i have just bought and soft modded an xbox myself this week and also own a ps2 for @ 8 months with the swap magic disc... so this week i have been playing Halo 2 for the first time on the xbox and God of War on my ps2....conclusion imo= buy a ps2 and swap magic set, GOW does things from great heights to Halo2 in every department ...also an advantage with the swap magic set is you don't have to take it apart and get to keep the guarantee

I have all 3 consoles, none of them are modded so this is from a game only POV. I would go with the PS2 for overall value, it has a huge number of games, a whole load of developer backing and tends to fill every gap in the game market, some gaps which are not filled by the Xbox, Gamecube.
Before anyone telling me Im a PS fanboy, I own them all, I love them all and buy games for them all. But my PS2 collection is much larger due to the games being more well rounded. XBox - Halo, Halo 2, Fable. Gamecube - Resident Evil 4 (OMG THAT GAME OWNS), FF:CC. PS2 - FFX, FFX-2, Star Ocean, .Hack, Tekken4, GT4, GTA: VC, GTA: LA, Marvel VS Capcom... the list is endless.. Plus, the PS2 controller is nicer than the Xbox's..
Anywho.. only my opinion.

Ok since you asked which is easier to put a customer os on, Then its gotta be the xbox. Evo x is the best custom os by far, with lots of support for adding to it and plenty usefull options to it.Get mediacentre also and you have a nice setup easily. You dont need to have it on your box, but youll need it if you plan on fitting a bigger hdd or sending stuff to it by ftp, its easy to get so you might aswell use it. I know jack about any ps2 os, but i doubt they'd be anywhere near as pro.
Id say the best chip on the xbox is going to be the one with the most silly bollocks"amazing extras" on it which id say is the xecuter 3 ce, it also has very good support from the Xecuter team and is pretty easy to install for a mod noob. There really is so many good mods for the xbox you cant go wrong, unless you opt for a cheap and nasty one.
For PS2 I like DMS4 lite or pro, and Ghost2 best, again because of the reliability of the modchips and good support from the teams behind them. There is again a few others that are very good also. Any ps2 modchip is hard to fit for a novice and if your modding a slimline ps2 youll need laser protection aswell, which is more tampering. If your not too hot with the old solderbolt, as mentioned earlier you can use swap magic and a flip lid, which is fine for games, and far safer.
Overall if you want a smart os , an easier to fit modchip and options for media playing etc..get xbox.
For overall amount of games and variety of titles, with the sacrifie of harder to fit modchips and poorer os. Then its gotta be the ps2, just dont expect it to work after a year
