Well, if you had to choose from those two, then take McAfee.

But otherwise NOD32 is the best antivirus. Extremely light on system resources, yet the fastest and most accurate detection.

For more than six years, NOD32 remains the only antivirus system in the world that has never missed any 'In the Wild' virus in the prestigious tests performed by the international magazine - Virus Bulletin. Out of the 25 antivirus products tested on Windows XP platform, NOD32 was one of the 3 that have achieved a clean sweep detecting all the viruses in all the test sets in both on-demand and on-access tests without any false alarm. However, NOD32's scanning rate of the executable files was more than 3.8 times higher than the second best product and 21 times higher than the third of the products with 100% detection rate.

NOD32 is the best you can get IMO. No bloat, just does what it's meant to do.

"I am not afraid of getting a virus , because i have Datakeeper making daily images of my hd..and i don't want to have an antivirus running 24/7 because i might get one.
In ny case disable realtime scanning and it should make ur pc work muuuuch faster, and only scan files when u get them.
or try online scanning at http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan"

that has to be the worst advice ever.
you don't want to get an antivirus running 24/7 because you might find out that you have a virus in your images?! or did I read that wrong.

do you have to manually update NOD32? why is manually updating definitions supposedly better than automatic? Smile

EDIT: soz just seen website, and it has an 'Automatic Update module'. anyways, is it better to manually update anyways?

I tried Panda, NOD32, Norton and McAfee.
If you're considering to use one of the above antivirus programs, keep in mind what follows:

1) Panda is quite good, but its firewall is not compatible with Mozilla browser (which is the one I use), so most of the images on screen will not load, or the message "The document contains no data" will often show up. Furthermore, it requires username and password to download updates (quite irritating!).

2) NOD32 is VERY light, but it's not very compatible with Overnet, since the latter is going to crash quite often with this antivirus running, and this is pretty annoying. Same as above about updates.

3) Norton is maybe the most known and widespread, but it really "sucks" the majority of system resources, resulting in a considerable slowdown, and, often, it does not detect viruses properly.

4) McAfee is the one I'm using at the moment. It seems to work pretty good, especially the firewall. It's not so heavy on resources and the update process requires username and password, but unlike Panda and NOD32, it's totally free! The one fault is that you can't disable the splash screen on boot-up, but it's not that important.

So, in my opinion, use McAfee.
It's worth it. Believe me.

when you have to use ur computer for other things than scanning, id say mcafee.

Norton eats memory, damn that.

Although i have to say i prefer F-Secure, but maybe thats not that easy to find; theres no free version of it i think. :s
