He says he stopped production of Daikatana because no one was interested in it, and he was forced to stop his Sin remake, because the SiN IP holders, Mumbo Jumbo told MODDB he's not authorized to make it: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showpost.php?p=915480&postcount=72

I'm probably the only person in the universe (together with that guy) who is interested in a proper Daikatana Remake

I must say I did like Daikatana somehow. And a remake would be nice.

Actually he doesn't.

You mean it's going to have regenerating health, cover shooting mechanics, two-weapon loadout and everything but the 1st level ripped out for later DLC sales?!

One of these guys is Todd Seier, game developer who has graduated from Digipen: http://toddseiler.com/wordpress/ with experience in the industry, as he who has worked as a tester for Supreme Commander 2 and Left 4 Dead 2.

And the other programmer has left comments such as:

"Auto regen health + no weapon hammerspace = sucktastic."

"Cover systems in games are ways of indicating that the level designers and/or programmers were inept at giving you methods of hiding from incoming fire on your own."

"Quick-time-events are the worst thing to ever happen to gaming. And the second worst thing to ever happen to gaming are player usable cover systems. A proper cover system the player should instinctively be able to use, because it's just there. The only thing that needs to know how to operate cover is AI. "

I don't know other guys, but this guy only worked on small 2D titles. It might be enough, but he's gonna have to learn 3D stuff, and then UDK, and it's gonna take a while. It's hard to find game programmers out there, let alone good ones.

They've got quite a team behind this now. I just hope the lead visiting Gearbox doesn't give Randy a chance to durp him like he did to DNF

Though not complete yet Eduke32 via HRP and Polymer OpenGL mode is also pretty effective though it's beta and not everything is finished and some stuff will also be overhauled (And the addons is starting to see full support.)

http://hrp.duke4.net/media.php

Can't use it though as ATI don't have a good driver for this OpenGL version.
(Severe memory leak, upwards of 6GB RAM consumption after about half a level.)

http://forums.duke4.net/topic/4117-eduke-eating-up-6-gb-physical-memory-o/
(One of many threads, ATI has improved lately but they're never really been good with OpenGL, especially now with focus on newer editions of it with limited support for older ones.)

EDIT: If this is ever completed though (UDK full capabilities under DX9, DX10 and DX11 would also be neat, haha.) and works well enough (Staying faithful to the original as best as can be.) it'll be a really fun modification when finished but it'll take time.

And apparently there'll be an open beta:

Quote:
Gearbox Software has given the green light to a small Danish studio called Interceptor Entertainment to work on a remake which will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3. Jon ST. John will also be contributing to the voice dialog for the game.

There will be sixteen-player multiplayer with 4 playable characters and an open beta available later in the near future. The multiplayer open beta will offer two multiplayer maps and seven weapons including the Ripper, Shotgun and the Mighty Boot. Game modes will include ‘Dukematch’, ‘Capture The Babe’ and a play on Horde. Gamers can choose to play as Duke, General Graves, Assault Trooper and Pig Cop.

Nice... Tomb Raider Anniversary and Resident Evil Remake were AWESOME. Just think of how many old games could have been rebuilt on new engines for the number of manhours that have been spent by devs on LAME new IPs.

The Project Lead guy, demonstrated a demo build and several assets to Gearbox and Triptych: http://www.dukenukemreloaded.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=103&t=1613&sid=48864802d1c279267e51b836ceab3dd9

Quote:
I had 4 presentations to do, from 11 am to 5 pm.
A presentation and demo for the executives, Randy Pitchford, the Triptych team, and Scott Miller.

I can´t go deep with the details of the presentation or the feedback.
But what i CAN say is, that they were all very impressed.

They simply didn't expect what they saw, which warms my heart as a Game Designer.

One of the great comments was about the development time.
They were simply amazed by what we had been able to pull off in 6 months.

The Triptych guys were really great.
Expecially, Allen Blum was a really great guy!

He asked a lot of questions through the Demo, and one of the levels I Demoed, was actually based off his original map.
I told him about the new level design differences, and he was very curious.
He also asked a lot of questions about the level design, and was generally very impressed.

When i showed them the characters, (I demonstrated the Pigcop and Duke) there were a big "Wow" in the room.
Especially from Allen Blum.

I also showed them the Duke model, they felt that this was one of the best Duke characters they had ever seen.
Allen told me that this looked exactly like the original Duke 3D Artwork, all the way down to the smirk, jaw etc.

After the Triptych presentation i talked a bit with Allen about the older versions of DNF.

At 4 pm, Scott arrived. This is one of my big idols, so it was a very great meeting.
Scott it an awesome person. VERY open minded.
We had a great talk about the Shareware revolution, some of the early days of 3D Realms, what Max Payne actually looked and played like when 3DR first got it
(Before it was called Max Payne, and before it was a 3rd person shooter, etc.),

Afterwards, I started the demo. He was equally very impressed.
And he actually told me that this was exactly what he hoped for with this project, and we spent a lot of time, talking about the project.

The Conclusion?
I cant get into details about the results of each presentation.
But let me say this.

We are currently finishing up a big plan for the final polish push of the Multiplayer Beta.
And we are all very excited on the team.

We are also starting a discussing on our media plans with Gearbox Software atm, and once we have more to announce (And Show)
You guys will definitely know about it!

It's nice that it has become in some ways "official", this means a bigger chance it won't die.

Also for those thinking "that's nice and all that Gearbox saw this but why haven't they shown anything new to.. you know.. us, since forever"? Well:

Quote:
But since we are working on this, based on a license from Gearbox, all marketing related announcements (Screenshots, In-Game videos, etc), are controlled by Gearbox. We are a part of a bigger IP strategy, and we - as well as our fans - have to live with this.

This only means, that once Gearbox decides that its time for Duke Reloaded to show its muscles, you wont be disappointed.

This is why the meeting with Randy etc was necessary because Gearbox has to get updated on the work being done to decide when it's time to show it, and how.

A weird way to make a mod, but let's remember it's actually more than a mod, it's a full blown remake and they could easily stop its production if they wanted, but instead they set those rules.

And:

Quote:
A faithful-but-fresh re-envisioning of one of 3D Realms' greatest endeavours, Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded will invite players both new and old to experience the seminal action-shooter in high-definition. Memorable locations such as Hollywood Holocaust and Shrapnel City will be respectfully recreated with new and exciting vehicular sequences, non-playable characters, scripted events and all-new interactive experiences.

Quote:
Q: Will Duke Reloaded, play like the original?

A: Short answer, No.
Long answer: The game will play like "most modern shooters". But our highest priority, is to keep the "Duke Feel". Insanely fast running speeds, and hyperjumping are a thing of the past. That is not the direction we are going for.

Quote:
Still there are all weapons, non-regenerating health and the mighty foot.

Quote:
By "The game will play like most modern shooters", we primarily mean the way the player moves, shoots and explores his surroundings.
This is mostly in terms of the player movement speed, and level design.

Level design principles have changed a lot since 1996. Long gone are maze-like levels, and keycard hunting.

But we have decided to keep 2 essential things. A full weapon layout (No 2 weapon limit),
and classic health-packs, armor and inventory - Just like the original.

We are also implementing a few new things, to keep the game balanced.
