|
 |
I am about to purchase a new laptop. I have looked all around and it seems that all laptops come with Windows 7 Home Premium Edition? Is it worth it to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for a laptop?

Thank you for the quick replies. I did look at that table before but it seemed very general. This is why I was asking. I will be getting a 3D laptop that will be used for games, movies and school work.
One more question please. I want to max the amount of RAM to 8GB. What is the best brand for memory chips?

If you choose home etc or under ultimate you might find you wont be able to customize the colours and use aero features.. pain in the ass why home etc dont let u change colours and shit like ultimate does..

:\ Home Premium has full Aero support, including customisation. Where did you hear otherwise? It was disabled by default in Windows Vista Starter and Home Basic .. but it's available in EVERY version of Windows 7.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Vista? I'm serious; EVERY version of Windows 7 has full Aero support and all the customisation options that is inherent.

Hmmm.... I *may* just have an answer; there IS another version of Windows 7 I wasn't aware of. Ok we have the standard ones; Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate. Right? Well there's ANOTHER one that's generally only available in high piracy and "developing" countries; Windows 7 Home Basic. Home Basic has, just like Vista Home Basic, Aero disabled by default.
Now this begs the question; how in the FUCK did someone in your family get ahold of Home Basic? It's a piece of shit and practically GIVEN away in flea-market countries
-edit-
Holy shit.. the plot thickens! Apparently there's yet ANOTHER version! Windows 7 Starter, a laptop-centric, stripped-to-fuck, version of Win7.

Aaaaaaaand;
Quote: |
Windows 7 Starter is a significantly stripped-down version of Windows 7. Here's some of what it's missing, courtesy of a Microsoft blog posting:
- Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
- Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
One feature that will be most missed is the ability to change your desktop look. Don't like the background you get? Sorry, Charlie; you have to live with.

BINGO.

^^ Win7 starter only comes on low-mid range netbooks... even half-decent newer netbooks come with home premium so no idea how you can end up with that shit on any computer you own...

no idea sabin, but it was downloaded by myself off a msdn account a while back and it was called windows home lol.. so therei have no idea, but it maybe there was more to the home part under a dropdown or something, either way i think its pretty shitty stopping people just alter colours etc its hardly groundbreaking or a huge space saver if you dont have it.

win7 starter is for low performance machines and works exactly as advertised.
would you prefer you bought some atom-based machine that choked trying to render win7 eye candy?

cpu isn't the issue.
intel hd chipset/broadcom hd chipset/tegra2 chipset all work great with any shitty cpu (including atoms, CULV core2duos (I have a SU4100 in my laptop), etc). that's why I said low end netbooks ... the ones without ANY gpu acceleration.
