CoD, Gears, Halo to adopt pre-release DLC model?

Quote:
The success of Dead Rising 2 downloadable prequel Dead Rising: Case Zero could see pre-release DLC adopted by major franchises like Call of Duty and Halo, according to game consulting firm Gun.

"Additional publishers are going to adopt the Case: Zero formula because it builds awareness for the game, creates excitement and a gigantic return," said Wes Keltner, CEO of Gun, which offers consulting services to game developers and publishers.

Capcom launched Case Zero exclusively for Xbox 360 about a month before Dead Rising 2 released. Available for 400 MS Points (£3.43), it was downloaded nearly 500,000 times in just two weeks.

"It's a win-win for all parties," added Keltner, according to IndustryGamers. "We're going to see these mega titles doing the same thing, like Gears of War, or Halo, or Call of Duty, something like that is coming out in 2011."

It's a similar forecast to that made by EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich last October, when he suggested that Case Zero's success could lead to pre-release DLC becoming a standard for AAA games.

Who knows, maybe it could work on the PC as well Cool Face

The thing that'll catch on is the model THQ suggested; where a game will cost you 15$ and the rest of the game will be dlc's at about 5-10$ a piece such seeming quite manageable to people.
But in reality they'll end up paying 90-100$ for a game they'd normally pay 40-50$ for.
As it's already been shown and established, theres a lot of derps, and they will not be able to see through this, which is why it'll be a success and become the norm.

"because it builds awareness for the game, creates excitement and a gigantic return,"

1) It doesn't sound like it's a "win" for the customer, but hey who cares about them hmmmm?
2) As if these titles need to "build awareness and create excitement". They are some of the most (in not THE most) well known games of this generation and for example the CoD titles already have marketing budgets larger than $200M ( http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/51534/Modern-Warfare-2-Cost-200-Million-Hidden-Game-Modes-Unlocked-On-PC http://www.pcgamin.com/news/games/cod-black-ops-has-biggest-marketing-budget-ever-pre-orders-exceed-mw2 )

The publishers of these huge games are going to do it because they know people are idiots and they'll buy these "demos", they certainly won't do it to "promote" the main game.

The only thing that's going to put these greedy fucking WHORES in their place, is another videogame market crash. The videogame industry is growing greedier and greedier every day, it can't continue like this - it's not self-sustainable. Eventually the house of cards is going to collapse and we'll have to start afresh. These fucking publishers are leeches, there's only so much blood they can suck before they gorge themselves - or their host - to death.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you say this with what right exactly? By buying into the CoDs you have contributed your part for this shit. And I am sure you will continue amassing MWs and BOs. What more, you have sent them the message that it is OK to crap on the PC gamer, he will take it, swallow and ask for more. Of course, this is not you individually. Everyone who bought these titles shares the blame.

I know for a fact you've purchased games from companies equally as shitty as Activision, matey, so swing that judgemental finger back at yourself too Razz Laughing I say it with the "right" of a gamer, who no matter what titles I buy, actually BUYING them entitles me to a say on how the industry is growing.

You mean Mass Effect from EA? You are right.
BFBC2 I only bought after DICE promised no maps will cost anything on the PC. Obviously they lied so no more buying from them.

That's about it. But hardly as bad as CoD. Embarassed

Considering I bought BO with part-cash from Christmas presents... only a WEEK ago, I hardly think I played my part in the $1bn revenue made from it in the month of November>December. So I don't believe I should miss out on something just out of spite. I WISH I had, because I had no way of knowing MP would be the clusterfuck that it is now (performance wise, I mean) - but that's besides the point. The point is; If I buy games, then I have a right to complain about the state of the market - just as I, and you and everyone else on this board, shares part of the blame.

And yes, buying anything from EA makes you as bad as me buying anything from Activision.

.... but at least I (we?) don't buy Ubishit Laughing

-addition-

I don't buy map-packs. I don't buy character skins. I don't buy weapon/armour addons. I don't buy prologues or epilogues (though, sadly, I DID buy the Dead Space Ignition thing... and regretted it immensely). I always, always, wait several weeks/months in order to buy the games I want at significantly lower prices because I simply do NOT support the growing trend of £45-60 games, nor do I want to contribute to Day0 "uber sales" that, as you say, only send the message that this shit is acceptable.

But what I won't do, is miss out on a potentially fun game just so I can spite myself and send a hollow, meaningless, "message" to the publishers. They don't give a fuck about me, not when they've already made MILLIONS from everyone else. If I choose not to buy, who loses? They sure don't. It's me. I end up losing out on a game. If I can pirate the games from these companies; I'll do so - but that's not always an option with online games. Something else I also don't do; jeer and taunt and deride people that do Razz If they want to buy something, then it's "Live and let live" since I don't judge people.

To be honest, I'd say it's the console market that is driving the trend. I don't think it matters that much what we lowly PC gamers think or buy (despite being a master race and all Smile) At this point not buying will only reinforce the publishers belief that PC platform is not worth the investment (some DLCs are not available for PC anyway).

As for games as a whole, It would appear that too much effort into the PC platform independently of the console development doesn't bring in enough returns. It could change if some publisher actually tried to make a significant investment and the sales would soar. Ubisoft did try something like that with GRAW series and it didn't work out for them, apparently.

No, this is a spin-off.

The next "main" CoD game is by IW which are a ghost of their former selves, as almost everybody that was a writer, designer or programmer has left, and those that stayed behind are mainly artists and animators, etc. which aren't that important because their type of work can be done externally via contract (meaning they are replaceable), while a game without a designer or coders cannot be made.

At this point it's not confirmed, merely rumored (by "industry sources") and yes it's Sledgehammer's game.

MP by Raven.

Sledgehammer's CoD spin-off delayed until they finish working on MW3.

Ahhhhh you also play that game Very Happy, i bought the vietnam ''dlc'' for 6 euros @ 25 december (special ea offer)....however i see alot users paid for that stupid specact kit, those weapons are already ingame but gets a camo skin on it......and they ask 5 euros for it (without shame) Rolling Eyes

I don't encourage piracy, but companies are stealing from us with dlc crap like that.
