Err. Get out of here insanity wolf!... What a douchebag.

Anyway!
Since I don't have access to all those 1337 private torrent trackers and one click hosters are sprouting up like mushrooms but are still all shit it's for me to seriously think about moving to usenet.

So tell me about your favored usenet provider, newsreader and search engine! (last two preferrably free of charge).

p.s.: I've been reading up a bit and as far as I can tell the providers do not log what you download but just how much, right? Or would I have to really be on the lookout for providers that in fact do log what I download?

edit: oops. typo. of course that's insanity wolf! :/

TweakNews came free with my TweakDsl subscription. Hundreds of days of retention, no leeching limit, 99,99% completeness. The usual goodness.

Only available in Holland though.

Don't really like Grabit as there is some weird process that occupies both cpu and hdd if im not mistaken after download complete.

Newsleecher is pretty awesome usenet client.

The only thing I can think of that Grabit would do *after* the download has completed, is to check for PARs and/or extract your downloads. Both options are just that; options. You can disable them and then once Grabit is done downloading - it just sits there doing nothing.

No they don't, mate.

NewsHosting accounts are limited to a single IP at a time.

We had this discussion before and it's a VERY rare thing to find a provider that allows simultaneous IP-sharing. Now, if you mean that Astraweb doesn't allow you to share the account over different IPs, then again; incorrect. I've had Astraweb for years now, sharing with my wife, and we both use the account when I'm out of the country. She uses it from home in Norway and I use it from the UK when I visit my family. You can't use it simultaneously, but you CAN share it on any number of IPs.

Newshosting actually does allow sharing up to 2 IP's at same time. Ive been doing it for some time with others. Usenet used to allow more than 2, but recently changed it to just 2. Newshosting allows up to 2. Not sure why they say differently on the site.

You keep referring to Usenet as a provider when it isn't, Usenet is a collection of servers. Are you talking about Usenet.net?

Might give 'em a try.
I suppose they don't log your downloads? As in what and not only how much?

To my knowledge, no providers log downloads - only usage data. Wellllll.. they CLAIM not to, so as to protect the privacy of their customers, but still..... Laughing

Ah, gotcha. It's still rare to find a provider that explicitly allows simultaneous multiple IP connections. Good that UNS does, but Newshosting state that they do not :\

Or just pay like $5 a month for hotfile and be done with it. Usenet was nice before 1 click hosting showed up.

Or pay 0$ for Megaupload/mediafire

But I'm a particular case, since my connection is so slow that I wouldn't even notice the benefits of usenet's No Speed Limits feature!

Problem with one click hosters?
Like I said they sprout like mushrooms but most of 'em suck. And because there are more and more of them it gets harder and harder to find what you're looking for.

@ixigia
Megaupload is... decent as a free user. Mediafire rocks but I almost never find stuff uploaded at mediafire.

I just read up a bit on usenet, how it works, how to behave etc. and I find it quite amusing that german groups seem to be a bunch of elitist pricks Very Happy
I know most of you probably don't use their usenet access to actually read stuff but I found that quite interesting. However german groups apparently throw a fit if you don't use your real name O.o
Is that a german thing or are english speaking / internation groups as pissy about that subject?

Well one of the principle ideas behind filesharing on Usenet is that it's anonymous... so I doubt you'll find many people willing to use their real name Very Happy Besides, how are these Douchey McDouchersons going to know if it's your real name or not? I'd just make one up Laughing
