|
 |
Quote: | Our goal as a team is to realize the world of J.R.R. Tolkien as closely as possible to his vision. We hold the lore to a very high standard and will try not compromise to it. We use the films for inspiration, but base our visual design mainly on the descriptions in the books and the works of Ted Nasmith and John Howe. We work very hard to bring a quality greater than that in vanilla Skyrim. We want our work to be looked at on the same level as that of a professional game.
An Open-world Middle-earth RPG like no other!
Currently, we have a complete heightmap of Middle-earth (over 9 times the size of Skyrim!). The first stage in developing MERP is landscaping, and creating settlements on our heightmap. The next stage is designing interiors, then creating NPCs, quests, and so forth.
Full Ringbearer storyline
Play the role of the Ringbearer, Frodo Baggins. Its up to you to decide the fate of the One Ring. Will you journey to destroy it: from the quiet Hobbit town of Hobbiton, to the fires of Mt. Doom, or keep it for your own selfish desires? Will you follow the famous path taken by the Fellowship, or do you destine to take your own path? The choice is yours to make. One fell step could mean the end to Middle Earth itself!
Heightmap
A map over 9 times the size of Skyrim. From Forochel to Harondor and from Forlindon to Rhovanion and every town and great city in-between.
Weapons and Armour
Wield new weapons and armors designed specifically for Middle Earth.
Quests
Adventure awaits across all corners of Middle Earth! Join the White Council, become a soldier amongst one of the great armies of the Free Peoples, or simply travel from town to town. Your own great journey lies ahead!
Battles
Join in many of the famous battles in the War of the Ring: from the Battle of the Hornburg all the way to the Battle of the Pellenor Field.
Creatures
Meet and battle all the known, and unknown, creatures of Middle Earth: new farm animals, Ponies, Boars, Wargs, Trolls and even the mighty Balrog!
FAQ
- All the races, creatures, characters and locations from the books are planned to be in MERP.
- There will be many quests to partake in: the Ringbearer Questline where you can play the role of Ringbearer as Frodo Baggins, a White Council questline where you can accomplish quests during the war from its many famous members, or simply free-roam to your heart's delight.
- We are planning a dynamic timeline where many famous events from the books, as well as events you've never seen before, will be occurring all around you! Perhaps you may be able to stop some of them? It'll take multiple playthroughs for you to see it all!
- There is no designated evil campaign, nor playable evil races, planned in the near future. The servants of Shadow (Orcs, Trolls, Uruk-hai, Ringwraiths, etc.) are bound to Sauron's will and without free will. Perhaps Evil Men (such as Dunlendings, Easterlings, Haradrim, etc.) will be playable (but no time soon!).
Release Dates
Due to us being a modding team and not a games development company, we do have other jobs and RL problems to attend to. This means that sometimes we have to wait for some people to be free before certain things can be finished, therefore this can halt releases. This is why we do not give out any specific release dates, as even we don't know when we will be ready with a release. When a release is eminent, then you will know!
Joining the Team
We are looking for a lot of talented modders to help us. If you are interested, then drop us an application at: Merp.straygenius.com |

This is relevant to my interests!
Does look fantastic, looking at those screenshots. But hopefully there are enough familiar locations and landmarks outside of the orthanc, helms deep so it actualy resembles Middle Earth and isn't your normal run of the mill landscape mod.

Well, from what I know they are working on this for about 3 years now and it will take at least one more to complete it all. Locations? Well, there will be plenty. They said they are making Middle-Earth as it is in the books. They are using things from the movies just when they don't have any idea about how to make something, taking just the info in the books. The map will be 4 times bigger than the one in Oblivion, from what I know. They are kinda' limited by the Gamebryo engine. They said there will be the epic battles too, but the problem will be that Gamebryo doesn't support big scales of npcs in the same place. So they said they are trying to give us at least the feeling that it's a big battle. You should go through all the stuff from their ModDB page if you want to know even more.

The stuff that people are doing with Oblivion is both amazing and disturbing at same time.

Looks interesting, but I had hoped they would use their own style rather than copying the look of the movies.

The screenshots do look gorgeous indeed; if they manage to create a decent main quest it will surely be a must.

Well, they said you can play as the ringbearer and as others too. The main quest will be to destroy the ring I think as it's happening in the time of the War of the Ring, but they also said there will be a very big amount of side quests. I'm curious about how you will advance in the story. I am a fan of Tolkien's work and I always wanted a game in which I can wander through all the Middle-earth. What I want from this is that amount of quests they promised and exploration which from what I understood will be worthy as you find a lot of legendary weapons and such.

Ah yes, another outstanding looking project that will, sadly and probably, collapse under it's huge scope.
As much as would I personally want, we still probably won't see this project 100% done.

there were so many promising lotr mods for various games that were killed off... what makes this different?

They're going to attempt a port to Skyrim. I hope they'll can as it's already obvious that some of Oblivion's flaws are fixed in Skyrim, plus it fits their needs better. Click the link above for further details about this.

I wish them good luck with that. The people were already waiting anxiously for a proper release for Oblivion (a release that even now, after all this time, seemed quite FAR away).
And now they announce the port to Skyrim? That's 5 more months (IF not delays are mixed in) PLUS a new start on the new engine, heightmap redone + placing everything from scratch + continuing working on the rest (quests, custom content) = ... lemme see... a release in 2014?
Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely LOVE playing such MERP mod, but this is just looking like a continuum dialog between modders and fan kids with little sense of reality and big hopes.
Yea, used to be one of these kids. And this is looking WAY too familiar. I simply can't be thrilled or highly optimistic about it.

Ambition has often been the downfall of many a modder. They should just finish the mod for Oblivion, rather then wasting so much time porting to a different engine.
