re: my storage space issues... figured out a solution... ill just replace my drives rather than finding a way to add new ones... 2tb drives are RIDICULOUSLY cheap now, so ill just get one of those to replace my ol' 500 gigger.
so whats a RELIABLE hdd brand. im kinda limited as usual in what i can get in NZ, so im looking at a WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLACK 2TB 64MB CACHE SATAII
yay or nay?
if WD are crap, what would you guys suggest in a 2tb flavour?

If not WD go for Samsung, if not Samsung, Segate.
I've been using WD since I started building computers 8 years ago and all but 1 drive is still going strong

theres also the green version - i THINK the difference is that it has a 32mb cache to the blacks 64... the green is cheaper, and if im just going to be using the drive for storage (isos + movies), is there any reason why i shouldnt go with the green instead of the black?
basically here are the ones ive narrowed down (NZ prices btw):
$175: Samsung EcoGreen F4 2TB 32MB SATAII
$175: Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB 3GB/s 5900RPM 32MB SATAII
$279: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 64MB Cache SATAII
$175: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB 64MB Cache SATAII
i think the WD Green is mislabelled as 64mb cache... everywhere else i see it listed as 32.

The Green series are a bit slower, but also less noisy and power consuming (although that's a non-issue with HDD's as far as I'm concerned ). For pure storage I'd just go with the Green, access times and transfer speeds are not that important for storage

Use green for storage drives, you don't need the performance gain the blue and black series offers and since your not using it for gaming, it'll run rooler, less power and run quieter

BTW, I'm getting a new PC and I wonder if someone here has real-life experiences with loudness differences between the Green, Blue and Black HDDs.

I never used blue's but I have used green before and their noticably quieter, not by a lot but if you run a few storage HD's the little bit of quitness adds up.
With that said I usually run my OS off of a blue, if you game run your games off of a black, storage for green

Shouldn't an OS (random reads/writes of multiple threads) profit more from the performance of a Black than games (sequential reads of big files) do?

I'm on a blue now and everything is already snappy. The most benefit you'd get is the starting of whatever you have running on that drive IE software starting up load saving etc. That stuff I couldn't care for, I'd rather use a black drive if I had one to load my games onto.
