ok so how do those of you with windows 7 live with how windows 7 handles folders?

i really need some help here, because im not enjoying myself at the moment...

my main problem... auto-refresh? what the fuck is this nonsense? why does this thing refresh my ENTIRE folder every time i view it. this would be fine if it was a small folder, but this thing refreshes my entire movie folder (some 700 files) and its a fucking pain.

also it doesnt like to remember how i wanted the folder to be sorted (by date for example)

so i read that folders are so last decade, man, its all about libraries. fine whatever... but thats no good either, because if i set up my movie drive as a library folder, THAT thing keeps getting refreshed every stinking time AS WELL. at LEAST it keeps the sorting order i selected, but overall it still seems pretty fucking useless.

i THOUGHT it could do something really cool... i saw a 'sort by genre' option, which would be epic cool, because i wanted to set up something like this in XP with genre folders and shortcuts... but this system in windows 7 probably works marvelously IF the files have been created WITH genre tags... which they havent...

would have been cool if microsoft just LET me configure the genres in each files property options, but there i go again... wishing microsoft created intuitive software...

in short... my first windows 7 experience coming from the warm, comfy, safe experience that was xp, is NOT great...

so how do you lot deal with windows 7 folders? have you all figured out some glorious way to coexist with them and make them do exactly what you want or what?

and no im not really keen on the reg edit ive seen flying around to stop the auto refresh, and quite frankly its stupid to have to rely on reg editing just to be able to organize my shit properly.

You can set genres to videos (for MKVs, use the Divx MKV for Windows 7 Technology Preview, or how they call it now).

XP also refreshes folder always, or otherwise you'd put something there and it won't show. Laughing

xp was never like this though... when you add a new file, it just shoves it down the bottom instantly with no problem, while in windows 7, it refreshes all the files information - like file date, running time etc... and it takes like 20+ seconds for it to do the entire folder... xp never did anything like this...

and libraries... its even worse, because it manually seems to re-add the files every time i go there, rather than just remembering the files that are there, so again, i have to wait for half a minute before its finished and i can look through all the files.

ill try the genre tool you mentioned, but i swear xp was never this intrusive with its folder refreshing Sad

or have i set up something wrong?

Libraries don't "re-add", they just do a search. Libraries are basically saved searches with more sorting options and ability to add multiple locations. Nothing more. They are great to sort stuff, especially when using network to stream stuff.

believe me, im HOPING that'll happen to me too, but so far im just wishing microsoft had instead offered me the option to just pay 200 bucks to add dx11 support to xp Very Happy

but come on... am i the only one that has large folders refresh every time you go to them, and take a good half a minute to re-add file information?

i mean if im IN the folder, and add a file, i get the same behavior xp had... where JUST the new information gets added to the folder and the ENTIRE folder does NOT refresh and re-add all the information. this only happens every time i go INTO a folder, so its not the same normal auto-refresh function that im used to from xp...

I had a pretty nasty gripe with the folder structure as well really when I first started with 7. It somehow grew on me, i'm not sure if I actually learned how to manipulate the shit or if I just gave up.. It appears my mind put a block on that memory.

ok new question then.

when i go into a folder, theres that bar that 'loads' the folder at the top, in the location bar... dont know what to call it, but i guess you know what i mean...

is it normal for that thing to happen every time?

and the libraries thing... isnt there any way to tell windows to atleast remember whats in there so it doesnt need to... well yeah, i cant think of any word OTHER than re-add, because it doesnt remember the contents of the library folder, it has to rebuild it every time you go there.

yeah i know it all sounds like whining... and yeah it is... ive just come from xp and i miss it Sad

Ahhh you have to let it run once and finish. It's creating thumbnails for the videos and creating a cache of the folder. Once it's done, it will only extract thumbnails if you delete the thumbnails cache or add new items (it will only recache the new items).

If you don't like what libraries have to offer, why are you using them? As I said, they are a stored search, nothing more really. "Bring all files from this that and that folder into here and call it 'Movies'."

RE: the bar, it was running EVERY time i was going into my media folder, and that was the problem.. even though i let it finish, soon as i go away from the folder, and then come back to it, it would run through the whole thing again...

re: libraries - well i was using them because i was hoping it would let me get around my folder issue... which i seem not to be having AT THE MOMENT after i replaced the date category with a date modified one, and removed the running time category...

i WOULD like to use libraries for organizing movies by genre though, i think that would be fantastic, but thats something i still need to look into.

gonna try resetting, and see if i have fixed my folder problem, or if it continues to do that slow refresh every time.

yep... thats weird. works fine... just like it SHOULD... but soon as i add the 'date' category back in to my movie folder, i get problems again... why would the date category cause a reload of the folder?

oh well.

now off to try adding genres.

core2 quad @ 2.67ghz
2 gig ram

my specs should run this just fine, and it does now that ive stopped using the date category on my movie folder... no idea why that category gave me so much grief.

Really weird behavior. The bar at the top only works for me if I search sth, and everything loads instantly. Plus I have no problems whatsoever with libraries. I use them every day...

so the content of your libraries is always instantly available in its entirety and never needs to relist the content - never reloads? man thats frustrating because mine always does.

so far my folder problem is fixed since i stopped using the date category....

I have a suggestion, try adding this folder to the indexer and let it index all the files.

Start -> type "Indexing Options" -> Modify -> select the folders you have media in.

Then you will see it indexing there. There is some MS gadget that allows you to put the indexer in preferred mode so that it doesn't stop whenever you are using the PC, but hurry and index everything.
