I never knew about them, until I stumbled upon one of 20in1 on CD warez compilations that were popular in 90ties. Without that, I would never heard or played those great games. So hooray for piracy.
Amen. Played with Zdoom which adds mouselook is even better.
Also, another very good FPS/RPG that went unfortunately almost unnoticed (and still todays it's virtually unknown) is Amulets & Armor. While unfinished (missed NPCs, scrapped levels etc.) it's still a very great game - I believe it's based on the Doom engine as well.

After you found out about them, did you go out and buy them since you enjoyed them so much?
Wasn't possible. In those years my country had economic sanctions. So piracy was one and only source of games.
Out of curiosity - where do you live (no sarcasm/pun intended, just got curious after your statement)?
By the way, I got some other games for the list:
- Revenant. Little more than a hack'n'slash, but god it had a GREAT combat system - I usually despise this kind of games, but this one addicted me more than I though possible (as a comparison, I find Diablo II - which as far as I know should be the zenith of the genre - only decent but FAR too repetitive).
- Nox, another RPG lite, but this time it actually had an innovative feature: the initial choice of class influenced the whole playthrough, you'd visit places, solve quests and fight enemies in a completely different order than the other classes. The rogue-ish class in particular was very nifty because not only you could tame animals, but there were tons of traps you could make. Definately underrated even if little more than your usual hack'n'slash
- Evil Island, a action-adventure game with some RPG elements. It was LONG (like 70 hours for a single playthough) and it put a lot of emphasis on stealth, providing a very detailed combat system (similar to Fallout's - you could target different body parts and cripple enemies).

I can't believe no one mentioned Planescape: Torment. If there is one game in the history of gaming that deserved more, it's PS:T.

- Revenant.
- Nox,
- Evil Island,
- Planescape: Torment
Can't believe I forgot it. Shame on me.
+1
BTW Evil Islands was a sequel to Rage of Mages ( 1 and 2 ). Same world, different hero. Loved the combat system, I'd always sneak up on enemies and crit them in their heads ( yes, you could target body parts ). Played it recently, still great.
Ever tried to destroy the ogres on the first map? They regenerated like crazy but it was doable
Nox had nice humour . Intro: "Arande teh, arande tah *gust of wind puts out a candle* Damn cheap candles...ekhem arande teh *continues necromantic ritual* "
Also, it's a Westwood game.
Revenant...damn it, another classic I loved how Locke, the title Revenant, regained bits and parts of his memory. Shame it was a time when people waited for Diablo 2.
Planescape: Torment...no, mustn't write anything about it's greatness...mustn't harm people who dislike it...preciouss, oh myy precioussss... No one is allowed to even look at my original CD's, lest they be appaled by the sight of non-believers...
I played the shit out of a strategy game called Diggles (Wiggles in Deutschland). It was like Settlers, but set underground. Actually it was based on the code for a game called Cultures, something like that - the skills system was the same.
You had to dig out caverns to build new rooms, and sometimes you'd come across quest events or locations. Pretty exciting. You could brew beer from, I think, mushrooms. And you could eat hamsters or ride around on them. Classy game.
Epsilon: Game is great btw, I love it, so far it's a definite goty. It's remarkable how much has changed since the beta, stardock have been working their asses off, and it shows.

Thats ok you can just show them mine then instead.
Spoiler:

Boooo,booooo* hisssss* *hisssss*
Spoiler:
Also, my CD Box is waay cooler . 11 years old and still in ( nearly) mint condition.
It opens up so that you have all 4 cd's on the same plane.
Nice, what edition is that ie where did you buy it?
Mine is the northern european one.
It's a...eastern european one
Also got a cool t-shirt ( ok, a generic black one with a P:T logo on it ), a dictionary of the in-game slang...and it's totaly not true i keep them on a pedestal.
It's actually called a shrine
Not. Creepy.
Oh, i just remembered:
Disciples 2 and addons. Calling them "like heroes 3" is kind of derogatory, but they are kind of like Heroes 3.
Too bad D3:Renaissance fails so hard in living up to the legend of its predecessor.
Terra Nova: Strike Force Century.
100k copies sold. Made by the same people who made Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Thief etc. Soundtrack by Eric Brosius as well.

Oh wow. That looks interesting.
I was going to post PS:Torment but I see it's been mentioned a few times. Dwarf Fortress?

A lot of people outside the US probably know of this game.
Redefined the RTS genre. Had awesome graphics for the time, and the brand new system of being able to make custom units was awesome. Generally an all around awesome game. The sequel had amazing graphics as well, but the gameplay was unchanged and stale at that point.
Game isn't very well known though since it didn't get any real advertising in the US and had a limited amount at retail.

Uprising. God this game was awesome at the time. One of the very first games to mix FPS-ish elements and strategy at the same time. This game was so much fun. You drove around a tank you could customize with various weapons, and you also built up bases in various areas around the map. The bases allowed you to build units that you could then send to attack the enemy. Had pretty outstanding graphics as well.
The sequel, Uprising 2 was pretty kickass as well in my opinion.

Looks like shit now but those graphics were awesome at the time.
Another cool game that borrowed a lot from uprising, and was an AWESOME game was the Battlezone remake. This game was so awesome. Awesome graphics. Cool base building / FPS elements. So many cool new features. This is/was a well known game, but many younger folk don't know about it.
Thinking back to these awesome games makes me sad. Games these days fucking suck. It is very rare that a game now is anywhere near as good as some of the games I enjoyed back then.
