So I have here this GIF image with some ugly and pixelated edges. It doesn't really show in its original size, but things will get more ugly when its enlarged. I need it to look a little better because its size will be increased a lot.

So how can I smooth those edges in Photoshop? Blurring didn't really give the desired effect. It made the image look like it was covered in vaseline.
Of course I COULD manually trace the image in Illustrator... That would however mean a lot extra work because of the cartoony black edges. And I ain't getting paid for that Wink

In case you're wondering, that funny looking fella is Zwarte Piet. Or Black Pete in English. Sinterklaas' little helper, the Dutch Santa. Pete has to do all the dirty work diving into chimneys, breaking in peoples' homes to deliver presents for the children. In the mean time white Sinterklaas gets to casually ride his beautiful stallion and take all the credit

1. turn the gif transparency into photoshop layer mask (select nontransparent areas by ctrl+clicking the layer, and then click add layer mask)
2. add a black layer under the image
3. flatten the face image down onto the black image, but PRESERVE the layer mask
4. size it up
5. add a reference image of something in a layer under the image so you see how the edges look (or just fill it white or blue or whatever)
6. run median on layer mask (start with low values and see how it goes)
7. PROFIT!!

as an alternative to the median step, you could add blur(just 3-5 pixels) to the mask and then bring up brightness and contrast adjustment and pump the contrast up half way so it gets rid of the blurry edges, and use brightness to adjust the offset

if you find a nice balance where it's mostly good looking but there's a spot or few where it could use some more light touching up, grab the smudge tool, set it to very low (like 10%) and rub the layer mask where it's rough

layer masks are a life saver with edges

I don't have Corel installed atm but it's a simple colored image. Couldn't you resize it with Corel and then resave it?

hahah yeah I forgot that.

Years ago on IRC someone told me, and I just found it bizzare, I just figured stuff like that was exported across the world, not remade in / for some country's.

Still as I said its always nice to know.

Surely you can convert it automatically in Illustrator to make it perfectly resizeable?
