Well...

Though I do somewhat hate the damn protection (It can be problematic at times but later games are a bit refined, should patch the older games however but that won't happen.) but I like the games (So far at least.) and support good products (Though I end up buying a lot of weird stuff as well, Mark Leung Revenge of the Bitch for example.) but I'd had hoped earlier games would have been retired from said protection now after a few months to a year but it seems it won't happen despite server related costs and maintenance and the like.

Frequent stutters, 25 fps dips on both a E5200@3.6GHz and a Q8300@3.3GHz - HD4890 (ATI drivers? Cool Face).
All this in a game that really doesn't have anything to show for it.

Could be the SKIDROWREPACKSHIT, but I'll never get the retail version to clear that off.

I don't know whether it was SKIDROW's fault or ATI's, but I had a bad framerate + consistent stuttering as well on my e6600@3Ghz + 4870 Crying or Very sad

Funny, I had consistently great performance, stable frame rates and gorgeous graphics on my E8200 + 4890 system I had back then.

and yet to this day they didn't released a patch that would remove SF from King Kong to be able to play this in Vista or Win7 Laughing i had to burn a 360 version just to be able to replay it ... and no RLD crack doesn't work because it uses a hole in the SF 3.5 drivers and those does not work in those Oses

RELOADED and scene don't know how to start to crack the UBI protection. maybe russian SUXROW p2p repackers as usual will be able to release a fully raped and nuked crap with a UBI server loader and 100000 crackfix. you will have to check here for updates

King Kong also had the weirdest CE of all time though, was necessary if you wanted the most of the game, called "Gamer edition" or some such.

And yeah Star-Force 3 to 3.5 where far more problematic and prone to bugs and other issues, 4 to 4.5 made major improvements and 5.x even removed the reboot requirements and lessened the driver intrusiveness by a large amount plus gave a activation based alternative without timers or disc re-checks periodically though overall I don't like Star-Force very much, developers behind it are pretty arrogant and support is difficult.
(SecuROM is no real issue and Tages doesn't really provide support directly so they're a bit so-so.)

The Xbox 360 release featured improved graphics and audio over the sixth generation console releases. The PC download version (known as the "Gamer's Edition", no longer available) also included these improved features.

The "Special Edition" version of the game was available for a limited time. Along with the two standard game discs, included are: A bonus disc, containing concept art and a screensaver; and a making-of disc, containing a featurette with Peter Jackson. There was an error in the printing of the discs and the disc labelled "Making of" was actually the "Bonus" disc and vice-versa. The signature edition also comes with a Topps trading card of King Kong, a code for a downloadable ringtone, and a cover signed by Peter Jackson.

in other words the first PC version was a Xbox 1 port when the CE version was a 360 port with better graphics...and well when i play it now on my 360 i can say yeah the graphics are better on 360 !!! Shocked a ubisoft fuck you with your awful pc ports , hey at lest 360 version doesn't kill my dvd drive with its SF

And performance on the so called "SE" version was hilariously bad. Last time I tried it, I don't remember exactly, but I think it was on the 8800GTX and it ran like a complete shit for some added bloom and "higher" res texture (128x128 -> 256x256) Laughing

Just Cause 1 PC was the Xbox version as well. 360 had "next-gen" graphics.

Tomb Raider Legend PC, defaulted to the Xbox shaders and textures but had an option that enabled the "next-gen" graphics of the 360.. with astonishingly bad framerate at anything less than a 8800 card.

Yep, the TRL engine was really awful. On the other hand, they did a splendid job with the Underworld engine. It runs a lot smoother than TRL engine as well.

Not in "next-gen" (Laughing) mode. What you are running "fine" is the PS2/Xbox version, which also looks nice, but nowhere near the 360 graphics (or even better, TRU).

Didn't see this mentioned, but it looks like UBI has reworked their DRM a little. On older games at least.

I wonder if the same thing will apply to new releases. Should make cracking it easier at least Smile

They've started realizing they have failed irreversibly and extremely miserably, and are now trying to at least wipe off the shame a little by gradual steps. Cool Face
Or, they're just launching a common practice taking into effect from the new year to remove part of their protection off their titles after having passed 6-7 months past release time.
Hope it's not the latter one ...

But there's less restrictive DRM that has 100% success rate in combating 0 day piracy as well (SteamWorks).

They want to protect their games for as long as possible, not only before or 1 day after the release.

Well it's true Razz

Apart from the odd game like F.E.A.R. 2 that wasn't properly protected or Mafia 2 where a demo exe was used, Steam's DRM where the exe is missing and files are encrypted is unbeatable, as long as the game hasn't been released yet.

I think Valve uses both 0-day and day-1 to describe the same thing:

http://kotaku.com/5051514/steam-drm-vs-spore-drm

Quote:
Lombardi, and others I spoke to off the record, say that at least for digitally downloaded PC games, DRM and copy protection is here to stay. For Valve the biggest push is to lock down those "zero day" pirates. Day zero is the time between when a game goes gold and when it is available for purchase. Lombardi, and many others, are convinced that that's when a bulk of piracy occurs.

"That's the biggest problem," he said. "I'd be willing to guess that well over 50 percent of piracy occurs then."

"I think our solution solves the game zero piracy."

http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/publishingservices.php

Quote:
2. Retail Encryption

Protect your day-one release by shipping encrypted media to stores world-wide. No need to worry that your game will leak from a replicator or stock room - your game stays encrypted until the moment you decide to release it.

Ubisoft: PC 'still an important platform' for Assassin's Creed

Quote:
Ubisoft has told us that the PC is still a meaningful platform for the publisher's major franchises like Assassin's Creed.

Delays to the first and second PC games in the series were followed by a delay to last year's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but Ubisoft says fresh details on the third PC entry in the series are on the way.

"Definitely, PC is still an important platform for the franchise," Ubisoft UK marketing boss Murray Pannell told us. "The PC version is still on track, looking good and we're looking forward to showing some concrete details on that format soon."

A second batch of free DLC for the PS3 and 360 versions of Brotherhood is set to be released this month.
