Mini review anyone? How does it compare to old NfS games (before Underground) and Burnout 3?

bad would be my guess, as this is made by the burnout devs... and looks and plays like burnout.

All the reviews I have read/watched say this is a good return back to what NFS used to be about.

I have the game sitting at home ready to FTP to my JTAG box, just need to make it through the work day.

This is an amazing game, finally NFS back to its roots, none of that simulation crap.

Cool Face Now ask the same in the PC section. Laughing

Simulation crap? Which one do you mean: Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted or Carbon? Laughing

Seriously, the same way that the Gansta-Nfs games went too far in one direction, Shift want too far in the opposite direction. This looks like the most promising NfS in years if the handling gets better once I'm used to it (disliked the demo) and if I can ignore the weapons for the most part.

the cop "campaign" is burnout 3 time trial/elimination mode with real world cars and gadgets, while street racer side is just burnout where you avoid getting taken down.

this game has about as much in common with the NFS series as gears of war has with my little pony, but who cares about franchise titles. it's got the right sense of hellish speed, gfx are good (environments could be a bit better tho), but most importantly, it's simply good fuckin' solid fun and a well aimed slap in the face of every simulation fan Laughing

Laughing

But how did shift pull in the other direction, if NFS, NFS3&4 and Porsche were all as realistic or more than Shift with unmodded settings (aka console Shift)? Also, Shift allowed to put so many driving aids on, that it almost felt like driving in Undercover. Laughing But oh no, people had to actually push the brakes once in a while, so "omfg, bring NFS series back to its roots" (aka NFS Undergorund Rolling Eyes).

I agree, although I thought the environment looks like one of the best I've seen on a Xbox360 racing game.

I'm not a fan of closed circuit tracks, they look depressing to me. Porsche had some beautiful countryside tracks which I missed in Shift and screenshots of this game somehow look like I expect a NfS game to look: mountains, coast, ocean,...

Oh we can agree on that, I would love to see a Shift-esque game set in the HP world, and I don't see people's point that it wouldn't work - of course it would, it worked brilliantly in the original and PU.
But I took the lesser of both evils, if closed circuits brings me the top visual quality and good driving physics engine, then so be it, rather than going for the breathtaking scenery with godawful driving physics. Shift should not have been part of the NFS series, it would have probably succeeded more if it wasn't, because then all the retards coming from Undercover would not have bothered, and Slightly Mad would have had more latitude to work, rather than having to create all these stupid aids for the kiddies who can't be bothered to press on the brakes once in a while.

you're right, i wrote that when i was just an hour into the game and going slow, thus seeing imperfections like grass etc... few hours later when everything is just wooshing by, combined with the absolutely stunning lighting, it's just perfect Very Happy

Something like Porsche Unleashed 2 would be a real return to NfS roots, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon I'm afraid.
I'm not too mad at EA for this one though since I also like arcade racers. I enjoy Mario Kart for what it is, I also enjoy the old Burnout games for what they are (Burnout Paradise was a disgrace) and I think I will be able to have some fun with this one the same way. The most important thing for me is that they moved away from the Underground theme.
