Why all that hate to Gothic 4? Actually, I think this game will be good.

Um, because the demo was laughable and not in any way remotely similar to Gothic?

Don't think he meant he was laughing with the game.. more like laughing at it.
I didn't think it was that bad, but it definitely didn't hold my interest. I think the graphics engine is pretty impressive though it didn't run as buttersmooth as Risen.
I just restarted Gothic 2 NOTR (Nvidia finally came out with drivers that work with it and W7 x64) and died about 10 times in a row versus a wolf 10 minutes into the game... I don't think many people would find that enjoyable nowadays.
Although... Demons Souls sold pretty well and it has a few nasty boss fights.

Yes, Morrowind had quite the crappy combat system.

Well, thats because you really had to master the combat system (which was pretty good for that time). Also Gothic II, unlike Gothic IV was open, so you could always level up and come back later to get that wolf. Nowadays people prefer to fight against 5 wolves simultaneously on lvl 1 and still win. No danger, no adventure and no sense of achievement anymore.

I know, i was a bit rusty. Thing about Gothic 2 combat was exploiting the AI's repetitive moves. They would keep trying to do the same thing over and over again, and if you got them in this loop, you could win by repeating the side slashes. And of course never taking on more than one enemy until you get stronger. As repetitive as the combat is in G2, it's still fun and worlds better than Gothic 3's terrible system. Getting the timing on parries is just plain satisfying... I am so glad they revived this system for Risen and modernized it and made it fluid, and disappointed the devs axed it for this Gothic spin-off.

Yes, but he's not the main character and it's not a PB game.

That and the stupid sound you get as warning whenever a foe starts an attack on you. By the time he charges (or for that matter, the sound finishes playing) I've all the time to go grab a beer, take a nap and be back in time to get bored while waiting for that damn foe to act.

I'm still looking forward to this. Sure it's not a Gothic game, but that doesn't mean it's going to be bad.

Aye, it really only was a demo.. so I'm hoping (against hope >_>) that the full game ends up being more enjoyable. I can see why some dev houses don't release demos lately... because after playing that; there is no way in HELL I am buying the full game. Not unless something drastic happens in the meantime, like me getting a lobotomy or the game actually - gasp - turning out to be rather good.

I dont believe that AI retardness of such proportions would be a demo or beginning of the game only "feature". I bet the hardcore fanboys over at the g4 forums are arguing that everyone against the game should shut the fuck up and realize that its only a demo and the full game will be the next coming of Christ (which is a pretty standard and hilariously stupid argument most fanboys do, and is never the case).

Invisible walls were confirmed for the full game as well apparently, mostly in regards to story progress to unlock new areas or some such and that so that AI acts up isn't that shocking seeing that it's also been mentioned in various previews and early reviews.
(They give clear visual hints and notices plus attack slowly in regards to more strong attacks or special abilities like spells plus the difficulty level is nearly only in regards to damage dealt and damage received so it only prolongs the battles, of course Gothic 3 had initially the same problem.)

After G3 I was doubtful about JoWood continuing this series. Especially with such a unexperienced team like SpellBound. The result of this collaboration is now playable and without a doubt it is viable. But a Gothic? - Not for me. There are too many things missing which are characteristic for the Gothic-experience. The familiar Skill-System is gone, the big and open world gets a corset and the normal setting of difficulty is far too easy. Sure you'll meet some known faces of the story and you can disable all the comfort if you wish - but nonetheless this title does not deserve the name: Gothic, because it is raising wrong expectations.
Arcania sure is fun despite all of these point of critics - But as a fan of Gothic I still prefer Risen |
German reviewer says, not Gothic, invisible walls, faulty skill system, too easy.

Im sure its been stated before , maybe diffrently, but i wonder how many people that have spoken badly about this game based on the demo might have otherwise givin it a better opinion if the name gothic was taken out. If it was just Acrania, i think ppl are too hung up on the gothic part. I think if you look past the name you find a competent RPG , sure its not GOTY but good enough in ts own regaurd. much better then alot o RPG's ive played latey for sure .

If you put "Gothic" in your game's title, standards will be high. Spellbound claimed at day one they were big Gothic fans and that their game would have the same atmosphere. If you say you're going to make Gothic, people will expect Gothic.

But it hasn't or wasn't. It is called Gothic 4 and therefore falls under the same banner and should be judged as such.

Then you've got extremely low standards. I can't name many recent RPGs that this bests.

rofl | That looks like a bug or hack; or very slow computer with a good graphics card. If you develop a game and you actually test it, you fix things like this. In every single game I know, if an enemy cast a spell, he will turn in your direction, if you move, unless there are a serious bug, or is a beta.

Buy a crap game "Arcania: Gothic 4" for 40€ or a rerelease of a good game on GoG "Planescape: Torment" for 9.95$, I'm going for the rerelease eventhough that I've played that game to death, hehe I made a funny, but it sometimes pays to support good games - one can hope atleast.
People who say "It's only a demo" and it shouldn't be judged based on the "starting area" for one thing, theres not one game developer who isn't japanese that would like the players to not have a good time right from the get go and get sucked into the game.
Secondly it´s not an mmo, so the game won't vastly change outside of the "starting area" all the systems that make up the gameplay will stay the same.
Yes as I stated earlier, it´s called Gothic and will be judged as such, just like Fallout 3 was compared with the previous Fallout games and found wanting.

Well for me, judging the difficulty of normal and bashing the game based on that when the hardest difficulty isn't available would be prejudice. But for things like this simple combat exploitation shown in the above video then I'm thinking that the demo is probably true to the full game.
Would be nice if the full game's combat didn't have pauses like that so that you can walk right around them and they are oblivious to where you are. That's just silly. I also found that in the demo and exploiting it is very simple, just move a little bit and they'll miss and then attack with guaranteed hits. This is why modding is so very important.
Is G4 modable??? I know there are .xml files but.........
