They have succeeded at creating some of the worst dialogues I've ever seen in a videogame. The writing is so bad it almost makes my brain hurt.

Good strategy. I played it as a pure H&S with a ridiculously large world to explore and a ton of interaction.

Oh yeah, Gothic 1. I still remember downloading a 112 mb rip from Kazaa (...it was a long time ago Wink ) and instantly loving it. So much in fact that the same day I bought a copy in a local store.

And it's not just the memories. I recently played it again ( with Dark Mysteries ) and had as much fun as I had during my first playthrough.

THAT'S classic for you.

In a year nobody will remember that Arcania existed.

I agree this is between 2 worlds and Risen.

It's not as bad as some guys say, I actually liked it Smile

- I disagree about the voice acting, I liked that too, esp. that witch ( lol ) Oh, and the waterfalls sound played fine here ( deafening )

Combat...well OK..it has some good weapon animations, but nothing special here + some enemies just get stuck and don't move when you hit them (humanoid ones )

Graphics..hmm..not bad, but not spectacular either..

looting = good, but I'd rather see the info in the middle or top of the screen and not on top of the weapon bar. It took me a while to get used to that.

weapons = they look interesting, some good ones in the demo.

enemies = some interesting ones, some boring ones, we'll see

NPCs = a couple of good ones, liked them Smile

Overall : May not be what I expected, but I think I'll finish the game Smile

PS. Finished and loved Risen, but couldn't stand Divinity 2 for more than 30 mins.

This game is Superb based on the demo. Its a Gothic game that plays smoothly when first released. i thought it would play like crap as all Gothic games have, but this was butter smooth and looks fantastic.

The guy quoted from another forum is overreacting by far, but still, he does make some valid points. I was one of the people to heavily criticize Risen for the second part of the game, but still, the atmosphere, combat and interaction in latest Piranha adventure blow this demo to pieces. Several times. At once.

I still may change my mind after the full title hits the shelves (who knows?), but so far, it seems like the game has nothing that actually stands out or builds any identity for it. It's not Gothic, that's for sure, it's bland, generic, empty and uninspired. And most of all, it's simply... boring. You can't really explore, getting blocked by invisible walls almost everywhere and finding nothing of real interest when you aren't. The characters don't seem interesting and even character advancement seems over-simplified and kinda as if they didn't have a good idea for what to put in there.

All in all, it's one of two things. Either a very poorly made demo of a decent-to-good, but rather generic game, or a well made demo of a poorly made tilte, created to milk the franchise before it gets cold.

Oh, and yes. The witch was GROSS.

Looks like they've managed to make this as uninspiring as World of Warcraft. That leaves Two Worlds and New Vegas.

The demo is utter shit, both gameplay and graphics. I won't even bother listing what's wrong, just assume "everything" and you'll be close enough.

I'll wait for the full game before I make a judge.

But it's utterly boring, uninteresting.

Omfg.. Gothic 3 was crap... but Arcania is a fucking joke! Are they serious with this game? I mean... srsly.. I started the demo and right at the beginning I couldn't stop laughing because of the bad voice acting. German and English, both are horrible!
The combat is utter crap too. I mean.. wtf?!
Risen takes a huge dump on this crap. Graphics suck too. Risen was much more beautiful than this piece of shit.

"Oh, he's going up that tower - quickly switch to that epic track. Oh wait, he's going back down, use the previous track again - fade them god damn it, fade them. The concept is so old sound, so simple and yet so effective that sound designers and/or programmers should be fired for not using it in this day and age. "

Laughing a really basic mistake to make, I thought everyone had this down after Lucasarts and Imuse in the 90's (the ME games) or maybe these guys are console players Laughing

Risen more beautiful? Are you serious? LOL.
Anyway, I think they approached the demo in wrong way. It shouldn't be tailored to be specifically a demo, cause it falsifies some elements of the gameplay (easy combat, fast levelling, etc.). Let's wait for full version and treat this demo simply as benchmark. And one last thing: if anyone was expecting a true sequel to Gothic1/2, well, to put it mildly, stop being naive Smile

I agree with him actually. Considering the piss-poor performance in relation to how unattractive it is, Gothic 4 has a big dump taken in it's mouth by Risen.

It's not a bad game if you don't compare to the other Gothic, especially the first two. There is a massive dumbing down regarding the interaction with NPCs, the element I liked most in the series.

I hope the "Gothic" difficulty level is grayed out because it changes the NPCs' reactions to the player.

