PM garus to be whitelisted, however I believe he is only doing people he knows to prevent griefers (although I here we are going to a new server after the halloween update), it would be nice to have someone else active to build stuff with.
theres a portal portal mod (valve's portal) where you can shoot portals in teh walls and use them just like in teh game. Would be cool to see people coming up with puzzles.
Could make some sort of huge portal puzzle to prevent people from getting to peoples shit. Only people that needed to know would know the combo.

Well I don't know about that, but just do something where the spawn point on the server is WAY far away from everyones shit. (Like 3 'far' draw distances on the world away. Which would be like half a draw distance in Hell) Then build a portal to hell in a hidden location near the spawn to begin with. (Cover it up with dirt and shit whenever you use it.)
Then once in hell, have the other portal be hidden as well.
Anyone who comes on the server to just fuck shit up will have to spend so much time finding where our shit is to begin with that they won't even bother.
I'm not sure if clients on SMP can use 3rd party mods to view a map of all the populated clusters, but even if they kind of know where everyones shit is - It will be so far away that it wouldn't be worth their time.
But yeah, you could have some 'fake' portals that just lead to like a pool of lava or a big ass obsidian prison that would take forever to dig out of. Make like a room with a portal in it that, if you dig out any blocks, fills with lava.
Naw clients can't use Cartographer or anything like that. It's a fun idea, might bloat the world size tho if walking in hell world generates the overworld map as well.

From what i've read Hell is completely seperate, and doesn't generate stuff 'overhead'. It's literally like another dimension.
Even so, 3-4 complete 'far' draw distances in one direction wouldn't cause that much bloat. Maybe 6-7MB at most to the map size. Not really that big.
you can totally edit the rights of any users that come on. Once the person is properly vetted, you can give them more rights through all of the txt files (users, ops, groups). I've been toying around with all of these settings and so far, it all seems pretty stable and good at keeping people from griefing. Also, you can suspend the building rights of anyone that you choose. Basically whitelisting only certain people to have build rights...pretty cool stuff with the right mods (hey0 and MineAuto are what I'm running).

I did try editing the single player world that I've got and making everything dynamite. The water, lava, dirt, gravel, sand, stone, etc. Too bad the game doesn't like that and crashes just as the world starts loading (it loads enough to see that everything as far as the eye can see is dynamite). Would be epic if it worked.
