Carmack might be considered a "genius". I never thought this way with carmack, just always thought he was good at programming.
If he was a genius, he'd be solving true scientific equations, not C++ programming bugs.
As for him getting back into games, because he saw his son play? Well fuck carmack, if his heart is out of making games, then the game will be garbage.
And I was able to divide and multiply at age 5. Most kids are. |
Carmack was a great implementer. He took stuff that was gfx research and made it run on consumer hardware. Even if you're going to write off pioneering a genre of video games and a significant step forward in video game gfx, at least look at his more recent work making a lunar lander for the X-Prize. His rocketry work is also above average.
And yeah lets all hate on carmack cause it's cool to do, nevermind that there's industry veterans working at id that still love gaming. zz

So? What? Should I suck carmacks dick like you? Just because the dude did some great stuff 20 years ago, dosen't mean hes still doing great stuff.
He's a sell out. And I don't like sell outs.
Your just sucking on carmacks dick, good for him, and his Lunar Lander, and xprize. I wish him the best.
But I am focused on gaming on this forum, not Lunar Landers.
As for ID having people their that love gaming. Did they not outsource most of their latest work to Raven software? They have been workign on rage for an ungodly ammount of time.
We all know that Rage is not gonna be that good, im sure the RAGE engine will. ID has become like Epic games IMO. Engine Developers, not game developers.

What @xDBS said, 100%. I've called him a pussy sellout myself as well.
He did some good stuff, respect is due where respect is due, but then he crapped on all that with his latest behavior. Sorry, but I just cannot respect this man.

Heh, the debate here has turned into "OMGZ he did g4m3z in teh past, n0w he dosent, he suxxorz", like he owes us something.
John Carmack was a clever programmer that worked ridiculously hard for 15+ years to create next-gen game engines. Then he lost interest or needed a change of pace, sold his Ferrari's, got together with some rocket scientists and spent most of his time doing what he was interested in while messing around with mobile phones just for kicks.

I can't certainly blame him, if I was in his actual condition I would probably end up being in the middle of a Caribbean beach sipping some Martini along exotic sexy dancers

Because he's not, he just one out of the many bad ass programmers in the gaming industry, he just happened to get a lot of recognition because of his past. |
Well can't you say this about pretty much anyone?

It's not as much "hating" as it is "not buying into the retard hype". D3 and Q4 were hyped to shit because they came from id software, and both were a disappointment really.
| Frant wrote: | | John Carmack was a clever programmer that worked ridiculously hard for 15+ years to create next-gen game engines. |
Substract 5 years from that and you're in the right zone. Since Q3 he hasn't done much programming; during the period in which Tech 4 was developed, he was only involved as a Technical Director. In other words, he made sure the work got done but most likely wasn't really involved in it.
That might very well be the reason why Tech4 isn't as popular (or good, for that matter) as the previous iterations of the engine, who knows.
All I know is that id and Carmack haven't shown much since Q3. I've said it tons of times before, but the last game to come out of id's workshop is D3. Q4, ET:QW, Wolfenstein and whatever was in between were all developed by other companies. For me, that means the last game worth speaking of from them dates back to 1999, which would be Q3. That engine was genius, the game itself was brilliant, but after that we've seen absolutely nothing from them. Some of you may have liked D3, but it was a terrible game that really needed the patches it got to run properly, and for me the horror-aspect was barely there since it was all far too predictable. It didn't have the simple straightforward carnage Doom 1/2 had either, so it didn't grab me at all.
I have got nothing against the man, but I'm also not buying into the hype just because more than a decade ago he made a bunch of games I loved. I'll gladly get back on the bandwagon if Rage turns out to be awesome, but I'm keeping my expectations low.

i m a big id fanboy, but what i have seen at the gamescom wasnt really something to get your knickers in a twist over. But i ll reserve my final judgement to the point when i have actually played the game.

I thought it looked quite decent at Gamescom. While I'm not holding my breath I'm sure it'll be a good game. (please don't prove me wrong universe!)

well, it looked like fallout with cars, but not as good. The enemy-variety wasnt big and they looked kinda uninteresting (apart from the big one at the end). Given some time and polishing it still might turn out a great game
Diablo3 was the one game that blew me away at GC, so maybe other games where kinda overshadowed by that

I thought the idea with the different bandit gangs with different foci were quite a nice idea.
Like the greaser type, then the athletic jump around everywhere type of gang etc.
Plus I didn't see D3 mainly because after roughly 6 hours I just didn't wanna wait in another line and seeing Dragon Age 2 really put a dent into my motivation. Derpy game is derpy :/

Nope. I was there friday 10am or so and the line was already like "wait for 4 hours" and I wasn't gonna do that.
Longest I waited was for CoD: Black Ops (about 2 hours or so) and to be honest Crysis 2 didn't really interest me. I'm sad I didn't get to see The Witcher 2 though.

I seem to remember a pretty long line at a booth which I thought to be the Witcher 2 booth.

You must have missed the whole Gears of War thing, like the game/s or not Epic does more than engines
DLC sucks ass but seems to sell well
I recall some hate on the Prototype forums for the game having no DLC, there's a demand for it, ID would be idiots not to jump on the bandwagon

You call Gears of War a game?
I never knew a 5 hour single player, and a shitty multiplayer was considered a game.
Well, I guess today it is eh?
