Steam statistics concern gaming PC's though. The total number of PC's are what? Billion?
And yes even low-endish gaming PC is more powerfull than PS3 right now.

Agreed - however (I hope) I believe they were talking specifically about machines belonging to people who might consider themselves "PC Gamers". This - would actually be an something interesting to investigate. . .or maybe not. Realistically, no one knows the distribution of PC-performance amongst the "PC Gaming" population. |

The data are collected from those that agree to submit them when Steam asks them once a year. But how many Steam users are there? We don't know for sure, but what we DO know is that there are more than 30 million ACTIVE users of Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/news/4502/
If we make the hypothesis using the above data, that 70% of gamers on Steam have a PC that offers console beating performance, then we have 21.000.000 from the 30.000.000 active Steam gamers that have such a computer.
In comparison as of September 2010 there are 41.600.000 million PS3s sold in total while we only have the number of active users on Steam. Steam users in total could be double that number, and we still have no idea how many don't even have Steam installed.
tl;dr no way the PS3 is more powerful than 90% of gaming PCs. |
Very nicely summarized  And keep in mind, that there will more than likely be more "Gamer" Pc's out there without Steam accounts. Maybe not a lot, but there are "Non DRM" Gamers who hate Steam, that still buy games from their competitors.

@Lukxxx: Yes, but I responded to the guy that said that "I believe they were talking specifically about machines belonging to people who might consider themselves "PC Gamers"" because I agree with him; in my mind a performance comparison would only make sense if we're talking about gaming PCs.
Of course you can still buy brand new computers that struggle to play 2D games like Super Meat Boy.

I'm starting to like this guy more and more. Saw him on the E3 rant video for the first time and he was delivering some interesting opinions.

I don't agree with the statement that you should be able to finish every game.
Games like Super Meat Boy are crafted for a very specific hard-core audience, an average person probably wouldn't have finished it, but I did, because I'm a fan of these hardcore platformers. I wouldn't want the developers to create an easy mode so that worse games might finish the game, as it would diminish from my personal experience.

because they build up a user base starting with top ten lists people wanted to hear and they agreed to. then they got a voice and used it to give people ideas of what their opinion should be. and they got popular because same people loved hearing their own opinions voiced on the internet by someone they thought was famous. 
and by people i mean children who love console gaming more than pc gaming and actually believe that pc is made out of 97% pirates.
