Co-op is often refered to a single player campaign which can be played in mp mode. Saying that an mmo has coop is a bit redundant.

Cooperative gameplay (often abbreviated as co-op) is primarily a feature in video games that allows players to work together as teammates with the absence of player-controlled competitors. Cooperative gameplay is usually built around the single player mode of a game, modified to allow additional players. Often the story is modified and the difficulty level is increased depending on the number of players in the game. Players assist other teammates in many ways: passing weapons or items, healing, providing covering fire in a firefight, and even cooperative maneuvers such as boosting a teammate up and over obstacles.

Compared to competitive multiplayer, co-op gameplay has been gaining popularity in video games over the past years [1]. Though, technical limitations use to hinder the increased action or graphics required for simultaneous co-op play, notably on early-generation home consoles. As controller and networking technology has developed, allowing for more games to allow more than two players on PCs and consoles, cooperative games gained in popularity, especially in first-person shooters and sports games.

And instances in MMORPGs are exactly an example of cooperative gameplay. Buddies vs "monsters".

Some people here forgot the meaning of the word usually. If it's usually for single player campaigns, it doesn't mean that multiplayer co-op is not possible. True, WoW isn't ENTIRELY co-op, but grouped quests or raids or whatever you do with friends / clanmates is based around co-op. Co-op is nothing more than co-operation, co-operate to accomplish quests, missions, the game, etc. So yes, WoW contains co-op.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2011/01/07/runic-looking-to-bring-torchlight-2-to-consoles-confirms-15-xbla-price/

XBLA version of Torchlight 1 is being released next month, with adapted UI and movement for the controller. It also has "a few new armor types, random quests and a new dragon pet." (edit: and weapons http://twitter.com/runicgames/status/22900185784913920 )

PSN version is canceled because they chose MS as their publisher and of course MS demanded that it'll be exclusive to their console.

Torchlight 2 is planned for a console release too, although after it's first been released on the PC, essentially like the 1st game.

Delayed to July because the devs have been busy working on the XBLA port of Torchlight 1. However they note that they "got some optimisations and technical improvements" that went into the XBLA port (related to load times and animations for example) and they're going to be implemented on the PC version of Torchlight 2 as well.

XBLA port has been released, in 24h it sold more copies than any other day before.

Quote:
"We're very excited to bring Torchlight to the 360, and have been really gratified by the positive reaction. It's affirming to know that console players love this genre as much as we do. We think the experience translates pretty well to the couch," said President Travis Baldree.

After getting hands-on with Torchlight 2′s brawlin’, just-announced Berserker class at E3, I had a chat with Runic Games’ CEO, Max Schaefer about T2′s just-announced LAN support, Runic’s refreshing attitude about DRM and piracy (and why “millions,” of illegal downloads in China don’t bother him) and the the possibility of 50-player multiplayer.

Here’s a selection of direct quotes from Max Schaefer, formerly a VP at Blizzard North and one of the frontmen on Diablo.

On Asian piracy:
“Millions and millions of copies of Torchlight downloaded from the illicit market in certain Asian territories. And that’s fine with us. We knew it was gonna happen. For us, we kind of see it as, down the road, we’re building an audience. We’ve long since announced that we’re going to be doing an MMO, and y’know, we kind of view it as a marketing tool for us. We’re going to have millions of people who are familiar with our franchise, familiar with our style, and who are going to be ready customers when we do a global MMO.”

Torchlight 2 should be arriving in September or October.

On DRM:
“You’re fighting against an immovable force by complaining and being paranoid about [piracy] and all that. We figure if we’re just nice to our customers, charge a low price for our game to begin with, don’t over-burden them with crazy DRM, and customers will be nice to us too. And so far, they have been.”

“We got a lot of letters from people saying ‘Hey, I pirated your game, but it was really cool, so I bought it.’ Y’know, we’re cool with that, we’re not as concerned about that sort of thing as other companies, especially if it makes our honest players inconvenienced. We assume that everyone is an honest player, and we want to make their experience as cool as possible.”

On LAN support, which was just confirmed:
“I don’t know why everyone else doesn’t do it. I understand that a lot of other companies want to run you through their portal to expose you to the other products they have and make it easy for you to click a button and buy other stuff. But we’re a small company–we have Torchlight and Torchlight 2. There’s really no reason for us to do that sort of thing. And it’s something [fans] have requested, and we’re happy to be able to do it.”

On the prospect of community-created 50-player multiplayer:
“We’re releasing the tools that we use to make the game. We’re not dumbing them down at all or disabling anything–you’ll literally be able to change everything in the game, among that the maximum number of players that can get into a game. So yeah, if you make a level that’s appropriate for a ton of guys–we haven’t done 50–but it’s theoretically possible, it should work perfectly well.”

Oh man.... Runic are awesome. Yes, I also pirated Torchlight to see what it was like. It was so awesome I immediately went and bought the Steam version. Will I pirate Torchlight 2 first? See if I like it? Nope. I'll buy it on day 1.

Same as I sabin Smile

I don't think that the graphics sucks. It's just a childish/cartoonish style. And now that Diablo3 looks like WoW, there is not really much graphicswise for the mature audience.

I've never considered the graphics to "suck" in Torchlight (or FATE, which is exactly what Torchlight is built off) - I see them as fun. Sure they're a little cartoony, but then... so is Diablo 3 and the Warcraft-series. They're easy on the eye and performance is exemplary. Imagine what the game would be like if it was using CE2 Laughing

Definitely looking forward to Torchlight 2, as is my wife - who has recently become massively addicted to TL Very Happy

Great company. Yes I can pirate the game, but because of their approach to PC gaming and DRM, I WILL buy Torchlight 2. Also, I loved the first game and must say, it was the best $5 (on sale of course) game I've ever owned.
