Hey guys, my missus bought herself a new Archos 5 Internet Tablet (the 500GB model) and we updated to the latest firmware, which is a derivative of Android 1.6 Donut - enhanced with 3D acceleration, but we just found out something pretty sodding lame; Android (or Archos.. one of the two..) have set the device so that it can only use 130MB for apps. 130 Megabytes out of 500 GIGABYTES!!! What the HELL!? So yeah.. she's pretty screwed on installing apps, especially Sims 3 which she's really been looking forward to playing.

I've been looking around for answers but can't seem to find any help except "Android 2.x lets you install apps outside of system partition" - which is less than helpful since Archos haven't released anything above their custom A1.6 install (Version 2.0.38 with 3D Acceleration). Is there anything she/we can do? Thanks everyone.

Join forum, ask to see if anyone knows about getting root access to it. If yes, theres an app on the market or you can download it (I could send it to you its free) called APPS 2 SD which allows you to switch the apps installations over to the SD card. This is a standard feature of 2.2 so hopefully it gets it eventually.

The issue with android when it came out was a lot of phones had crappy internal storage so there was only limited space to install shit. Those like cynogen saw this and were able to make it so you could do the apps 2 SD. Google paid attention and when 2.2 came around, they included it in the update.

The great thing about Android is, Unlike apple, google knows all the hacking that goes on, and their press release about it was, "We actually think it's pretty amazing to see the stuff some of these people are doing with our OS, like the dosbox port, windows 3.1, the customization of it all, it's very impressive"

Love'd google for that.

I own the same device and unfortunately there's no way to use the 500 gb right now. The 2.xx thing may be the correct direction of solving the problem but it ain't done yet. Hundreds of people are waiting for a solution so I guess you'll know it when something's done about it.

I've got a tutorial for root'ing the Archos, though I've been a bit hesitant to do it at the moment since it's not mine and if anything goes wrong.. I don't want the blame However, does that Apps2SD work when there ISN'T an SD card? The 7th series Archos 5 IT doesn't have an SD slot, instead it uses a SATA HDD.

Figures Sad

Whose boneheaded idea was it to have apps storage locked off so tightly? for a supposed "open" OS it seems incredibly restrictive Crying or Very sad People may say "Apple is teh debil and Android is teh sex!" but at least Apple give you the whole drive to play with.. not some absolutely preposterously tiny partition. 500GB and only 130MB can be used for apps... that's poor. That is beyond poor.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. I (well, "we", my missus and I) appreciate it

Rooting doesn't help, App2sd doesn't help, guess we just have to wait.

As to the positioning of devices it's quite simple (in case of the Archos IT). Archos has the 9 model which is supposed to be the best of the best and that's why they don't allow other devices to be 'almost the same but twice cheaper'. If you take an IT and add a couple of dozen apps that would complete its functionality then who the heck would buy 9? That's why the 'smartness' in the ITs is just an additional *bonus* feature whilst they still are big-screen media players and web-tablets.
