Anyone follow this scene? They were expecting to release an untethered jailbreak for christmas but nothing happened - true failbreak.

Has Apple finally beat the breakers?

Well if you have a Mac OS X machine and have your SHSH files from the 4.2 beta, there is one. Laughing

But ain't no big deal, you rarely need to reboot anyway, and if you do, just pop in the cable start the program and 1 minute later all is good. Smile

Make sure to save your current 4.2.1 SHSH files for later version untethered JBs though.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Whirling cane

So tethered devices really are that simple? If you need to reboot, just hook up USB and run the PC proggy before turning on? That's it? What happens if I don't have access to a PC at that time? Do I lose the ability to turn on the device at all?

You need to do a series of button presses to put it in DFU mode and then you select an option to boot the device in the program. If you haven't installed wide system modifications, then booting should be fine. It will just boot in normal mode and the sideloaded software will not function.

The only system stuff I've installed, except Cydia, is Winterboard and the Carbon Blue theme.

No idea what the outcome will be upon booting without the custom boot loader, sorry. You could always try and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you put the device in recovery mode and install a fresh 4.2.1.

Egh... I'll just wait. Either an untethered 4.2.1 JB comes out, or I'll just stick with 4.0 indefinitely. Thanks mate =)

You can always save your SHSH files, try and if it doesn't work out, just downgrade. Why 4.0 and not 4.1? I think 4.1 improves performance for old devices.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a untethered 4.2.1 seeing as how they already said to back up your 4.2.1 SHSH files for future untethered JBs. And sadly,

Because, to be honest, it's just too much fucking hassle. I don't WANT to have to constantly put my iPod into DFU mode for booting, it's a pain in the arse and I never know if I'm going to have access to my PC at that time -- especially when I go to England. What if my pod crashes during a game? That necessitates a reboot and... oops... sorry... we couldn't be arsed untethering on YOUR pathetic ancient device, lulz, deal with it.jpg

I'd rather just stick with 4.0 (4.1 is another clusterfuck to JB on 2G devices) and, as you said, Apple are now discontinuing support for older models on the latest updates. Rolling Eyes

What the f you do with your device to make it crash? Scratch Head The only time I had to reboot was for some package in Cydia. Now I just respring and that's all. If something crashes, it's just the process, not the entire OS.

I guess you've never played the fuckfest Aralon Rolling Eyes Besides, it's common knowledge that the older devices should be rebooted between playing large games since the iDevice has shitty memory management. You've got an iPhone 4 mate, it's NOT the same thing.

I tried playing it, but it crashed on the main menu. I said fuck that and deleted. Very Happy Don't they release updates daily or something? How the fuck did it even pass the Apple review board?

You ask me, I ask you. The game is a fucking mess... seriously Sad It's on 2.12 now (only had two patches released, despite the naming convention) and it's STILL a mess. Now there's a statement on the iTunes store that it supports 3G devices and above "only" >_>

Gah, sorry.. typo. I meant 3GS;

PLEASE NOTE: This game will NOT support 1st and 2nd generation devices at this time. It supports iPhone 3GS and up!
iPhone 4 Retina Display and iPad resolution fully supported.

It used to work on iTouch 2/iPhone 3G, but the performance was absolutely hideous - and that was even if you could play for five minutes without it crashing Laughing

No, I found out I was going 6 months ago. Now i'm finally leaving for the UK in a couple of weeks.

So in 6 fucking months they haven't released the new baseband hack. Seriously.

Because I can get out of the ATT contract I may end up just deciding to sell the damn phone anyways, and then just pick up a new one under contract in the UK. (Which I would actually make money doing) At least providers like O2 will carrier unlock the iphones they sell once you pay out of the contract. That way I won't even have to worry about jailbreaking shit since I only need to jailbreak to unlock it.. and the phone will be unlocked.

My only fear though is that i'm not sure if the UK serial numbered phones will work with a US iTunes account. I'd rather not loose all the apps i've paid for.

Here we already have a law (or it will go in effect very soon) that forbids carriers to lock phones, and retroactively must unlock at no cost. Not that it was really bad before, there was a nominal fee of 100 ILS.

But the problem is, here people don't know what a carrier unlock is. They move from one carrier to the next, and buy a new phone, because fucking representatives will bring hell upon you until they finally agree to do a SIM contract only, as opposed to new phone contract. Rolling Eyes

They have a similar law here, but ATT/Apple list the iPhone's as 'Multimedia Devices' not 'Mobile Phones' so they are not obligated to unlock them even after the contract period. Bunch of legal bullshit.

Oh well. I'm getting out of the contract for free because of my military orders so fuck ATT if they don't want to help me. If ATT would be kind enough to unlock the phone SO I CAN FUCKING USE IT IN THE UK then I would have no problem using ATT when I come back to the US. So fuck em', and i'm glad I basically stole $400 from them by getting out of the contract early.

According to eBay I can sell my iPhone 4 for like $500-$600. So I'll probably just do that, then pickup a new one in the UK and basically make profit. Even if for some reason my US iTunes account doesn't work on the UK phone i'll be making enough profit that it shouldn't matter.

Verizon won't be any better. If you think they will be you are wrong. All the wireless providers are thieves, and verizon has just as much reason to carrier lock their phone so that way Sprint customers can't use it. IMO, buying the verizon iPhone is a waste of money because CDMA carriers are almost non-exsistant outside of the US.

And the point is that my iPhone 4 is ATT, and I need it unlocked in three weeks so I can fucking use it in the UK.

As for why i'd be fine with staying with ATT once I come back to the US -

I've never had reception issues with ATT, and never once had an issue with their 3G speeds. They may not have 4G, but considering I rarely use 3G to begin with and 3G is allready pretty fast.. Don't care.

I'm grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan on ATT.

I hear that untethered 4.2.1 isn't far off now, greenpoisen is on the way?

I cannot wait for this - I didn't do a backup before upgrading so I am stuck and cannot go back. Really want to try XBMC on the iPHone and avoid the need to convert files any more.

Roll on untethered iphone 4 4.2.1 release!

While 4.2.1 might be neat, don't get your hopes up for XBMC. Unless they have updated it (I haven't checked after the initial install) it wasn't that good...
