So I've seen a couple of posts concerning wisdom teeth popping up over the past few months. I've never had any aching wisdom teeth since I've had all 4 removed preventively.
The interesting thing about these molars is that people are starting to lose them, i.e. not everyone will grow all 4 wisdom teeth anymore. Wisdom teeth may even be entirely absent in some people. The reason they're disappearing is because the humans' diet has changed radically since the stone age. Especially since the last 50 years or so.
Wisdom teeth were originally meant as some kind of spare teeth when the normal molars would be completely worn-out. Which made sense because people used to be chomping on tough foods like raw wheat grains.
Today people are eating much softer foods so the wisdom teeth have lost their use. Evolution is still continuing and people without all 4 wisdom teeth won't die of starvation anymore. They're passing on their genes, so more people without 4 wisdom teeth are showing up. (Note to people without wisdom teeth: please reproduce yourselves quickly and plentifully so people will be liberated from these wicked teeth )
Plus the jaw is slowly getting smaller. People have simply got too many teeth to properly fit within their mouths. Wisdom teeth arrive incredibly late to the oral party, so their getting the least space and will usually be crooked. Which will eventually cause the infamous tooth aches. Oral surgeon to the rescue...
Now why didn't I study dentistry... because I used to hate the dentist. Not anymore however
NOTE My poll question means: how many wisdom teeth DID you have? I.e. how many you were born with so to speak. Which I think is relevant, because of the "evolutionary" aspect of nature discarding unnecessary teeth.

I have 2 that have grown, and one in my mandibula that is still hiding My dentist was quite surprised to see 3 molars instead of 4

Voted 3, one got removed 14 years ago with a lot of effort from the dentist. The roots of that molar had a V shape. He said back then that the other 3 had to be removed as well but here I am 14 years later and still having all 3 of them. One of them is kinda rotten though but still no pain.

OK, what I meant by the poll was: how many wisdom teeth did you initially have? I had 4, but all are gone now. So I should vote 4. My intention is to see if there's "evolved" people around here with less than 4 wisdom teeth

The pain is pretty gradual onset iconized, even at the most terrible, i could either sit up straight (laying down made it crazy bad) or drink some real cold tea and let it sit on the tooth to kind of freeze it. But it is coming mate..It is coming!
The one I got removed at first had an impacted one behind it, once I got one out the impacted one started killing me, I guess as it had more room to move, several times through the day the pain it would spike for about 4 minutes, i'd black out for those minutes and next thing i'd know was I was sweating and haunched over in a corner or something.

Have no problems with my teeth, and never needed to get my wisdoms removed.

Had all 4 removed at the same time. Cheaper that way (They put me under, and the most expensive part of the entire operation is putting you under. So save the money and just get all 4 removed), even though the ones on the top didn't need to be removed (yet). Bottom ones if not removed would have impacted in half a year or less.
Having 4 giant bloody holes in your mouth sucks. It really sucks. Can't eat anything hard for almost two weeks. But i'd rather deal with it all one time, then seperate times.
As for the usefulness of wisdom teeth I beleive it to be this (May be wrong though, just using common sense);
Back in the day, your molars were some of the first teeth to go due to their constant usage. So the wisdom come in to basically replace teeth that many people around that age would have potentially lost anyways.

Yeah, whether it be N2o or sleepy time you won't pay as much if you just get'm all done as they charge like per 15 minutes on the stuff.
An with yours they will probably be mostly surgical so you'll just get sewn up, makes it ton easier than having giant ass holes in your mouth. But i would suggest getting it done as soon as possible, it feels soooooooo good to have them out and be pain free.

That really seems like torture, having all four done at once. Money is not an issue in European healthcare, you can just take it easy and have them removed when and how you like. You still pay like €0.

In that case the answer is still 3, 3 came out, 1 got pulled, 2 are still there and one of those is very rotten atm and the 4th is still below a thick layer of flesh. |
Well what I meant was the amount of wisdom teeth you will eventually grow. Seeing you have a 4th wisdom tooth, you used to have 4 wisdom teeth.

Money is money. Yes, it is covered under insurance and I pay almost nothing anyways. That said, it is still money. Even if you pay nothing to have it done, you are still putting more burden on the system and costing money anyways. So be it everyones insurance rates go up, or everyone taxes go up - You alone doing that might not have much impact, but it all adds up.
And it wasn't as bad as you think it is. I'd much rather get it done and be over with then dealing with it multiple times.

I dunno know why those 4 teeth won't protrude in your mouth Neon, perhaps your development to adulthood is flawed? |
Well I have pretty lousy beard growth myself! And the beard hairs that did manage to grow are a pain to shave.

+1 - I'd rather go through 12 wisdom tooth removals than deal with 1 more day of that pain. If you're only getting 1 or 2 taken out they will probably just give you N2o, even for a surgical impaction. and the N2o is nothing but fun, you can feel them moving your head around but it's more amusing than anything. Definitely not as a bad as people seem to make it out to be in my experience anyway
