Mods used?

Jarhead Sound Mod for the main sounds as it's been getting a lot of good criticism and is updated frequently, VoP with 2.3 or what it was also solves a number of problems the earlier versions had and is also popular but so is Chammy's sound mod and Elias.

Various unit addons as well like the Tier 1 operator replicatas to US Forces 2008 with replacements for original BI units, some of the so called "proper" addons like further scaling of the view distance for smaller things, a huge number of weapon addons that have managed to hold up to the quality of the BI originals (RobertHammer mostly with some P85's and more.) not many vehicle addons at the moment but a few higher quality ones, various tweaks as well like replacable sights on most weapons, texture replacers, Zeus AI (Not very compatible with OA though, a ongoing beta is underway though I don't use it.) and a variety of others.

All in all over 400 PBO's that serve to enhance the game in a variety of ways and add to it and about 50 or so SP missions and campaigns.

EDIT: Ah right yeah there's probably a new serial check from 1.54 if you use BAF and triggers if it's invalid, even if it's just the main game (And expansion OA.) it's proven difficult to crack.

Price is rather fair though, even more so on on certain stores (Sprocket for example.) but it's a niche game and not for everyone, demos do exist of both the main game and OA expansion however they're not the most recent versions available so a bit dated and have some bugs.
(Large and rather complex game but Bohemia do have nice support and active mod community, Project Reality is coming along nicely as of late and the Vietnam mod is very active, Stalker mod Conspiracies also updated a while ago with a new series of missions and data plus of course Ace Team and the SLX addon plus frameworks like CBA and others.)

The modding community for this game is top notch. No doubt about it. There's a lot of talented people working on mods out there. Yet we also have some that goes for quantity instead of quality, but the quality mods are just brilliant. But then there is also the curse of having so many mods.. You always think "I'm so gonna use this one all the time" yet one day you realize you might only have tested the mod once or twice ..
I'm especially looking forward to the release of Invasion 1944 (WW2), The Unsung Mod (Vietnam) and Project Reality.
If the PR team can do as good as they did with BF2, I might just jizz in my pants.

Also you can win a copy of the BAF DLC on Armaholic !

I had a little problem installing BAF with my Win7 X64.
I had to decompress the download file and run the setup file in compatibility mode XP SP3 and "Run as Administrator" both activated. Only after that I could activate and install the addon.
Didn't see anyone complaining with this problem, it must be something on my rig.

I use addons via mods such as @Units (@ is common in ArmA to designate mods)

So it would be ArmA2\@Units\Addons\UnitAddon.pbo file and .bisign file for server usage.

And a shortcut to the exe saying -nosplash (no logo stuff.) -mod=@Units
(Ideally after any other mods depending on load order used ; separates so "ArmA2.exe -nosplash -mod=beta;@Units)

Another way to speed up the startup is by using "-world=empty"
Instead of loading one of the worlds in the game, it will just be water and nothing else around. A bit useless but what the hell.

You will have to create your own mission for the units to be used. The same thing for vehicles etc. The mod will just make them available in the editor. They wont replace the standard troops (USCM / US Army).
Even though it might seem a bit hard to learn how to use the editor, if you havent used it before, there's a lot of excellent tutorials around, and always help on the official forums.

Or use a replacer config type mod if available (Armaholic for example or other sites.).
(Not many of those made though, replaces the default models with modded ones but need to match in terms of gear used and such as to avoid issues in the mission they're used in or the campaign.)

Installer uses a serial, it works as a mod though and as long as 1.54 is installed just having the BAF folder will work, you can just copy it over as well without using the installer as it's there in unpacked form already.

since the serial is only needed for installation, I wonder if its possible to rip the baf folder out and let someone else use it?

That could work as it's just a bunch of PBO's (Some under \Common\Addons and some under BAF\Addons) o unless 1.54 also adds Fade protection when playing the new campaign or separate missions without a valid serial, most likely this isn't the case though but it's just a guess.

I've the feeling that doesn't work that way. I've 2 HD's one with XP and another with Win7. In both I've the ARMA II installed in a common folder. So when there's a patch or want to add a new addon, I just have to do it only once and not in both game installations.
With BAF I had to install it in both systems, otherwise I would have a "decrypt" error when launching the game with the system where I hadn't install BAF.
So there must be some kind of protection, otherwise it would be very easy to copy. And because there's a serial involved there's also the chance for having FADE.

You need the registry info then it would seem (serial key, stored in some strange format.), interesting.

I'm sure there's a limited number of activations. Besides if the nice person decided to play in the same server as the friend, FADE, might be activated.
They protect well their games. And I'll say in this case, I'm glad for it.
They are the only developer at the moment who create milsims.
If we don't support them, will have only CoD, BE, MoH, and other corridor shooters.

Yup , only that the DLC is a bit of a lackluster for me cause im not Britsh, and a couple of weapons / vehicles were already ingame for the marines. A 5 dollar instead of 10 dollar pricetag would be more appropriate since the full game ( OA ) is only 15 pounds, but i realize this was done as a way for the community to "donate" to their favorite game and get a mod of highstandard in return that required not too much time.

The BAF weapons and vehicles were actually added for free in 1.54 but at lower-polygon detail and with placeholder textures at 64x64 instead of 2048x2048 (Mostly to help dedicated servers apparently but also as a preview.) but missions, the campaign and stuff related to it (Voice and music for example.) are DLC only.

Nice bonus and fully working though lower-detail than what's in the full addon.

You got a point.
With this addon and OA, it's almost like they have launched a full price tag game this year.
I too would like to see future DLC's at 5€.

Story is cut too much, keeps skipping forward in time, all the characters are bit shallow, there was a point in game where I kinda lost track of who is who, all the eddies, joes and harries.

I thought the price had lowered a bit, the UK DLC "BAF" is like 10$ or so even on places like Steam.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/33960/

EDIT: ArmA 2 CO (ArmA 2 and OA) is about a bit over 40$ but OA alone is something like a bit over 30$.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/33930/

(And Steam isn't exactly the cheapest alternative so retail or Sprocket might have better pricing.)
