this will probably be long. i dont care if anyone reads it or not i gotta vent and there are no ears around.
for fuck's sake. i run a small computer repair shop. i'm a 1 man army. most of my days are spent being badgered with an endless amount of fucking stupid questions. so friday a week ago this fucking woman comes in here, during lunch while i'm eating because i have to leave the doors open, and she starts asking questions. she has her computer with her and i can tell, just by looking at her because yes after 10 yrs in this kind of shit you can see them coming, i can tell that she is trouble. she starts asking me some shit that makes no sense and i recall her repeatedly asking me about a "broken certificate". well, i dont fucking know what that is. 95% of what comes through my door is just spyware and virus bullshit that you either
a) get it cleaned with the usual tools or
b) end up wiping and reinstalling because it's the fastest and simplest method and everyone's a super fucking hurry to get back to farm-fuckin-ville
there's no sense in looking or researching anything like that up. she asks me after i "get into" her system if i can tell her what the "hackers" have accessed. now the correct answer is no, this isn't fucking CSI and for my flat fee of working on your computer i'm not going to go to the effort. nevermind i really am not equipped or educated enough in those matters. it's simple spyware bullshit. clean it, format it, whatever and reset your passwords on a clean box and be more careful next time. and oh yea, actually try updating your goddamn antivirus for a change and it MIGHT actually work next time. any fucking way i tell her "i won't know anything until i get it hooked up and see what's going on". again, she asks, but will you be able to see what the hackers accessed and if they have access to my bank account? i reply "i won't know what's even going on with your computer until i have it hooked up. so she asks a 3rd time and this time i get a little forceful and say "i won't know, i have no way of knowing anything until i hook up your computer, ok? you understand what i'm saying?" she nods and i guess conceeded finally.
now yes, i could have told her no there's no way to tell but you got to give me the benefit of the doubt here - i could tell her type. you give them as little information as possible. dont try to explain anything, ever, under any circumstances. never ever ever. it will come back on you, always. i do however tell her if you're worried about your bank account password just call the bank and have them reset your password on their end, problem solved. well, as i said, she's one of those, and this goes on for another 5 mins. my food is getting cold and i'm getting pissed. if you see someone eating, let them eat. she could've called and badgered me with questions later.
so after i told her that it would be later that afternoon before i even hooked it up and that it most likely won't be ready that day (read: will NOT) she shows up 2 hours later. i remind her of this and not in a rude way and she starts about her bank account again. i see an opportunity so i offer her the suggestion of taking it another shop around here, one that most everyone hates because they are so stupid and lazy. they take 2 weeks to do anything. i tell her how quick and courteous they are. she happily leaves with her computer.
well goddamn it, a few hours later she's contacted a friend of the owner of this business. that's a somewhat complicated story but basically i work for someone, although the repair part of what i'm doing is my idea and technically mine. it's a little complicated but we'll leave it at that. she's whined to that person that i couldn't fix it in an hour's time and tell her all she wanted to know, so my "boss" suggests to his friend that i wipe it and save her shit. so this friend calls me and asks me to do that and i tell her sure but it aint going to be today, don't care who says what i got other stuff going on. so the woman brings it in. i tell her what they have suggested i do and she says ok. she starts about her bank account, again. i tell her look the only thing i can suggest is to call the bank. they are the only ones that can do that for you. i can see this pisses her off because i won't let her stand there and ask 500 questions, the same questions, over and over. then she starts again with the broken certificate. she just wants to ask me question after question and wants me to explain to her, step by step, what's going on. first off i dont have the time for that and furthermore, she won't understand what i'm saying anyway. i decide a simple i don't know should take the wind out of her sails. nope, no such luck, she asks again. again i say i really dont know, i dont know what a broken certificate is. "but what is it, what does it mean?" she asks. at this point i snap, but hold the fragments together and i say "LOOK i dont know, ask me 10 more times and the answer will be the same. i-don't-know. i wish i could tell you but i just DO NOT KNOW what that is referring to or what it means. i see her eyes smolder but she lets it go. she leaves. yay for me

When you got to buy just a single thing like blank DVDs in a comp store, there is always a dumbass at the counter asking 86786 trillion stupid ass questions for like half a hour. I feel such an urge to tell him/her to just fuck off.
When a doctor treats you for some minor shit, you don't ask him to recite his fucking medical books, you just let him work his magic.

