Used it as a guinea pig to install kmeaws CFW and Gaia 2.02 which went perfectly. Only original PS3 disc I have to use as a 'boot disc' is NFS: Shift.
Out of curiosity I tried copying it to the internal HDD with Gaia and was surprised to find it copied it with no problems and it appears to run fine. Now, as NFS:Shift is only 3.8Gb, is it right to assume it's actually a DVD rather than a BD? Or is it somehow possible that those of us with dead BD lasers are still able to rip games directly from disc? |
I think all PS3 games are on blu ray disks. Look at the disk and it should have a blu ray logo on it.

I'd assume there are no ps3 games in existence that don't come on a bluray. Would just make no sense, no matter what the size is.
If the laser was dead I also think it wouldn't even recognize the disk. It must be some kind of software problem I guess, or at least not a broken laser as that would manifest more strongly.

Yes. I have stopped using it and started using gaia. I now have less crashes.
I'm eagerly waiting to see what Waninkoko's new v2 cfw will be like. He must be putting a lot of effort into it this time to win back his reputation.

I gave up on the 3.55 CFWs and went back to 3.41
When I tried 3.55 Kmeaw yesterday I couldn't get mass effect 2 to run, and atelier rorona couldn't install for some reason, and both those games work flawlessly on 3.41.
I also experienced random freezes in the XMB which was apparently caused by that lv2 patch thing and may or may not be fixed with a new version now but still... overall just not a very good experience on 3.55 for me

I got a weird problem. I have a 160 gb ps3 and my usuable space is 149 gb. 11 gb the ps3 takes for it self and I can understand that. Now my problem is this: I have 8 games installed which in total are 60 gb. That means I need to have 89 gb free, if I take the save games in account it should be around 80 gb. So why do I have 40 gb free space while it should be 80 gb? Is the save games that big or is it something else?

Have you checked the Game Data (not saves) files sizes? Press triangle then Information.

I tried rogero and gaia with a disc in the drive. mass effect 2 gave me a disc read error but I did read some forum posts where people said it works for them. atelier rorona started up fine but it has a mandatory install when it's launched and that gave me another error and told me to delete the game files and try again, but it didn't work on a second try either.
that was from internal hdd btw, and I did fix the permissions. maybe you can get both of them to work somehow but 3.41 seems like a better choice to me for now as there the games just work without having to do anything special (other than maybe dropping in a modified eboot)

So there is no perfect unoficcial firmware yet? And the same for PSP? We need to wait a little longer? I have PS3 with 3.41 official (untouched, not jailbroken). Would you experienced people recommend to install any CFW?

There's always going to be a risk of bannage. Just make the most of it I say.

Install kmeaw, do not even touch the 2nd link.
Most likely Sony has a way of finding out but maybe they don´t - who knows...
For my part I´m making the best of it and playing online as much and as long as I can.

like microsoft, they never ban the service or id itself. its always the console. so in this case, the banned playstation wouldnt be able to create any more psn accounts nor access them.

They say no, and then what, you take them to court? ;p
Would be less expensive to buy a new console than to take them to court. By a lot.

Actually taking them to court is free if you win - you usually can recover legal expenses from your opponent.

I wasnt debating that, I was just pointing out that its fully legal for them to ban you from online services, stomping your feet and saying "IMMM GONNA SUE!!", and judging by 90% of the posts on playstation forums that will happen, aint gonna make a blind bit of difference.
As to if Sony can detect it, well time will tell on that one, anyone saying anything at the moment is just guessing.
I guess when the new firmware hits we will have more of an idea of their plans.

Does anyone know if it's possible to resume a file transfer using Filezilla and Blackb0x? I am trying to transfer a file and it cut off about 266Mb short of finishing a huge file that took about 20 hours. Clearly Filezilla supports the option to resume a transfer, otherwise it wouldn't offer me the option, but when I try I get this message:
Command: APPE GT.VOL
Response: 500 command not recognized
Error: Critical file transfer error

What in gods name are you doing that makes transferring the file take 20 hours? Sending it over 56k to your neighbor's PS3? I'm guessing that GT.VOL is from gran turismo 5? Unless you are doing something strange that shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to transfer.
As far as resuming, I'm not actually sure. I always set my FTP clients to overwrite instead of resume because I've run into problems with corruption in the past, and seeing as how blackbox is unstable and generally a poor FTP daemon in the first place, I wouldn't be surprised if it just straight up doesn't support it.

This is my first attempt - didn't realise that it should be running way faster. I am using wireless n router and adapters, so not sure why it is so slow - will mess around later.
I'm now trying a different FTP client - WinSCP, but I can't even connect using that - strange, I'm using the exact same ip address and port as I was with Filezilla
EDIT: Got in finally, but same issue with WinSCP - Copying files to remote side failed.

well then use an ethernetcable or copy the files via external hdd. wlan isn´t giving you more than 2-3mb´s cause ps3 dont support wireless N only 54mb. with cable or external hdd you get 20-25mb/s, thats much better
if you choose the external hdd method, you must split the >4gb files with an tool like opensplit because fat32 wont support larger files, but dont worry your backupmanager (multiman, rogero, gaia preferred) will join the files when you copy them to your internal hdd.

Thanks Teramos - I had already decided after that file took as long that I would make a point of figuring out how to transfer using an external - any pointers on a good tutorial? I am of course looking myself.
