This mobilized version of the 2008 console hit looked stunning for an iOS title, and surprisingly encompassed just about all of the gameplay aspects that you would find in the original console release.
Story-wise, the iOS version of Dead Space will act as a link between the original game and the upcoming Dead Space 2 on consoles. There has been a lot of talk in our forums about the possibility that Dead Space would be on rails, and with the recently released games Rage HD [$1.99] and Infinity Blade [$5.99] that focused on limited mobility (though both are still quite excellent), I can see where they're coming from. After actually playing the game though, I can put those worries at ease as Dead Space is a full-mobility third-person shooter just like its bigger console brother. The onscreen HUD is minimalist, and the controls use a touch anywhere movement scheme and some intuitive gestures for performing actions in the game.
The first level of the preview version I played took place on a moving tram-like platform, and I had to take out enemies that popped up as the platform made its way down a creepy tunnel. Here, mobility was limited to the tiny platform, but once it arrived at its destination, a control station, the game allowed for movement and exploration. There wasn't much time to explore, though, as immediately enemies descended upon me once again. After alleviating enemies of their various limbs, and dispatching the ones that kept on crawling after me, I was able to visit a computer console where I could upgrade my weapons. After that it was time to move onto the next portion of the station, and that's where the much-too-brief demo ended.
What I took away from Dead Space on iOS is that it's one of the most visually striking games I've seen thus far. The lighting and atmosphere of the levels is almost up to par with the console games, and from what I can tell it will come close to matching all the same gameplay functionality as well. Despite the minimal UI, there's a complex control system underlying the gameplay in Dead Space, and it's not something that was easily grasped in a 10 minute hands-on demo but it piqued my interest enough that I can't wait to dive into the final release. Hopefully that won't be too far off, as EA has told us that Dead Space should launch sometime in January, so drop by the discussion thread in our forums to pass the time until launch next month.
Looks really impressive for an iPhone game. Im not sure about the 'red splashes' when an enemy gets attacked. Im hoping that this is an early video and it wont occur like that in the final release.
Seriously. This thing is a fucking joke when it comes to performance, you should see how badly games like Aralon look/run. Hell, RealRacing 2 might be fun -- but it looks like GT1 compared to the loveliness of RR2 on 3rd Gen+ devices.
God fucking DAMN Apple for their scamming bullshit. Had I have known the 8GB model didn't have 3rd gen hardware, I'd never have bought it. Now I'm constantly looking for ways of selling this one just so I can put the cash towards a proper 32GB model.
I know that now mate, but I hadn't been too interested in reading all the differences between the models. It may not have been a secret, but it sure wasn't advertised fact either. It was kept pretty quiet by Apple in order to dupe idiots like me into buying the higher-capacity models.
anyway it ain't such big money (compared to iphones4/ipads) to cry over anyway. ipods cost nothing. just go and get a 4G 32gb.
True enough, though I won't be getting a 4th Gen. Those really ARE still expensive (unless you buy from America). Generally looking around £160 for a 32GB 3rd Gen, but £200++ for 32GB 4th ... and considering I paid £130 only five months ago, I'm not in a big hurry to dump down that sort of cash just yet.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway... on topic! I've been checking out the previews and videos of DS-Mobile and I gotta say; it looks absolutely incredible. Not a rails shooter either, which further enhances the "WOW!" factor. Hey VGA? Good luck getting that on a PSP mate!
Have you seen NOVA2, Real Racing 2 and Galaxy on Fire 2? They look amazing. And on the iPhone 4/Pod 4 run on a whopping 960x640 resolution. PSP
BTW, Apple is scamming iPod 4 users too. iPhone 4 comes with a very high quality IPS panel. It really is amazing. Much better than AMOLED for example. On the other hand, on the iPod 4, they still have the crap TN panel they had before.
Aye, I've got RR2 and GoF2. GoF2 looks/runs incredibly and RR2 runs perfectly but looks like a less-aliased version of GT1, rather than RR2 looking like NFS-Shift on 3rd/4th Gen devices
I know you got given your iThingy mate, but I'm really glad you're actually enjoying it! There are some cracking games out for iGizmos Lately I've been absolutely LOVING replaying Secret of Mana. One of the very best ports of a game I've ever seen, so much better than the SNES>PS1 ports of FF titles, that's for sure. Looks great, runs great, sounds great, bringing back tons of memories (though I've heard it has issues on 4th Gen devices, looking really blurry/washed out on Retina displays and performance issues on the iPhone 4 )
I wasn't given mine, but it was so cheap, it would have been stupid of me to pass. Even iPods are more expensive than that. And on top of that a business-grade cellular plan. But yeah, I was surprised for the better, which is always a good thing.

They still try to trick people into thinking the 8GB model is new.
They advertise it as "Ipod 8GB, newest model". Well, while that might technically be true, the 16 and 32GB versions have been updated, so the 8GB version is outdated. But still it is the "newest model".
EXACTLY. That's why I fell for it .. and I deserved to. Should have done my homework, I KNEW what Apple were like, so I don't really blame them - I blame my own dumbass'ery.
8GB isn't even 8GB in Apple's world. Despite it being flash memory, they still use the power 10 bullshit... so 8GB in actuality is 7.4GB, then Apple take 600MB for the OS leaving 6.8GB usable. Gee wow, yippee.
Despite all the glory of Open GL ES and shit, the most visually stunning iOS games still remain tech demos. Devs almost don't deny that Rage and Infinity Blade are TD's of their respective engines and encourage other devs to make something decent with those tools. Those titles may look incredible but as many reviews have stated they're mostly good for showing the capabilities of your gadget to friends, gameplay is weak and addictiveness = zero compared to Canabalt or Doodle Jump.
And I tend to agree. Sabin, don't worry about your 2G hardware, you ain't missing out on anything truly awesome. All the best stuff runs even on 2007 hardware so fuck those shaders and open gles
P.S. I've given my I4 to missus and currently using Android as phone + Ipad
