No, I believe I communicated that it had the potential to be the spiritual heir to master of magic and my personal goty.
But take that how you will, it was made by a studio that is a lot smaller, no backing of a multi billion dollar publisher, and no longer running series dating back to the early nineties, that should raise the expectations a bit higher and the demands of the finished product, in my opinion.
But if we're satisfied with simplified gameplay and pretty graphics, that an indie dev can make, from the biggest pc strategy gaming studio in the world "Firaxis captained by Sid Meier of all people" then sure Civ V might be a fantastic game.

So, basically we got another game that will live up to its potential when fans will get their hands on it and make some mods. Fucking disgrace.

I thought pre-load counts as installed game, and as you can't install demo versions for these, I didn't even check if it was possible to install it

Downloading now, damn I could have been playing demo for some time now Laughing

Nothing's changed then - modded Civ 4 is much better than unmodded one.

Btw. does the game have multi-core and 64-bit support?

is it worth grabbing alien crossfire? I still got SMAC lying around here but never bothered with alien crossfire.
I read that the two alien factions are somewhat overpowered?

Yes they are, but it's a fun expansion nevertheless, I generally play with that as it not only adds those alien races but a ton of other stuff as well.

Thanks for the review Epsilon.

Even though I have not seen the game myself, I'm fairly sure that I do not agree with you on many points, but thats most probably cause we might have different preferences as far as the optimal civ experience goes and different expectations on what the game should or should not deliver.

I'm also sure, that the game will improve a lot as the modding community kicks into high gear. It is the way of CIV, as it was in the past and as it is to be in the future.

Sidenote:
Before someone else dares to compare this to Elemental, let me add this:
Elemental is a fucking disgrace. They released an even just beta quality game that not only lacks real content, proper AI, even the hint of a balance, it keeps fucking crashing on you with OOM errors even on tiny/small worlds, before even mid-game could start.

Comparing the two games is an insult to Civilization in my eyes.

Sure Elemental game has potential, could be GOTY and all that crap, but it does not change the fact, that in its current state, not even the modding community can save that one.

CIV on the other hand should be playable from start to end when you get your hands on it, with a decently balanced gameplay. I might not be perfect, but it will at have a higher than 0 perfection percentage, might even be higher than 50%, where Elemental would probably score somewhere in the negatives.

Elemental is dead to me, until they release an actually release quality version of that game.

Lovin the game here.. the interface, the old feeling of conquering through a variety of means, the overall polish, sound, graphics(obviously).. Haven't played enough to say yay or nay on one of the biggest gripes with civ before, namely AI. But yeah, for myself I say awesome an hour or so in. In this case, I don't believe the streamlining was a bad thing at all, quite to the contrary. They took out the unnecessary(ahem..religion) and left in what makes the game great. And what is missing, can always be added with mods. So I definitely say one of the best latest games in terms of quality on release. Ok, back for more Sid Meier's crack..er civlization ;D

Yes, the interface is very slick. My only concern for now is the variety of resources, which I haven't played enough to see them all. I hope there are more than what was in Civ 4.

As far as I know, resources are a lot more scarce and first come first served, making trade, diplomacy and brute force to get em all the more important, so only once source of Uranium (for example) and you ain't gonna like your neighbour having it, neither is anyone else Wink

I don't mind if they are scarce as long as there is more types of resources than there was in the other game. I definitely don't want everyone having uranium. Or me, really. If I get uranium then I just end up nuking everything and then what is the point? Razz
