I have a folder of different movies / shows, all sorts of formats. Anyone know of a good program to grab which will do all of the converting (2 passes on video)? There is so much shitty "shareware" out there I don't know where to start.

Would be handy to have a batch function - aka do a whole folder.

Would also be handy if it added the movie after converting to the iTunes video library.

kthxbye.

I use MeGUI to encode 1080p content into 720p iPhone 4 compliant streams (Main Profile, 3.1).
Web-DL episodes are already from iTunes and are compliant, so only need to remux to MP4 (that is, convert just the container, not reencode the video and audio).

I find HandBrake more intuitive, a very nice all-in-one one-button solution. Comes with presets for Apple devices, and doesn't download thousands of third-party apps like MeGUI does.

Just use Nightly Builds

I download only what I need in MeGUI. Handbrake is exactly the same in that regard, only with much less tools. Wink
But if it supports all the latest x264 features, then it doesn't matter. Smile As long as it is not one of these retarded one click (ala Xilisoft), and it's not, then it's good.

Well I first grabbed MyGui - but I hate to say it - I was lost. I'm pretty much a n00b as you know, and didn't know where to start. It also started complaining that I didn't have certain things installed - so I gave up. I'm sure there is some kind of settings file I can use to get the perfect iPhone 4 conversion - maybe I should google it a bit.

Then moved onto Handbrake - the results of this were a bit disapointing too. Got the latest nightly however selecting a folder to queue, it actually only queues the first file ... ? wtf! Also, the final encoded video was a bit choppy, and the quality was no where near as good as the original (had selected the iPhone 4 preset as that's what i've got).

I have to go to bed now, so i've downloaded VLC and will let the battery drain in the morning when it plays the original xvids that I've been trying to convert... I've heard mixed comments on VLC - some say its great, but others suggest it struggles with anything HD, or anything over about 1gb. Maybe I need to stick to playing low qual SD xvid dvd rips via VLC until I can invest the time required to get MyGui working properly.

Oh how I wish I wasn't such a newb!

Thanks for the recommendations though guys!

VLC is shit for sure. I tried playing the same MP4 files in it, and it stuttered like a motherfooker. It doesn't make use of any hardware acceleration available on the phone, and it shows. Perhaps regular Xvids it can play, but not HD content.

WhiteBarbarian - when you add a folder as a source, it loads each file as a "title". do you then need to go to each "title" and click "add to queue"? Or can this be automatiated?

I have never tried doing batch encoding, but looks like you need to add each title to the queue. At least encode settings don't get reset, this way you can tweak them for first title and just add all remaining titles, assuming the file structure will be the same for all of them.

Handbrake is driven thru a single HandBrakeCLI.exe, so you can try to automate it via .bat file. Add one title to the queue then in "Encode Queue" window select 'Generate Batch Script' from 'Queue' pop-up menu, save .bat file. Now, you can tweak it, duplicate line for each file and change input and output filenames.

But I think it's much faster to add titles to queue via GUI, plus it's safer cause with CLI approach you need to make sure all input files shares the same structure ala needed audio, subtitles tracks have the same IDs. With GUI, you can tweak each title before adding it to the queue.

### ### ###

To up the quality, select needed profile and tweak 'Constant quality' slider. The lower the RF value, the better the quality will be. Usually these RFs produce very good quality.
For HD sources:
1080p - 20 <-> 22;
720p - 18 <-> 20

SD DVD - 15 or even lower.
