Must have Civilization V.. I neeeeeeeed it:-< I'm going batshit crazy.. hahahehehahahehe *is wearing a clown outfit while covered in blood* THIS IS MADNESS!!
And I hope it won't be a nuked release.. that will be the end of me..
Seriously though.. I do hope they manage to crack that dlc with the Babylonian race when it gets released. This was an ugly move from 2k with the day one dlc thingy. Nevertheless if the game runs smooth for me on high settings I'll buy it like I did with all the Civ titles.

Uhhh, it's kinda hard to explain up in the air, but... hexagons immediately adjacent to units are their Zones of Control. Units outside your control/alliance can't move between two ZoC'd hexes, so it's a useful mechanic to block hostile movement without actually having a solid wall of units in the area.
Say you have a 5-hex wide passage between the mountains: you'd need two units to block it off. Neutrals wouldn't be able to pass, and enemies would have to attack and kill one of the units to break the ZoC chain and get through.

Played through the demo twice, first with the Persians and then with Greece and I have to say I love this one more than the previous versions. The combat isn't shit anymore, the graphics are nice on maxed settings plus 4x AA and wouldn't want them to be any better because then the system requirements would be higher. Music is epic, the new leader animations are smooth and AI is just as bad as it is in Civ4 so it's not that horrendous. I just hope the multi player works as well as it does in Civ4.

What's with Eurogamer lately? First the 4/10 for Mafia 2, which i didn't like that much but it still didn't warrant the beating it got on Eurogamer... Now Civ5... WTF?

8/10 isn't bad. Actually it's quite good. What'd you expect? 10/10? No game ever deserves a perfect rating simply because there are no perfect games.

They really prettied up the graphics in this game, made the combat a lot better, and I do mean a hell of a lot better than the previous civs. As ShadowB pointed out, the reintroduction of ZoC is a nice touch and it fits well with the hexagons instead of the square tiles.
The interface has received an overhaul, making it a lot easier to see whats going on and to manage your empire.
Even playing on a "huge" map feels a lot smaller than a similar in Civ IV, sure the added hexagons makes the map feel more 'true to life' and no abrubt beginning and ending of mountain ranges and/or lakes.
Of course you can't just control click and move a whole bunch of units now as they can't be on the same hexagon, so you have to move each unit individually.
The tech tree has been stripped of all the unneeded techs that didn't really add that much to the conquest part of the game, as thats what the game is ultimately about now; combat and conquest.
You can't just lean back and hope for a cultural victory, you really need to wage war on your enemies and exterminate them as best you can, by getting the better techs, controlling the right resources thus enabling you to field the amount of units you need for your warmachine, as theres no infinite resources anymore, you do need to have more of the same type of resource.
The city states are interesting "honey pot" resources that you can earn through diplomacy, and thats practically the only thing diplomacy is good for, earning the good will of the city states thus giving you free food, coal, or military units once in a while. Forget about diplomacy with the other ai's they will just attack you anyway.
It feels like you're playing a turnbased version of Empire Earth, which isn't necessarely bad at all, but the combat and the accessibility ie easy to get into gameplay wasn't, or isn't why I play Civilization, I play it for the strategic depth and the diversity of the tech tree, not to conquer my enemies through brute force, then I might as well play EE or Total Annihilation.
Or better yet, X-Com, oh wait thats a first person shooter now, I suppose I better play Civilization V then, right 2K.

8/10 is average the way scoring works these days.
In a perfect world 8/10 would be a great score.

I personally have nothing against that score, its just the way that review is written. Something like that you expect from some blog or forum review, not from someone being paid to write.

Yeah, nowadays a 8/10 is like: "well the game is objectively quite meh.. but since the publisher paid me well imma go with a 8, which is both a solid score and non-suspicious at the same time."

You are overreacting. I remmember Civ 4 release when AI never attacked eachother and only attacked player when he was close to victory. This time may be the other way around, but thats nothing that can't be fixed with patches and even changing couple of things with notepad.

This.
I remember going back to vanilla civ IV, civ III, hell maybe even civ II and thinking - wow, how did I ever play this pile of shit? I love that they kept, and even expanded upon the modability. Still waiting for mine to update, but I already anticipate that this will be the same. I will play it getting used to the changes, finding what I like and what I don't like, picking apart the game and adding up its strengths and weaknesses. All the while I enjoy it for what it is - a springboard for crafty modders out there to really rev the experience up. In a few months I can only imagine the experience - aided by a combo of patches and mods - becoming a classic game experience like the civs before it.

Well if mods count, then Rise of Mankind > almost everything else recently made.
I only write my opinions based on Civ V's current state.

Epsilon, try Fall from Heaven 2, that's really nice when playing with a friend.
The latest modmods and modmodmods just make it unstable in multiplayer so you gotta stick with the vanilla mod.

On a rare occasion when your civ is on an island with only one peaceful neighbor and you have parity in city numbers peaceful coexisting is possible. You constantly exchange techs and eventually your neighbor civ offers itself to be your vassal