BTW, is there a way to turn of the zooming out during combat? It's annoying!

Yes lets not compare it to the previous Gothic titles, seeing as theres no "Gothic" in the name "Arcania: Gothic 4 " theres no reason in the world to compare it to the Gothic titles as it's not a followup or anything.
Same way that Fallout 3 should just be judged on it's "own merits" as it's obviously got nothing to do with Fallout or Fallout 2.

That's not what I meant to say. I'm not claiming we shouldn't compare Gothic 4 to the other Gothic games. It's the right of every Gothic fan to complain about this sequel. What I wanted to say is that Gothic 4 wouldn't be a disappointing game if it was called just Arcania.

It still would be for me Sad I don't know, compared to other western RPGs... this just feels shallow and tasteless. There's no soul to it Sad I'll play it when the full version comes out, but you won't catch me putting aside Dragon Knight Saga or Two Worlds II in order to do so :\

This is way better than the POS that was Gothic 3. It's not good but lets not compare it to Gothic 3 Razz

the end is demo exclusive ^^

this is the gamescom demo Rolling Eyes

the begining of the demo is the same begining of the final release. a the dungeon and the end of the demo ist exclusive for the gamescom demo and will been not in the final release.

and i say it again, me not wondering , when the final release ( in 2 weeks is the release ) will been bugy and unoptimized.

I know that the end is demo exclusive. duh. But have you looked at your logs in the last room or not?

For those who understand german. Dont look at the spoiler if you dont want to know the end of the game.

I finally tried this demo. It's not a Gothic game. Even the European colours were to bloomy to my likes. There are several nasty bugs. Couldn't get more than 30fps@1920x1080 with a q9500 and a gtx280, which would be ok if i could see why, which i don't. Opted for lowering the resolution and getting 60fps, since lowering the graphics would only give me 5fps tops.

The collision detection is disastrous. It's weird to see an npc traverse through me, or see it walking on roofs and all over objects in the distance, with laggy animations. The textures are most of the time very low resolution, the shadow movement of the world is horrendous, it would be better if the world shadows didn't moved, than see it jump 10inchs every second. The skill tree seems unappealing. The crafting system was oversimplified. The combat although simple and quite easy in hard, it's somewhat enjoyable, at least works better than previous iterations.

Still it's close to an rpg, and it might grant some enjoyment if we close our eyes to all the problems (or maybe not).

Tried it, where do I start? Problem was, I felt like king of the jungle from the very start. Could crush anything that came my way, and I really mean crush.

Combat felt very gimmicky, I still think g2 had the best combat. There I actually had to flee some foes, like my house was on fire.

Facial animations are atrocious, and overall, Risen had loads better graphics.

No trainers and such. Well, the whole point for me of gothic was that you had to go places to grow your character, sleep, etc. They took all the adventuring out.

It's a hack'n'slash at best, and let me tell you, I have seen slashers with three times the depth this promises.

ok so alot of ppl are complaining that it isnt a true gothic game and comparing as such.. i never really played a gothic game for very long so i guess i look at it unswayed by past gothic games.. while its not a prefect game, i think it has enough merits in its own reguard to be a superb rpg. and playing it on: 1680x1050 everything on high and ultra.. looks fantastic. i like the demo more then i ever liked Risen , but then again Risen was more gothic then this for sure.

Many haters here, and ppl that talk crap as GFX is bad or whole demo is terrible, thay are just HATERS!
Demo was OK, performance is gr8 as graphics, 2x better then Risen and 3x better then Gothic 3
weak points is fighting system which might be better in full game if it progress and get more options and harder enemies, i hope for gr8 story and full and good ending not like rushed risen crap ending...

Ok, I admit I only played it for about 10 minutes......BUT

Looks just as good if not better than Risen, graphically. It DOES feel a bit like Gothic, and I really REALLY hope the Gothic difficulty will result in different game play mechanisms. (really hated the fact that ANYTHING you can interact with has a soft golden glow around it.

The UI is better than ever, IMO.....I killed all the farm animals i could just to test some stuff out....killed all the sheep, some chickens......didn't gain a BIT of XP....didn't see a single plant in the ground to pick....even in the garden in the first village......sigh......

Runs really good!!! I will definitely "purchase" this when it comes out and play through it just to pay homage to the Gothic series....it honestly feels a bit like Gothic, Risen, and Fable had an orgy and this game was the offspring.....not too bad.

Do we have any info on the "Gothic" difficulty on the German boards?
