Hmm can't agree with that, different generations of gamers (and we have many by now) just have different tastes. In general youngsters like fast paced action and no boring walls of texts but me rather have a RPG that focusses on story instead of hack 'n slash.

ok
so lets get some more input from me
when Adventure games jumped to new medium ... ze CD, all where voiced .... and when you play those and hear them speak those text lines... its hard really ...really hard going BACK to reading text...

Example :
Shadow of Comet

would you be able to finish this game without this, wonderful voice acting ... would you be able to play the 5 disk version without voice acting hmmm... no??
or
DUNE CD version

and yet some games are only playable without voice acting like marvellous Enchanted Arms

but then there are some games that where made like a book ,just like Folklore or PlaneScape Torment to make you read them loud

its how to put it, laziness made games SUCK ... the ONE button game mode , the evolution of laziness and the popularization of games made them compatible with TV .... made games evolve into a mass media of suck , something you turn on and watch just to enjoy and relax not to participate but to waste your time... they made games into a derp thing... with run time of a movie to not bore you, to not waste your attention span , to not depress you... that's why i love Japan games more then american stupid mass media of brown

Speaking about nostalgia :

I remember i was about 8 years old (now i'm 33) and the first computer game i played was on a huge FELIX C256 mainframe (it was actually a french IRIS 50/70, built under license in my country), at my father's workplace. It was an ASCII graphics only, Loderunner-type game (it was made by one of the programmers there); my father brought me there when he was in the night shift, and i used to play for 8 hours straight. Of course you couldn't save the game, there were no checkpoints (the mainframe had only 256 kb ferrite RAM memory, and the storage devices - magnetic tape and Winchester disks - were used for other purposes), no graphics apart from the monochrome green-on-black ASCII - and i kept playing till i couldn't keep my eyelids open.

Ahh, but that's a whole different kettle of fish. That game STILL have the same amount of text/data no matter whether it's voiced or not Wink You get a BENEFIT from having the voiced version, but it's still the same game. You are right though; it's hard to go back to the SAME GAME once you've had voices instead of just pure text. Case in point, Dreamweb (one of my all-time favourite games) - I simply won't play the original any more, not after playing the PC-CD version with full voice overs. The voice-acting was absolutely superb in DW.

This Voice thing on adventure games reminds me of the Commentary from Monkey Island 2 SE. Ron Gilbert and Tim Schaefer plus one other guy talks about how great it was to have the freedom they had to improvise and change stuff like jokes and puzzles on the fly, and how that all changed after games got Voice overs.

It just stuck with me, because I had never thought about that despite it being pretty logic.

youre an old man. you have to realize it

Old you say or just smarter? I am not even 40 yet and I remember the days he speaks about.I can run circles around a good deal of kids.Hahaha. Rolling Eyes Its got nothing to do with age and old is a mindset, not a number.

People have lost touch with the things that made games great.A labor of love by the programmer put into the software, corporations not running the show and calling the shots at what goes into the software.Actual printed manuals included with the product,no not just a few pages of key commands! Gameplay coming first and all other stuff second, yes gasp,to include graphics.

Lets face it kids are getting dumber and dumber as each generation goes by.Not all but enough to be alarmed by it and people are getting so damn greedy that a good days work is sadly lacking and quality is also becoming 2nd or even 3rd rate.

You know what I really miss, guys? I miss instruction manuals that you actually HAD to read in order to get a handle on things. *sigh* Hell, I just miss the printed manual. It was a ritual of mine to read the manual from a new game on the bus ride back from town :'(

Exactly! And often there would be fun stuff in the manuals that expanded the world of the game and sometimes gave subtle clues to what the plot was about. Take the Quest for Glory and Space Quest Games...Those manuals were hilarious, with fictional newspaper clippings from the game universe with all kinds of jokes on real life and on gaming in general and much more. Very Happy
To me SQ4 and QFG4 really stands out, I mean, how often do you have several good laughs while reading a manual? Laughing

QFG4 had stuf like "The Necrophilicon" By PH. Craftlove Very Happy And an opinion piece by a Fortune Hunter named "Hands ollo" who wanted to know how he could become a more honest man since he really wanted to become a Paladin Very Happy And, yes, the player could also become a Paladin by following some advice given to that "Hands Ollo" guy.

Ps. Still got those manuals in their Original paper form Smile

Or how about Frontier, which had a huge novella with the game that actually spoke to you like you really HAD just inherited an Eagle Mk2. Ahhhh... those were the days.

Darklands on
It's one of my favorite rpgs, the knowledge of which is one of the primary reasons for me, that something like Mass Effect will never be a classic.
Ignorance is bliss, so definitely don't go to Abandonia and download this game if you want to have any enjoyment from the next derprpg.

I still have Darklands on CD.I absolutely loved that RPG.It was epic, set in medieval Germany.Very historic in its presentation, loved all the weapon and armor options.Dealing with the Hanseatic league.Going into towns and accusing the mayors of satanism!Trying to find the witches gathering on the solstices and slaughtering them.Hahaha.
