Just finished the game in about 11 hours. I liked it, but overall it wasn't able to amaze me like the original Mafia did. While the music and graphics/optimisation are objectively good, the gameplay itself felt too console-centric with its cover-based gunplay (*sad panda*), the bloodyscreesoreal and pop-a-mole-y AI. More action during the first 5-6 chapters would have been well accepted, too.
The story was competent, albeit not particularly memorable (especially the rushed final part), with the various characters being rather uninspired and anonymous when compared to Mafia's brilliance. Still, a solid 7/10 for me (while the first Mafia was, and still is, a 9/10).

I wish I knew that there only were 15 chapters but I was kind of ready for it since it reminded me very much of the last mission in Mafia 1...

I've just finished it as well, and by the end I found it quite tedious.
Spoilering this next bit just in case :E
Spoiler: | 75% of your time in the game is spent driving; to make it even more annoying, you keep driving the same goddamn routes over and over.
The voice acting is also tons better than the graphics, the two just don't match. When a voice conveys an emotion, that often looks pretty shitty ingame, and the faces and body language just don't get it across at all. Considering it's not a graphical powerhouse at all, I wish they had spent some more time on this. Valve does it better in HL2 'for chrissakes'.
Story wise it's also not really special. In fact, I kept thinking "had this in Mafia 1/GTA4" a lot - that goes double for the scenery, there are parts of the city where my first reaction was "oh god I've seen this in GTA4". Obviously not surprising, since both take (partial) inspiration from NYC, but perhaps that's one of their mistakes with this game?
That said, the driving feels quite good, it's just that there's way too much of it. Feels more like playing one of the Driver games to be honest
Pro:
- Voice acting and music
- Car handling
- Runs smooth even on a stock dualcore with a 5870 in 2D clocks
Con:
- Generic story, quite similar to it's predecessor and GTA4 unfortunately
- Too much driving
- Distracting, useless open world
- Runs smooth even on a stock dualcore with a 5870 in 2D clocks
Not kidding about the 2D clocks, for the record. 3D is 975/1220 for me, 2D is 635/900 - it didn't go back to 3D after alttabbing, and I didn't notice it at all. High CPU usage, but even on 2D clocks it only got up to 80ish% GPU usage.
|
All in all it's an enjoyable game, but nowhere near as good as the hype around it. That, and my DLC-milking-sense is tingling like crazy. Good thing it's all free :>

I was actually thinking of hooking my old 8800GTS just to run PhysX on it... but I heard that's a waste of time and better just using my 285GTX.

Is there anyway to take a taxi in this game, the driving is soooo boring. Except from the awful driving great story so far.

Is there any way to notch up the difficulty level to Hard mid story? Medium is way too easy.