I saw a picture of some car repair shop's service prices a few weeks back, maybe you should implement something like that as well. It went something like
Basic rate 49/hr
Customer is observing 59/hr
Customer is helping 69/hr
Customer is in charge 89/hr
"Hey could you just quickly take a look at this..." 129/hr

ok so wall of text 2
fast forward to today. i've saved her desktop, and docs folder. i dig through other user accounts to make sure there are no pics scattered elsewhere. i save it all, run her manufacturers recovery and copy it all back when i'm done. i load up office, free of charge just to prevent a fucking phone call about it in the future cause she will not understand that it's not "free" with windows. i load all the service packs, all the updates. i install google chrome, flash, adobe reader, some other odd and end shit. wednesday she comes in to get it and that's a whole other wall of text. she kept asking me some shit and i had to get short with her. she started off by telling me she was computer stupid and didn't know anything about it and then proceeds to explain to me the intricacies of how "hackers" took over her computer through facebook. the phone is ringing and i know she can tell by the look on my face that i'm not interested and not amused by what she's doing which was to piss me off. i could tell. she then kept asking who to make the check out to. after 3 times you know what you're doing.
anyway a little while ago she fucking calls... where are her files, etc. she finally gets to the point. her email and address book in windows mail is gone. well, no one mentioned windows mail. that's not on my checklist of files to save. so the situation finally comes to a head. i shit you not, she spends about 10 mins saying the same thing over and over. i tell her i do what i was told to do, no one mentioned email. she should've specified that as the sheet on my counter up front says you must do. i list what i save and that anything that isn't listed you need to specify. she says i should've asked. she, as she puts it, "lays it out for me" and says you have very little patience. i tell her i agree and she says no actually you have NO patience. i tell her she's right, when someone asks me the same question over and over what little i have tends to leave. the situation escalates, and again she tells me the story over as if i wasn't here and didn't experience it, of course bending the details to make her look like a victim.
so i say ok is it my turn? can i tell my side of the story and she says yes, please do i want to hear it. so i lay it out for her - i'm one guy. i have a lot of responsibility. people like to come in and ask me dozens of questions. and when i dont give them the answer they want they ask me again or word the question differently hoping i'll answer it then. they want me to explain things to them that they aren't going to understand which will lead to more questions. i tell her i just dont have the time for that and that it's not my place to give computer lessons. well that just sets her ass on fire. once more, she begins the same story like a broken record. she couldn't talk to me, i was short with her, she didn't feel like she could ask me. she understands that i'm one guy and i dont have time to spend on the phone or answering questions. at this point i want to say " do you really? cause if you didn't you wouldn't be sitting here like a broken record wasting my time". i interrupt her this time and say well i'm sorry, i'm sorry i lost your email and i'm sorry i'm upset. here's what i'll do. i'll rip your check in half and won't worry about it and again i'm sorry.
nope that's not good enough. she wants to start bitching some more. i let her go a little bit, we go back and forth. she says her same shit about me not having patience and i remind her why that is. i get tired of it and i say "well look, i'm going to rip this check up (she starts protesting) and i just say no i'm ripping it up, i don't want it. i'm sorry you're upset, sorry about your email, and you said you understood i was one person and didnt' have a lot of time to spend on the phone answering questions so you should understand that i need to go." i shit you not i hear her *gasp* and she says well let me tell you one moer thing. i'm expecting a fuck off so i said sure, go ahead. she says "you should've asked me what i wanted to save." she starts to say something else and i say UH UH, that was one thing. you said you wanted to say one thing that was it - i gotta go.
so of course she said well let me say one more thing so i sure go ahead and she says "KISS MY ASS" so i said ok thanks bye and hung up on her.
if she had just had the decency to see that i was eating lunch that day i probably would've had a completely different approach to the situation. she would've still been a pain in the ass but maybe i would've had more patience with her. i doubt it tho. i just can't get over how she constantly contradicted herself and insisted on saying the same shit over and over.

@sabin - it's the picture iconized posted about the help desk burning you for asking stupid questions.
@yondaime - well i live in a podunk town so there's not many options without driving a good distance. i actually do get paid pretty well for running the place for what it actually is and then i make a good part for myself "moonlighting" on the repair side.
i dont have any benefits, no insurance or 401k, nothing of that sort but i can come and go as i please (not that i really get to but that is mostly by choice). i don't have to answer to anyone but myself unless something serious is involved. i don't get any sick time. basically if i'm sick i have to decide - am i sick enough to miss out on business or do i go to work and tough it out. about a year ago i got summoned for jury duty and talked a good bit about that. it's here in the bitching section somewhere.
some weeks i can bust ass and be done and if business is slow enough i can sit and play my xbox all day if i want to but believe it or not i've gotten bored with that so i don't do it anymore. i can set my own pace of how i work... i dont have to clock in or out, dont have to worry about being written up. doesn't matter if i'm 2 minutes late or 20 i'm the only one it directly affects. the consequences of it are along the lines of "did i piss someone off who needed to make a payment or drop off their box before work?"
to sum it up, for the area i live in and for what i do it's actually pretty good money. plus since i have no certifications or degrees all i really have going for me is on the job experience which may or may not work out for me later on. right now it's either do this or work in a mill somewhere and with the economy so fucked a lot of the jobs in this area have dried up. so that would mean driving 50 miles to the nearest bigger city and then working in a mill or getting a similar position to this.

most people that need other people to fix their shit, use webmail. If people ask me for reinstall i usually tell them to back up their shit on their own AND remind them to do that as well for their email. It s their data, they should know and care. Not me.
And i can really relate to that story although i dont even run a computer business.
