Alright, I'm finally getting a new gaming rig. Choosing a GPU and CPU is fairly easy since there are only two big brands but the motherboard and case market are more complicated.

What I look for:
- a P55 chipset motherboard
- a case with ~500W PSU

I'm not interested in overclocking and intend to run games and encode videos at stock clockspeeds. The case should offer quiet ventilation but without sacrificing necessary cooling for a non-oc'd Intel i7 870 (95W TDP) and a Radeon 6870 (150W TDP). If a quiet case is not possible or not recommended for such hardware I'm willing to take a louder one.

Loving mine, MSI P55-GD65. Gigabyte's P55A-UD4 is also pretty damn good, although (I can't be bothered to check right now) you gotta watch out with USB3 motherboards, as most of them fuck with your PCI-E bus when using USB3. ASUS' P7P55D's aren't bad either, but MSI and Gigabyte are the better boards, even when not overclocking.

No reason not to overclock at least a little bit btw, even the stock cooler can handle a few hundred MHz without a problem, and overclocking Nehalem is easier than ever Smile

As far as case goes: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/ - check their reviews. Noise wise it depends on how you set it up; you can easily get away with just any case though, because if you're not overclocking running all the case fans at minimum speed while making sure to have good airflow will keep it cool and quiet Smile

As for the PSU: Seasonic X-560 for example. Great value and ridiculously well built. Just like the X-650 (which I have) its fan doesn't spin unless needed so it's damn quiet as well Smile

anyone who talks shit about lian li has never owned one and knows the craftsmanship that goes into them. Everything is perfect down to the rivet.

IF you wann spend more money look at the PCV series..

While SpykeZ is absolutely right, before you buy _any_ Lian-Li case, check what it's like for cooling in some reviews. The build quality is one thing, but there's a lot of Lian-Li cases that are pretty bad at cooling. When paying the obscene amounts of money they ask for their "top" cases, you'd expect those to be awesome at cooling, and they're simply not all the time Smile
