|
 |
I was looking at ebooks for a while and a nice opportunity has opened up. A buddy of mine will give me his Ipod Touch or his Sony Reader Pocket Edition. I was inclined to go for the Sony because I want an e-reader and I don't need a media player (currently owning a Zen). Now though I found out the Ipod can also display ebooks with apps like Stanza. Wee! My quesiton is, how does the Ipod perform as an e-reader? Is Apple as anal as with the Iphone concerning third party apps?

There are some dirtcheap netbooks out there ... like Acer Aspire. Can't tell about iPod, sorry.
eBook readers are too overpriced (here, at least)

I know that the main advantage of ebook readers like Kindle, over iPad is mainly battery life (kindle has battery life of 1 week if I'm not mistaken, and iPad several hours).
Maybe you could try stripping down any OS that iPad has and installing sth simpler like stripped down XP (your not gonna use half of stuff anyways), and I think there is software like Calibre, ComicRack and Zinio that you can use for reading ebooks.
Still you'd have to see how the battery life is...
I would like to get Kindle DX, but the price is way too high for me

alsothe display isn't so hard on the eyes. Don't know if it is the backlighting or contrast, but reading on a normal display could give you a nasty headache.

Battery life is no problem. E-readers are overpriced here too. That Sony thingie, which is tiny and basically has the bare essentials, costs €160 or so.
Can I simply change the OS on the Ipod? My main question is whether the Ipod performs well as an e-reader. Reading comfort, page turning speed, font size etc. If it is good enough as an e-reader, the additional options like playing media would be a plus.

If you are really serious about reading on the device, then no doubt, an e-reader is heaps above any LCD display. eInk is just so much more easier to read than LCD.

LCD screens are battery killers on mobile devices, don't expect an iPod touch to perform more then 5 hours as a pdf reader. Apple claims 30 hours of runtime which is only true for music playback with the screen turned off.

Isn't an iPod terribly small to use as a reading device? Or are you people talking about the iPAD?

The Sony reader I mentioned has also a small screen. It'll be frustrating, but I'll get it for free. So whbo cares?

I'd worry more about the eye strain which in the long run causes head aches, worsening vision etc.

I thought e-readers supported font size changes. Is that not so?

Take the iPod Touch and sell it then buy the new 6" WiFi Kindle @ ~$140. That thing is nice and last almost a month. The text is much crisper than an iPad and won't strain your eyes as much or wrist. iPad is 1.6 lb vs the new Kindle .55 lb.
If you hate it, ignore it.
