He's somewhat right, this is more of an armored core 3rd person action than mechwarrior heavy gear 1/2 simulation robot/tank type gameplay.(american vision of battle mechs vs japanese gundam fast paced action rocket mechs)
Wouldn't say it's a "gimp shit ass game" the customization is quite nice, but obviously it doesn't have the depth of heavy gears 1 or something like that (thought that game you could edit the hydrolic pumps individual legs of your mech)

Evolved is now, sadly, part of the same genre as Armoured Core.. but the REAL Front Mission titles are turn-based strategy RPGs.

It's just Evolved. Who knows, maybe they'll announce a Front Mission 6. Besides, you should learn to embrace change. Your life will be less stressful that way Very Happy

You mean just like Front Mission 5 that never saw an official English release? YAY.

Haha, touche Wink

You could always emulate it....I thought I saw a translation patch floating around. Could be mistaken though.

You're 100% correct and that really just slams my point home; SE would rather butcher one of their oldest running series, than translate one of their existing games Sad It took the COMMUNITY to fix their shit. I'm really hyped about playing FM5 properly, but - like FM4 - it's not emulated very well for me, so I'm gonna run it on my PS3 instead Very Happy

Has anyone tried the Front mission 5 english translation?

Is it good?

EDIT: did not read previous posts, so the emulation is bad crap frames or not working at all?

I'm gonna try it this week when I have some time to spare.
The translation itself should be excellent because it's an iterative project that took several years. From what I read it's very high quality for a free fan project.

Last time I tried PCSX2, the performance was mostly shitty on FM4... I'm not sure if later revisions fixed that though.

I tried Fm 5 on pcsx 2 and i got artefacts and crap in everything except dx 10 software but it looks rugged and some slow-downs in the battle animations but fully playable.

(e8400 @3.55, Gf 275 gtx, Pcsx 2 r3765 )

Aye, software mode was the only way I could get it running too... but, like you said, slow downs Sad Slow downs are acceptable in PC games since they're designed to scale that way - but emulation is horrid if it's not full speed.

To me at least.

True, but in turn based games the slow-downs don't bother me that much.

As i only noticed them in the battle animations in Fm5 .

Luckily for me, SwapMagic + USB HDD + PS2 backups = Awesome on the PS3. I may not have save-states or the luxuriously awesome internal resolution modifier of PCSX2.. but at least it works!

I wish I had that option. Damn sony for never releasing a backwards compatible ps3 in europe.

Eh? All the launch PS3s were backwards compatible, then the 80GB was also backwards compatible ... albeit with shitty software-based emulation. My PS3-60GB is a UK model.

yeah you're right of course.. I screwed up a bit there.
I didn't buy a PS3 right away at launch and when I finally did get to buy one, the backwards compatible ones were already gone again and only available anymore in japan and the US and I was pretty pissed.
the 60 gig one you have is the only one that ever came out in europe with backwards compatbility and it wasn't available for long.
the 80 gig one with it was only released in other regions :-(

Well Sony has patented a piece of hardware that allows PS2 games to be played on non-backwards compatible PS3s. Whether or not they ever release it is another matter. The price is yet another matter.

I have high hopes that PSP2 will play PS2 titles just as PSP1 did with PSX. If it won't then Sony can shove it.

....or you know, we could talk about the game?

I'm stuck on the two bitches. In the mission you're forced to use quad legs so I can't use my awesome skate legs and circle strafe the shit out of everything. If I'm not getting pummelled by the stupid melee bitch, the bazooka bitch is blowing up my shit.

At least in FM4 the bazooka was balanced by not letting it shoot a few tiles near you (or maybe that was just missles?) But even if I'm in her face I just get raped in 2 hits. Had to take a break from it cause it's really pissing me off. Anyone have any tips??

take potshots at the close-combat bitch, hug the half-destroyed house with the repair thingy and watch out for grenades from the other one (if you stay right on top of the repair item and use the walls for cover), that's about it.

and yeah, the equipment requirements for this missions are a damn joke - i was stuck there too for a bit, built an awesome all-out 2legged bazooka/rocket mech, but "computer says noooooo", it has to be quad and ranged (ah, so a bazooka is a melee weapon now? Laughing )

oh and if you're already having troubles with those 2, good luck later on when you have to face ALL FOUR of them at the same time Wink

No way! They removed the distance restriction on the bazooka!? Sad Christ, that was your only defence in the original games! Some bitch slamming your shit about with a bazooka or RL? Skate closer and pummel her with a Pile Bunker or Cleave Axe.

what i wrote about the bazooka=melee was meant as a joke...but yeah, you can simply shoot at point blank range, it's actually what i do most of the time, same with rocket launchers. works brilliantly with the sniper rifle too...either instapwn at range or just use it like a shotgun if somebody tries to melee you. "but what about bossfights and fast moving targets", one might say - well, see, there's this EDGE button, which was originally intended to work for evasive maneuvers, but actually just boils down to extreme slow-mo. which let me end a bossfight against the main meanie at short distance in about 10 seconds. with a goddamn sniper rifle Laughing

aw man >_< Well thanks for the tips at least. Here I thought I was all badass n shit with my dual assault rifles, when I'm better off just going bazooka joe on their shit. Err, I didn't look but was EDGE available in that fight? I know he turned it off for 'lol story' reasons, but I wasn't sure if he kept it off after 'lol more story'.

They really should have balanced those weapons better. Add friendly fire splash damage to the 'zooka so at if you fired it close range you took damage as well. As far as the sniper, it only fires when scoped, but they should have also made it so you're stationary to fire it.

Oh well. Game has gone from a 9/10 down to maybe a 7.5 If they manage to re-balance this shit for multiplayer I'd give it an 8.

sniper rifles DO fire without scope iirc...and EDGE is reactivated soon after that fight. and yeah, averythink with auto fire kinda sucks against everything except fragile, fast moving stuff. i went with dual assault rifles too at first (and dual shotguns, which made me more of a darwin award candidate than the face-melting heavy hitter i thought i'd be), but then i just switched to one heavy-hitting weapon, rockets for extra dmg or missiles for fast shit and a balanced body. cause heavy armor doesn't really do you any good and fast legs are worth jack shit after they've been destroyed.

oh and if i ever find the guy who thought it would be a good idea to map skating to the left analog stick pressed down, i hope i have a magnum ready so i can shoot him in the knee
