|
 |
Hello,
I have two hard disks in my computer. They are Western Digital and they were bought at the same time. One of the disks has failed already after about 6-7 years and Windows is now telling me that the second hard disk is on it's last leg. Can anyone suggest a good hard disk that'll perform for years. I am not really looking into SSD due to price. Thank you.

There are no "good" or "bad" HDDs. Every company has a crappy series, hell even batches of teh same series vary. Just buy the cheapest HDD from a known brand.

Samsung makes the best HD now. Better than WD. Go with the Sammy F4 at 2TB.

On a sidenote, 6-7 years is not "already" as I just illustrated. More recent Maxtor drives are lucky to reach 2 years, while older drives last a decade.
Perhaps I should also clarify that mister_s is right, although going for the cheapest model is not the wisest idea. Both my F1 and F3 had newer (more expensive) revisions by the time I bought them, and perhaps those models would've done better for me.

Would anyone suggest an WD Enterprise HD over the WD Black Edition HD?

No. The Caviar Black is just as good as the RE3/RE4, except that they have a few extra gimmicks built in for parity checks and stuff.

What's the average speed of a 2.5" USB HDD (5400rpm)? I'm not asking about theoretical speeds.
