I wouldnt know what to call it.
A really good benchmark if you ask me, To me the game play was close to 0, due to the fact the gun fights being just way to easy. (Beat it on the hardest difficulty).
Linear is not really the issue, linear story telling worked in mafia 1, but their was cool free roam things you can do as well. And mafia 1 felt like a complete story.
Mafia 2 so many holes and weird, and random gaps, it was just, odd.

not so many choices, I say Mass Effect 2, Fallout new Vegas and Call of Pripyat even if bugged as always, three fantastic PC games.
