Wow the companions are utterly fucking useless - they aggro shit 10 miles off even when set to melee, and die within 15 seconds of being engaged by any enemy. Worthless even as packmules as they can't stay alive for shit.

Anyone managed to finish the Ultra-Luxe mission without getting swarmed by those wierdos? Spoiler: | So I went to the investigator's room, killed the two guys who ambushed me, gone to the meeting with the contact, discussed everything, killed the assassin, went downstairs, messed with the chef's head a little, until he left me alone in the kitchen, cooked the fake meal, called the waiter to bring it up, which he did, freed the stuck-up asshole, sneaked out with him without alerting the guards down there, but from here the quest goes FUBAR.
First when I bring up the kid and try to talk to Mortimer about it, the game automatically skips all the dialogue (the text simply skips, like I had my LMB jammed or something), so I have no idea what the hell he's supposed to be talking about, and the only thing I can read is the last sentece that says, "get them".
But according to the wiki, here he should have run off, but instead, he along with one of the bouncers, the head waiter, and fucking owner, who's supposed to be against eating people goes hostile. so WTF. |

Do you have them set on passive or aggressive? I don't actually have any companion yet so don't know if it matters.

I made sure they are set on passive - melee only, but it doesn't matter. They'll run off chasing monsters off the in the fucking distance, or, if you're in a windy cave, through walls, and inevitably die.
Too much of a fucking hassle to keep them alive. Certain ones actually do good DPS (won't mention since it'd be a spoiler), but at Level 22, playing on Hard, any melee creature will rape them in about 4 hits. Can't protect them because I don't know where the fuck they ran off to half the time, and I'm not about to chase after them.
I chased after one once - right through a motherfucking mine field. Blew all four of my limbs off, quick-loaded, shot the stupid motherfucker in the head, and moved on. Never again.
From what I recall, Fallout 3 had the same fucking problem. The companions do stupid shit, pull irreversible aggro, and inevitably die. I should not have to babysit the motherfuckers, they are there for MY benefit, not the other way around.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Yeah, I was trying to press T to pass time but Boone kept aggroing things I couldn't even see. Right now the only thing I like about the companions are their quests.

@Immunity
At the very least, I recommend installing "Companions Are Essential" -- that sets the "essential" flag so that when they decide to go running into a nest of Deathclaws, they only get knocked unconscious rather than dying out right.

I don't get it. From what I remember, Fallout 3 companions were amazing. I seem to remember Fawkes pretty much playing the game FOR me. I could let him loose on Deathclaws and the dude wouldn't die. Surprised to hear New Vegas ain't the same?

Thanks, I'll give it a go on my second play-through. For my first time through I wanted to beat it vanilla, no extra tweaks/mods. However, given the fact that I've already irreversibly bugged two quests, and fucked my standing with a major faction (thanks, not surprisingly, to MY COMPANION aggroing them without permission, and THEN telling me he doesn't like them after I had to mow down the entire camp to save his dumb fucking ass) - I may just scrap this 30 odd hour play through and start fresh.
Or I may just shelve this game for a couple of months until they get the quest screw ups worked out. It's so aggravating to spend time getting 75% of the way through a quest only to have the turn in NPC be stuck inside a wall or have completely vanished.

Well, I played Fallout 3 (for the first time to completion - always got sidetracked before and never finished the main quest) literally less than two weeks ago.
I also had Fawkes (but used Charon for most of the game), and this was my experience (again, on Hard):
1. He ran even further off than NV companions do.
2. At my character level of 25, the glowing feral ghoul roamers (or whatever they were called), would melee him to death exceptionally quickly.
3. He stole all my XP when I used him.
Yea they were powerful - but again, far too much hand holding, and in my opinion absolutely not worth the hassle. The only reason I keep them around is because I am a loot whore. I horde absolutely anything and everything I think I might need later - and 250lbs. solo simply doesn't cut it.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

i never used companions.. maybe thats why i enjoyed it so much. i enjoyed wondering the wasteland on my own.
i did have fawkes for a bit though, but because i was so close to the end by then, i didnt have that many isssues, but i did have some... having a companion for the bulk of the game would have driven me nuts.. so yeah.. solo, for me, was the most fun. never had to worry about the tards and their ludicrously poor pathfinding abilities with the self preservation instincts of lemmings.
also, like i said... way more immersive and atmospheric to be alone in the game too.

