Then again, you might get a US region locked version if you buy it while connecting from a US IP address. But then again, if you are using a credit card issued in Sweden you will probably not be US region locked. Rolling Eyes

I know, all this Region crap is really shitty. I'm not sure that I dare to buy a game when I'm on vacation in another country anymore.

And you figure this... how exactly? They are dedicated servers. Just because one isn't in your backwater country doesn't mean it's not a dedicated server Razz


Because why should they be all nazid like that ??

What are the "Pros" for this ??

I dont understand whats wrong with the "True" Dedicated servers (Eg Counterstrike) ..

Just seems like a step backwards ... everything HAS TO BE CONTROLLED now.. just like the BC2 "Dedicated servers" :/

Defending this and saying its better than true dedicated servers makes NO sense

With Direct2Drive you get a download link to a zip file containing the files and folders from a DvD. You unzip it, and run the installer while your Steam client is open, and then you use your activation key that you get from D2D and voila! The game is now installing and registered to your Steam account. And then you have the right to redownload the game from Steam and D2D as much as your want (And that is why I don't get how D2D can make money on these deals).

Anyway, the D2D deal works, I have made exactly the same deal some months ago when I purchased Metro2033 on D2D (with an added discount). And D2D is a 100% legal store.

They ARE "true" dedicated servers, PERIOD. Just because you can't host one yourself doesn't diminish the fact that they are very much TRUE dedicated servers ... and I wager the ones from GameServers would actually put most people's gaming PCs to shame. I didn't defend the closed nature, nor would I ever, but I do understand why it's done; to prevent the very thing that everyone here is hoping for; to pirate the game and play for free on cracked servers.

Whether you like it or not, you're still wrong mate; they are very much TRUE dedicated servers in every way.

i was able to purchase a copy altough i'm from germany, since the homepage is buggy as hell it doesn't surprise me that they let me

Well i guess you are right about by definition they are "True Dedicated Servers"

However the complete lack of freedom pisses me off..

Exactly! Black Ops is a SteamWorks-Exclusive game But you will not get your key before Tuesday. So if you buy it now, you can make your life easier by downloading the files right now, so that you are ready to install on Tuesday when your key goes online on your D2D profile page.

Look at it this way, you get the game cheaper and with more privileges since you can redownload from both steam and D2D as many times as you want, but you don't have to use D2D after registering your key on Steam, your D2D account is just an additional bonus.

Nah, I blame the publishers and, sorry to say.. but us pirates too. Anyone can download a copy of COD4, or indeed any other FPS except for BC2/MOH, and play on cracked servers. This means less profit for the publisher.... so of course they're going to want to tighten it as much as possible. At least with Black Ops we're GETTING dedicated servers, as opposed to shit like MW2 where - up until recently - you were stuck dealing with matchmaking and if you're didn't like it; tough Sad

Still, don't worry over much - AlterIWNet have said they're going to be doing everything they can to support BO on their servers and since BO is the same engine as MW2 (and earlier..) it shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.

... wait, I think you're misunderstanding me (or I'm misunderstanding you) Multiplayer is free if you bought the GAME. You don't have to buy your own server, you can play on GameServers' own hosted servers. If you want total control over your custom games, that's when you rent one of their servers. MP isn't a monthly fee, dude, it's completely free if you just want to "play"

Now, if you're talking about pirating the game and how you wish they'd let you play for free; you're batshit insane Laughing

Forcing the use of specific servers is business. There's not much you can do. Especially if we talk about Activision and a succesful franchise.

Oh and... in case you (whoever that might be, I don't mean anyone specific) pirate a game you have no fucking right to bitch about that stuff whatsoever. Be grateful of whatever you get (even if its just SP).

Steamworks so very crackable. I predict a Day1 loader, followed by the usual scenewar of Skidrow and Reloaded. No crackable method will be playable online at the start, you'll have to wait for;

A. AlterIWNet to bring support for BO.
B. Someone to leak the dedicated server software and then crack it for illegitimate copies.
C. Someone to have the balls to upload cracked server software to their rented GameServers computer.

Personally? A is more likely Razz

My closest server is "1. (EU) Denmark" Sweet, neighbours Very Happy The Danish and Swedish (even German too) servers I've played on have always been AWESOME with real low pings.
