lol
I changed the audio codec in the ffdshow settings from libdts to libavcodec and everything returned to normal - audio much better.
Any ideas why this is? is there a disadvantage to using libavcodec over libdts?

Yes, it's really good, and this version restores some of the missing stuff from Mann's original director's cut, so it is really the "definitive" cut.  |

It has been like that since HDTV rips started to appear (e.g. long before Blurays appeared). Some are better than others, but usually they use old x264 builds and bad commands to encode fast as opposed to quality in order to release first. |

I haven't heard, but I don't follow scene news hehe. CHD and WIKI are a p2p group, but have a source at a Chinese printing plant, so they release very fast (sometimes faster than scene! ).

I'm waiting on a HD release of Inception. However, I didn't see anyone recommend the Blu Ray rip of The Thin Red Line.
I grabbed The.Thin.Red.Line.1998.1080p.BluRay.x264.DTS-WiKi which was very enjoyable.

I haven't watched it yet (you know they happily decided to postpone the screening of the movie to the end of September in Italy) so I've armed myself with patience and in a sign of protest I will wait for the HDrip