Played like 30 hours already. Mixed feelings.
This game is not better than Fallout 3 in every aspect.
The mainquest is better, but really boring at times, seems everyone wants you to do something for them (literally every questgiver). And it's mostly, go there, talk to him, come back, deliver quest, get new quest, go there, at times I am feeling like playing Borderlands or some kind of bad MMO.
And let's not get started on the sidequests... Exploring is great, you will find a nice amount of secluded towns/areas, far better scenery than in Fallout3, but then it's the run of the mill quests again. For fuck sake...
And everyones excuse why they don't do it themselves is along these lines "me has orders to stay here, not enough troops, we have enough troops but then we would be vulnerable, you are an outsider so you not draw attention, blablabla." Same argument used EVERY single time...
thumbs up: mainquest, more diverse landscapes which really adds up to the exploring experience. More gameplay hours than Fallout3 (my questlog is always stacked).
thumbs down: most quests are really boring. I think they were too ambitious, due to the amount of factions and the many different paths you can go, they had no choice but to sacrifice the quality of the quests.
Me sad.

So here is a noob question for you. In these UI mods I see a Menu called Tutorial. I have played FO3 and I don't recall ever seeing this Menu. Is this a mod or is there a special key you need to press?

It's just a small tip window that comes up when you use VATS for the first time etc. and yes it was in Fallout 3.

Normal or hard difficulty?
I don't want to have to put a clip in a guy's head to kill him. I just want bullets to do decent damage to everyone including me.
Also, I've heard harder difficulty = companions are more "hardy."
Also, is hardcore mode worth selecting? I assume so since I like depth but is there some goddamn annoying bullshit factor I'm gonna come across that makes me hate myself for the choice?

I just started, but from what I remember in Fallout3, being overweight pissed me off. If hardcore mode makes ammunition takes weight well I guess I'll skip it.

You could always use a mod that increases carry weight.

yeah weight was the biggest problem i had with the game. it really kicked exploration int he balls, because i kept having to go back to dump shit off, or leave half the crap i find. i think this time round ill just hope for a mod that either completely removes the limit, or increases it to an insane amount.
ive allready finished the first game without any game play 'cheating' mods... so ive proven to myself i dont need to tweak stats n shit to get through... but i dont feel like suffering it again if it takes away from my experience more than it adds.

Hardcore isn't that bad. You need to drink/eat like every hour of gameplay or so and sleep maybe every 3 hours. Real life hours that is.
Dunno what else it changes since I've only played on Hardcore.

Very hard/Hardcore is the only way to play FO3 unless you want to fall asleep.
Very hard is more like.. normal.
I frequently one-shot people.. damned if I can one-shot radscorpions though.
It's nice how dangerous wildlife is on very hard. If a radscorp stings you and you don't have antivenom, you're as good as dead.
If you see a giant radscorp, you run the other way or use AP/mines/heavy weaponry.
Honestly for "very hard" the game is still really easy. I don't usually play on highest difficulty because i hate repeated frustration of retrying shit but here it's probably a must else you risk falling asleep; I have 40 or so stimpaks and 2000 or so caps @ 10 or so hours.
It will take more than one bullet to the brain often unless you're using iron sights or from hiding. Not like I die in one shot either. If you want realism you're going to have to wait for a mod.

Have you tried the DLL fix? Download http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6LHPT9ZC and put it into your game folder where FalloutNV.exe is.
Awesomesause, thank you for posting that!

This is the post I was hoping for. Going to go back and redo, I'm not even out of creation.
Thanks for the input.
From the fo3 wiki I also read (as I mentioned before) that companions are great on the harder difficulties.
BTW if you're like me and you installed the DLCs and then realized all they do is make the game easier with stupid bullshit OP stuffs, here's a link to what you need to delete (right click to delete).

I'm roaming the countryside before I even think of entering the Strip, so I have no opinion of it yet. I can say that I was afraid that the Strip would be somewhat of a letdown. Mainly because I knew I was going to build it up to be far more than it could ever hope to be. We'll see once I get there.
I do have to commend them on adding so much content outside of the Strip, especially when you consider that the Strip was all that was really advertised. |
Spoiler: | I'd have to agree on all accounts..they hyped the Strip so hard, but it felt like 3 small rooms with offshoots where the casinos should be. This isn't really a console issue, plenty of games do large maps without sectionals, This is just them being lazy and not wanting to use Seamless maps and setting up all of the triggers. The wierd thing is that they are already using them to a point or you wouldn't be seeing the geometry such as the Space Needle in the other zone. I agree, If they populated the casinos by ~%800 and added at LEAST 1 poker game..either video poker or maybe holdem, and converged it all into one map, I think it would add a ton to the experience.
|
p.s. Without mods..is the only way to repair armor is to use the exact same type of armor to repair it like the weapons? using my +5 sneak armor is great..but holy crap it's like 5000 Caps at the Gun Trader people to get a new one to repair it with. Gotta blackjack it up just to afford new armor
