and one is a gyroscope-like thing that swings you around (yes, 2 out of 3 just swing the guy around). They're fucking ridiculously bad. And then they go right to direct sacrifices in the missions after that.

And even without the bugs it's totally uninteresting in nearly every aspect. If they had cookie cutter copied DKII it would have been fine. But they took every aspect that was interesting and made it stupid.

I never played DKI. Maybe I will give it a try.

I'm only at the fourth or so actual mission but I agree they're a bit lackluster and many concepts feel a bit limiting or very shallow though they tried to emulate Dungeon Keeper while also altering many aspects of it such as "entertaining" heroes and the light RPG systems in place.

It's a decent effort (Though as the patch notes show it's also a bit buggy.) but it doesn't quite match the old Dungeon Keeper titles which it borrows heavily from.
(As a personal notice it feels "evil" in the way that Overlord or Fable handles it as a more humorous and lightweight gameplay element.)

Sorry to bother you, but the file quits out before it starts patching. Was there something specific I was supposed to do?

(EDIT)
and does anyone know if it's worth it to play dk1? someone a while back told me it was better than II, but I like nearly everything about II.

No there shouldn't have been anything wrong with the update, it works here and it's for the install version of the game (Fairlight uses which is the D2D German/English version (Janaury 26th) which is why this patch took some time as the retail patch was pushed out a few days ago, separate launcher or some such method of keeping them apart.) after install it'll launch and update the launcher to 1.0.4.0 (You might need to let it through the firewall to update this.) and then you would normally sign in and it would download and start the patch procedure.

This is done by a tweaked MSI (MSP) install that'll "correct" the files in the install directory, you can browse to them to see it patch them in case you misunderstood what it does.
(Progress bar stalls a bit and then goes up to full and then the installer exits when it's done so you don't really see much unless you check the version number or the files being changed.)

EDIT: Launcher will refer to the game as 1.1 after the patch procedure and the launcher as 1.2.0.0

ah I went in a bit and the dates modified of some files are when I launched the patcher.

I wasn't watching the first time so I didn't see it til it quit out.

launcher version is 1.1.4.0 but it still shows the game version is 1.0.0.1, I assume that's fine?

also see earlier edit about dk1 Razz

Hmm the launcher says those specific versions I mentioned above to me, I'll just upload the modified files as well then directly. Smile

Was many years since I played Dungeon Keeper so I can't say much about it but I know I really liked the game but I'm a bit vague as to the differences between DK1 and DK2.
(I would guess the levels and story might have been fewer though better crafted in DK1 with DK2 adding new features and functionality but that's just a guess.)

file patch'd it fine for me, launcher is 1.2.0.0, game is 1.1, but.....

when launching without internet or behind firewall i now get this message--

Dear DUNGEONS player!

The Kalypso Launcher could not connect to the Internet, and thus can't provide you with updates for this game.
Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet, and that any personal firewalls you may have installed allow DUNGEONS to connect to the update server.

Another problem then though from what you are saying it seems mostly as a harmless prompt with no real purpose unless it does block something.

Hmm that's problematic, the old launcher should likely be functional with most changes intact however, dungeons.dll though might also have to be replaced and that file is a bit more important for the core game engine related changes.

EDIT: Should be all updated files.

(With new launcher so back up the old one first.)

The backed up launcher goes to the same thing so the problem is in some other file. I made a full folder backup so I'll poke around. Thanks for the files.

It's KalypsoLauncher.dll
Apply patch, copy over old file, works like a charm.

Any chance you could upload the 1.11 and 1.12 patches as well, JBeckman?

Didn't know the game had updated further, I'll see what I can do.

EDIT: Got the 1.1.1.0 update v2 (Might contain 1.1.1.2 then but it only solves three issues.) and some extras.

(Patch can be run from anywhere of course, rest is for C:\Users\YourWindowsName\Appdata\Roaming\Kalypso Media\ )

In one of the levels you are tasked with watering some flowers but whenever I try to do so the cutscene doesnt play and the game gets stuck. Is there any workaround for that?

JBeckman ... how about giving another look at those files? Wink Would really appreciate it cause this one makes all the difference
February 04, 2011 - Changelog for version 1.1.2.0
• Fix: completely satisfied novice, mage and necromancer heroes can now use their townportal home without crashing the game.

Well it's certainly a game breaker (i mean not having it). You can't let heroes upgrade fully, and mages get upgraded the fastest IMHO. And the use TP as soon as they are upgraded. So you loose a big point of the game.

Concerning the rest of the conversation:
I like the game! I admit, I was hoping for a DK remake as well, but once you accept that this is not a strategy game at core, but more like a 3rd person shooter with the ability to "zoom out" really far so you can better plan the flow of your victims ... it becomes quite fun!

And monsters aren't here to kill the entering heroes like in DK, they are another need the heroes have, to satisfy their masochistic need for pain, as well as their greedy need for gold and selfish needs for weapons and knowledge, to be able to kill more things ...
So putting too many monster in one place isn't recommended. You put them in a path, for heroes to follow to get to the more interesting rooms, and eventually into your deadly clutches.

I'd give this game a 9/10 if it weren't for all the crashes and some other little things. So a 8/10 seems fitting!
