Games that this applies to:
- Silent Hill: Homecoming
- Grid
- Divinity 2
Price: 5$/5hours
If you choose to buy a game you rented you'll pay 5$ less (the amount you paid to rent it)
So what do you think? inb4 why rent it when you can get it for free.

Yikes..sounds neat but those prices are a bit steep...assuming they added more games, what about RPGs? Would cost you as much to rent it to beat it as it would be to flat out buy it.

If we're talking about a long game the service makes sense if you rent it to try it (not complete it), and then decide if you want to buy it.
At worst you lost 5$, at best you pay the rest of the money to get the full game and continue your progress from where you stopped.

uh. Actually, cool concept, just take off the 5$ price, and let me demo the game for 5 hours, if i like it ill buy it. |
That's up to the publisher to offer these kinds of demos, I doubt a DD service would do it.

Seems reasonable. Nothing interesting for us of course, but a good deal for regular customers.

You are not paying for a demo, you are renting the whole game.
It would be objectionable if publishers started offering this option, and stopped making proper demos, but this isn't the case here.
D2D is simply an online shop that offers you a choice. Given how short games are these days you could pay 5$ or 10$ and finish a title that you would never touch again instead of buying it full price for 50$-60$, saving money.

You certainly have your mind set to this being the greatest thing ever. I think its a rob. When you play lengthy RPG games you are either forced to rush it in order not to pay the price for the full game or take your sweet time and well, almost pay the full price.

I guess like he said it's just meant to try it out, however if I like it after i rent it i'm just going to pirate it unless it's from one of the few studios i buy games from..lower the prices and let me play them for less than a normal game would cost and i would like the idea alot more.

Pretty bad idea. Don't really see the point. In short games it's good for the customer and bad for the publisher, and in long games it's vice versa.

if it was 5-10$/day for dead space 2 right now for example, that would be a reasonable offer. |
You can't rent games that use Steam for example from a video rental store.
Also if you could rent Dead Space 2 for 2 days for 10$ then why would ANYONE pay full price?

No it's not the greatest thing ever, I'm just explaining that you are given an additional option, nobody forced you to use it or use it for RPGs. There are plenty of games that are short these days for example playing Black Ops SP for 10$ instead of paying 60$ doesn't sound that bad to me.

the thing is, the whole online rental thing isn't bad by any means, but there needs to be reasonable scaling in price. you can't just charge 1$/hour for any old title, and at the same time, it would ruin revenue for new games. same goes for 5 hour long SP FPS vs. RPGs, racing, sports etc

Yes but my sensation is, the rental service will be alway applied to "old" games with low attractivity and not to the new ones

Oh, then you are better waiting for the next Steam sale, you might even get them cheaper

Hopefully they start putting COD games up so I can finish them @ $5 a pop since they have ridiculously short campaigns.
It's going to be pretty restrictive though as I don't see how they can apply this to Steam games. |
In theory, Valve could implement something similar in the future.

This is why the whole thing might be a good idea, but it's actually poorly executed. Grid (the full game, not the 5 hours thingie) was 5 euros on Steam some time ago, while D2D is selling it at 40$ now. Big deal

I really can't understand why anyone should rent a game. There are demos for many games already and they werent as cheap as one would expect if you were to just rent it. €1/h would have been more acceptable (however, I want to own the actual game rather than just rent it)
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.
