can't really pick one but one from :
Mafia 2 - world feels so alive
Metro 2033 - great atmosphere and visuals with some interesting mechanics
STALKER CoP - stalker badge is nuff said
Mass Effect 2 - good story arc and fluent gameplay
Assasins Creed 2 - a real leap forward in gameplay, didnt invest in the characters tho
Black Ops - best sp campaign of them all , but still , another CoD game
NFS Hot Pursuit - brought back the feeling from pre Underground/Hp2 NFS games
SC 2 , wasnt that good
Bad Company 2 , haven't played it online , but Sp wasnt great
to be fair , i can't pick a game out them all since there were still some issues i had with them , unlike previous years i can't decide on one single game , crap

5. STALKER: Call of Pripyat(gameplay).
As for biggest fail ...(fail = not necessarily worst)
I would have to say Final Fantasy 13.
I just couldn't relate to any of the characters and the game felt dead inside.
And character interaction... I don't even....
(Loved all previous installments, let the flaming commence !)

- Kane and Lynch 2 ( remember guys, the devs behind this little gem are probably the ones taking care of the Hitman 5/reeboot/whatever  )

I just don't understand all the hype and praise this game gets. The original was mind numbingly boring, and while the sequel was definitely better I just couldn't find anything interesting about the game after 3-4 hours.

Innovation? The only thing that game does is taking me back to the 90's with those awful FMV games and Dragon's Lair, that i hoped had died out a long time ago. It's just a very sad step back.
Haven't really played many games this year. Red Dead Redemption and New Vegas would probably top the list (have tried, but not played through).

Waiting for the <= $20 GOTY Ultimate Edition

Refuse to buy while UBI always online DRM is still in place
FOTY:- Elemental: War of Magic
Bought on release day. Worse way I have spend $50 this year With upcoming v1.1 it's even more obvious that vanila version was just a buggy engine, with a game in a fetus stage

I still have plenty of this year's notable games on my backlog: Mafia 2, Amnesia, Darksiders. Deathspank, etc... and I am only playing through New Vegas right now. So I'll have to choose from the games I did play, and in that regard:
1. Mass Effect 2 - it's not as great as I would want it to be, it didn't really impress me as much as the first one did, but it was still a great game and there just wasn't anything better for me this year.
2. Bad Company 2 - An MP shooter like no other. After all the repetitive CoDs, this was the game that actually felt different. Fantastic sound design and visuals and excellent gameplay. Captured the feel of battlefield like no other game I have played.
3. Assassins Creed 2 - A vast improvement on the original, much more variety and substance in the campaign and the story actually felt huge in its scope. The setting alone with its cities that feel alive are enough to make it memorable. The soundtrack is also one of the year's best, in my opinion.
Another game that is worth mentioning is Alpha Protocol - could have been so much more. It's still a great game at its core, but all the small issues prevented it from being an RPG of the year. It's a shame we will never see an improved sequel.
With BioWare's clues on the new game teasing a possible spy business, one could hope for a second chance though.

I did also like (but not good enough for GOTY nominees): Singularity, Two Worlds 2, Assassins Creed 2, Divinity 2 AddOn and the Borderland DLCs
These did not live up to their hype in my opinion (but were not bad either): Mafia 2, , StarCraft 2, Metro 2033,, BlackOps, Alpha Protocol
disappointment of the year: SplinterCell Conviction, Arcania (Gothic 4 ... wannabe)

i really liked red dead redemption and saboteur but didn't think either was top-three material
mw2 and army of two 2 surprised me how much fun it is in coop, but i would have hated them both if i were playing alone
